"Practice to Learn / Play to Win" - Strategies for Great Practice!
At the 2013 PGA Show, I completed the SAM PuttLab Level 1 Putting Instructor Certification class. The Level 2 Certification class is focused on Putting Improvement Training. I asked the SAM developer and course instructor, Christian Marquardt, if he would send me a copy of the training materials (why not ask!). What he did do is suggest that I read the book "Practice to Learn / Play to Win," by Mark Guadagnoli, Ph.D. Christian said the principles in this book are similar to those he will teach in the Level 2 class.
If you are a golfer who desires to improve your game through effective practice, you will do well to read this book and adopt some of the suggestions in it. Mark has worked with and helped Ryan Moore, a PGA Tour pro, throughout Ryan's career. Here are some snippets of information from the book that you might find interesting:
- Most golfers set up their practice so that they will be successful on the range, rather than developing a practice strategy for success on the golf course;
- He notes that it is the brain that learns and not the muscles (as I do, he does not believe in muscle memory);
- Both rote repetition learning and practice and what he calls "elaborative learning and practice" have a role in creating a practice approach that produces results on the golf course;
- I loved one phrase that he used - "Emotions Create Memories." Having consequences to your practice, putting yourself in difficult situations in your practice, play a role in making your practice effective.
If you are someone who loves to practice and wants to find ways to make your practice more effective, this is a book to put in your golf library.
I can't wait to take the Level 2 SAM PuttLab training!

Shafts and Grips You May Not Know About
Here is a little "behind the scenes" insight on some of the best golf shafts and golf grips that you may not have heard about. Aerotech Golf Shafts. Aerotech golf shafts are a steel - graphite fiber composite shaft. They have been around for a number of years, but slowly but surely they are gaining popularity on the PGA tour and with us mortal golfers. They are available in 70 gram to 125 gram shaft weights. Matt Kuchar actually first started using the i80 shafts, and now uses the i95 shafts. Other well known Tour players using them are Brant Snedeker and John Cook - all winners this year. In my fitting work, in the last year everyone who has hit them has loved them. Here is a link to the Aerotech web site: Aerotech Golf Shaft Web SiteWinn Dri-Tac Golf Grips. At the AGCP Roundtable last fall, almost everyone I asked said that these grips are their best selling grips. They have a great soft feel and perform well under all weather conditions. Since last October, they have also been my best-selling grip. Here is more information about Dri-Tac grips: Winn Dri-Tac Golf GripsPure Grips. Pure Grips are made in the USA. They have a unique niche in that they are designed to be installed using an air compressor - very easy to install and remove. They are durable and also perform well under all weather conditions, are available in a variety of sizes, and have a 12-month guarantee. They are an up-and-comer, here is a link to the Pure Grip web site: Pure Grips
