UMAP Clients Celebrate End of Sessions with Themed Reception
University of Michigan Aphasia Program Concludes Session A

Clients of the University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) who participated in Session A of the program wrapped up their sessions with a Mexican-themed party. Latin music played in the background as clients  danced, learned new instruments, and shared their stories.

Each client received an honorable mention at the celebration. "It was so amazing to be able to watch Mary grow and succeed with her therapy," says Clinical Fellow Marissa White about the progress of her recent UMAP client.

We are very proud of our clients! To see more photos from the event, you can read the related news article on our website.

The recent annual IHA reception was a fun way to celebrate each other this winter season. We spent time gathered around good food with great company and gave "congratulations to each of the people who went above and beyond," in the words of IHA Director Dr. Cheryl King.

Each of the following individuals received a 2013 IHA Staff Award in recognition of their contributions:
  • Solomon Shurge, for his positive attitude, professionalism, initiative, and overall outstanding performance as a work-study student;
  • Dinah Young, for her exceptional compassion, helpfulness to others, and willingness to meet client needs;
  • Brenda Foster, for her outstanding leadership of our website initiative and her superb coordination of logistics related to facility relocation;
  • Lily Gershenson, MSW, for her leadership contributions to National Depression Screening Day, research on older adult depression screening, and the Caregivers group;
  • Susan E. Watts, ACSW, LMSW, for her leadership and initiative in her role as director of social work training.

Aphasia Program Leads to Great Success
Ted Budd's Inspiring Progress
Ted Budd, UMAP client successTed Budd experienced a stroke while working on a job site on September 19, 2012, causing him to lose part of his ability to speak. His wife then enrolled him in the University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP). Ted has been working with our clinicians for several weeks. He just completed his program and participated in their end-of-session celebration. We are happy to say that, since starting at UMAP, Ted has flourished in many ways.

"It helped me dramatically, and it is going to help me more," says Ted regarding UMAP. He said that it helped him "build confidence" and that the program has helped him realize and achieve a new, more outgoing lifestyle.

Ted plans to return to work and is happy to be back home. His success is a tribute to the achievements of our clients in the U-M Aphasia Program. We wish him and all of our clients the best as they move forward in their lives, taking their new skill sets with them.

You can read more about Ted's story on our website.
