January 2013 Issue No. 11
At the Institute for Human Adjustment (IHA), the new year has brought with it a batch of new trainees as well as one other big change: we have moved! This issue features the new location of the U-M Psychological Clinic, University Center for the Child and the Family, and the IHA central office, as well as some of the past and upcoming events hosted by IHA.

We are pleased to announce a new group starting this month and to recap some of our past events in case you missed them.  In addition, we will introduce several upcoming events and give you a preview of our ADHD and Learning Disabilities Workshop series.

Upcoming Events at IHA
Free workshops and groups
It is our mission to serve university and broader community members with high quality clinical services and educational opportunities in order to assist in difficulties in adjustment, learning, and communication. In accordance with our mission, we are hosting several free workshops for parents and adults caring for children with learning disabilities, behavioral issues, or while going through separation or divorce.

All workshops will take place at UCCF's new location: 500 E. Washington St., Suite 100, Ann Arbor, MI, 48104. Registration is required, and we invite you to register online by following the links below.
If you have any questions regarding our upcoming workshops and groups, please contact us online or by calling (734) 764-9466.

Understanding Your Child's Temperament: "Finding the Fit"
Children are born with their own unique temperaments, or consistent styles of reaction, which are "hard-wired" and endure over time. This workshop will help parents identify nine characteristics of temperament and offer suggestions to help parents enhance the fit between themselves and their child. As with all of our workshops, there will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion.

This workshop will take place on February 27, 2013 from 7:00-8:15 p.m.

Parenting through Separation & Divorce
We understand that all parents are concerned about the well-being of their children as they face the challenges of separation and divorce. We are hosting these upcoming workshops to help parents understand their children's needs during this time, and to offer specific suggestions for creating beneficial post-divorce parenting relationships.

These workshops will be held from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on the first Monday of the month, starting February 4, 2013. The workshops continue through March 4, April 1, May 6, and June 3, 2013

ADHD & Learning Disabilities
Our group offers parents the chance to share ideas and resources on topics such as their child's Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or learning disability (LD) diagnosis, the emotional impact of learning problems, and community supports for parents and children. Parents will receive tools, practical information, and engage in discussions on such topics. Find out more about our free ADHD & LD workshop by clicking below or visiting our YouTube channel for a short informational video.

Because this event is a series of workshops,
we strongly recommend that parents attend on all three nights. The ADHD & LD workshop will take place from 7:00-8:15 p.m. on April 15
April 23, and May 1, 2013.

In Case You Missed Them...
Recap of previous events
This past fall, IHA hosted several free community events on topics often dealing with difficult parenting situations or issues leading to adjustment difficulties at home. In case you missed them, here is a quick recap of some of our previous events:
Social Interactions for ASD by Judy Nantau
Social Interactions for ASD by Judy Nantau

In November 2012, Judy L. Nantau, MA, CCC-SLP, presented a free lecture on social interactions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which was held in the Ann Arbor downtown library. About 40 individuals from the community attended the event. Ms. Nantau described the new method of ASD diagnosis and tips for social communication with children on the spectrum. You can view the resources and information from Ms. Nantau's lecture by watching the free online video of the presentation in our
media library or YouTube channel.

Fiona Miller, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist at UCCF

Dr. Fiona Miller, licensed clinical psychologist, also provided community members with information on adjusting to their child's ASD diagnosis. Her lecture focused on describing the range of challenges and changes that parents report as well as strategies for coping with them. Check back to our media library for a free informational video from the event.
