Another Great AGCP Roundtable!

The 8th Annual AGCP Roundtable was held in Columbus, GA on October 17-19, 2013.  More than 40 of the world's best custom club fitters attended this year's Roundtable.

There were two presentations at this year's Roundtable that truly resonated with me in terms of helping golfers play better golf:
  • Dana Upshaw (U.S. Top 100 Clubfitter and "The Golf Club Whisperer") talked about "Hints to Help Your Clients Improve Driver Launch."  He emphasized forward ball position, feeling at impact like you are hitting the ball with a low trajectory, and impact on the upper portion of the face of the driver.  He had a few of the attendees hit some drives, and each of them after a few drives created some increase in driving distance.  Here are links to two of my past newsletters that discussed the tasks to accomplish to get more distance:

  • Bill Kelly talked about "Golf Club Optimization Using Counterweighting."  It was clear after hearing his talk that counterweighting has the potential to improve golf performance for many golfers - I am committed to doing more to help golfers in this area of fitting.

As usual after one of these - already looking forward to learning more at the 2014 AGCP Roundtable!

I have written in at least one past newsletter about Carey Mumford - a Golf Improvement Mental Guru and a good friend.  Well, in October he passed away and will be missed.  His web site - Clear Key Golf - has much useful information to help golfers improve their mental approach to golf.  I wrote a blog post about a month ago about him that you might be interested in reading - Carey Mumford Blog Post.  He REALLY cared about helping golfers play their best!

The TRUTH About Adjusting Iron Lie Angles

Many of you have been to golf club Demo Days, and being tested and fit for irons by hitting on a lie board and determining the "right" lie angle for your clubs from this testing.

Sometimes this is an appropriate way to determine the best lie angle for your irons. But NOT always!  Recently we had a great discussion on the AGCP club fitting forum about this topic, and some of the best club fitters in the world taught all of us what IS the appropriate way to test and modify lie angles.

A good example is a recent lie angle testing session I did with a great ball striker.  He hit very consistent iron shots with a very small draw, the majority of his shots ended at his chosen target.  If anything, his misses were a bit left of his target.  However, all of his irons - when tested with a lie board - had slightly flat lie angles.

What if I - based on the lie board testing - bent his irons more upright?  Well, this would have changed his shot path from one with a slight draw that started a little right and ended at the target, to one that started at the target and ended a little left.  In this case, his lie angles were correct for his ball flight and preferred shot pattern.

Adjusting iron lie angles should always be done relative to the golfer's ball flight, and to his preferred shot pattern.  Simply looking at lie board results and bending clubs based on these is Not the optimum thing to do to help golfers.

I loved the statement that Roy Nix, AGCP Founder and AGCP Master Fitter said during our forum post on this topic - "Look at results, not process."  Well said!

Two Great Short Game Improvement Links

About 2 years ago, there was a great series of instructional videos on the Golf Channel called "12 Nights at the Academy."  One of these 30 minute shows was done with Gary Player; he discussed his process for hitting bunker shots.  The video link below includes information on hitting all types of bunker shots.....

A few days ago, Richie Hunt on his "3Jack Golf Blog" site provided a video on what is necessary to hit that low-trajectory high-spinning wedge shot that we see the PGA pros hit on TV.  Here is the link to this amazing instructional video, created by Joe Mayo, the "Trackman Maestro:"

High Spinning, Low Pitch Shot with Trackman Maestro

This is a must-watch video if you want to know what it takes to hit this shot.  One of the interesting pieces of information from this video is that hitting down on your wedge shots is NOT the way to create a high-spinning low pitch shot. Enjoy!

Testimonial - Shorter CAN Be Longer!

Last month I worked with a female golfer and good friend who was hoping to get some more yards with her drives.  She was playing a 43-1/2 inch long driver.  We fit her with a 41-1/2 inch length driver, 15 degrees of loft, ultra-light (22 grams) grip, and added club head weight.  Here is the feedback she provided on her new driver...

"Tony, the new driver does everything I had hoped.  Seriously, on # 6 my drive was the best ever, approximately 25 yd difference.  Thanks so much. It's interesting and fun to play new distances off the tee."

2 inches shorter - 25 more yards - does custom fitting work?

Miura Golf recently came out with a new iron design - the MB-001 a Muscleback Blade head.  I will have it in my iron fitting system in about a week.  Here is a link if you wish to see what this beautiful new Miura blade design looks like - Miura Golf MB-001 Iron.

I have just started writing a new eBook - "10 Putting Improvement Tasks That WORK!"  This eBook will provide some simple things golfers can accomplish that can help them improve their putting.  I anticipate it will be available sometime in December - FREE for those of you who subscribe to my monthly newsletter and/or weekly blog post!
----------
A few years ago many of you may have seen the golf movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance."  Well, I recently listened to the audio version of the book that the movie is based on.  This book is inspirational and entertaining - even better than the movie.  A must read for golfers!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
