Small Details Matter

It is interesting to me how small details can make a difference in any type of sports performance.  I think that can be viewed as a positive for golfers - because seemingly little things that you might not be aware of can influence your golf score in a big way.

I recently saw that Greg Maddux - who I followed when he pitched for the Cubs and Braves - has been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  This article illustrates some of the perhaps "little" things that he focused on that helped him to be successful, I hope you enjoy it:

By the way, I understand that he is also a scratch golfer.  Why does that not surprise me!

Daniel Coyle is the author of the book "The Talent Code," which I believe is the bible for understanding the truth about how people develop talents.  He decided that he wanted to learn the "Tiger Woods Golf Ball Juggling" skill that we have seen from time to time on TV.  Here are two fun videos that show his initial and final efforts to learn this skill - enjoy!

7 Clubfitting Keys
To Improve Shot Consistency

When was the last time you saw a Golf Magazine that had a cover headline with the title something like "7 New Drivers That Will Improve Your Driving Consistency?"  Nope - not likely to happen!

Any time we purchase new golf clubs most of us are looking for more distance.  But more distance alone is not likely to help us shoot lower scores.

If you are a long-time reader of this newsletter, you know I am convinced that Tom Wishon (Tom Wishon Golf) is a world leader in helping golfers play their best golf through Custom Club Fitting.

He recently wrote an article on his view of 7 Clubfitting Keys to help golfers improve their shot consistency.  It would be hard to improve on the content in this article, and I hope you enjoy reading it:

More Distance AND Greater Consistency is Achieveable!

Putter Face Rotation and Putter Design

Assume that you aim your putter perfectly at your target at address.  Your putting stroke will have a stroke path and some degree of face rotation relative to that path.  Your desire, then, is to create a stroke path and face rotation that will allow the putter face to be aimed at your target at impact - consistently.

Every putter has some lie angle to it - the maximum lie angle a putter can have is 80 degrees.  As a result, every "natural" putting stroke has some amount of arc to it.  How much Face Rotation you have related to the arc of your stroke is important to consistently hit putts at your target.  Your putter face can either be square, open, or closed relative to your putting path.

The Science and Motion Sports (SAM) PuttLab site recently released the 5th in their "Fundamentals of Putting" training series, here is the link to this information:

SAM PuttLab "Fundamentals of Putting" - Putter Face Rotation

The key concept in this article is that of "natural absolute face rotation."  If you are able to create a natural arc stroke, and do not manipulate the putter face with your arms and hands, then you can naturally keep the putter face square to the arc throughout the stroke.

There are two major elements of putter fitting that can affect the amount of face rotation in a putting stroke.  One is Putter Length.  If you use a putter that is too long for you, you are likely to be creating more face rotation than you need.  The second is Putter Design.  Henry Statina, an Edel putter fitter, recently wrote a series of articles on putter fitting - one of them on matching your putter to your path:

Henry Stetina - Pick a Putter That Matches Your Path

Henry notes that putters with a lot of Toe Hang tend to be better for golfers with more arcing strokes, and Face Balanced putters tend to be better for golfers with a small amount of arc in their strokes.

One final thing - a Straight Back, Straight Through Stroke?  Well at one time this was the rage.  But now most knowledgeable putting experts agree that if you are creating this type of stroke you are manipulating the putter face - and so will likely create a less consistent stroke.

The 2014 PGA Equipment Show!

In just a few days, I will be off to the PGA Equipment Show in Orlando, FL.  This year I will participate in the ACCRA Demo Day, meet with vendors, and hopefully learn a lot about new golf game improvement products.  I plan to share what I learned with you in next month's newsletter (and I am looking forward to the warmer weather!).

My new eBook - "It's Time YOU Improved Your Putting!" - is in the hands of my editor.  It should be finished and available from my web site to download - for free - before my February newsletter is published.  I am very excited about this eBook - you will be the FIRST to know when it is available!

I recently expanded the lines of putters I offer to include Machine Putters and SeeMore Putters.  Once I get back from the PGA Show, I will have Putter Fitting Systems available for both of these great putters.  If you want a free demo, please contact me.
