January eZine 2016

Greetings,
Here's a fun way to look back at technology in the year 2015 with John Klossner Cartoons. You've probably seen his illustrations and cartoons in prominent publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. These John Klossner cartoons appeared in ComputerWorld and come to you via @CIO, 2015: The tech year in cartoons.

Here's wishing you a fabulous 2016. We hope you make room for PCATT training in the new year.

PCATT Takes the Lead with Hawaii IT Apprenticeship Program

What do you think of the idea of an IT Apprenticeship Program? And what would you say if we developed a program for Hawaii? At PCATT, we think it's a great idea and that's what's happening. You can read about it in the PCATT Hawaii Tech Blog in an article written by Steve Auerbach, PCATT Director.

Network Security: Focusing on Identity as the New Perimeter Defense

In today's world with cloud storage, identity (or passwords) is becoming an increasingly important factor in network security, the new security perimeter. For tips on how to improve your authentication practices, you'll be interested in reading more
Job Matches for Veterans

At PCATT, we love our veterans and we're grateful for their service. Veterans make excellent employees and leaders when they transition to civilian life. Adam Stone, writing for Military Times, has selected three "hot" job areas that he thinks are especially suited for veterans. You can read about them in this article.

"Gartner's Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2016"

I just couldn't say it any better so here is a direct and fascinating quote from Forbes about what we can expect from technology this year:

"David W. Cearley, Vice President and Gartner Fellow, said the shift to digital business is the fundamental theme behind next year's top technology trends. During a recent Gartner webinar, he identified three overarching topics within the top 10 trends supporting this move: the physical and virtual worlds merge, intelligence everywhere, and all applications become cloud-centric."

Cyber Security Job Trends

You know cyber security is a hot job area and this survey from Cybrary of 435 senior-level technology and security professionals confirms this. The most in-demand certifications?
  • Security+
  • Ethical Hacking
  • Network+
  • CISSP
  • A+
You can attend most of these certification prep courses at PCATT.

Funding Assistance for Training

If you work for a private company that contributes to the State of Hawaii's unemployment compensation fund, you may be eligible for tuition assistance for training that helps you perform better at work. This tuition assistance comes from the Employment Training Fund which will pay for up to 50% of the first $500 of the cost of eligible training. Most of the PCATT courses qualify for this funding so we encourage you to take advantage of this benefit.

Resolution for the New Year

Make a resolution to learn something new this year. You know it's important, especially in technology. We have a number of courses with a few seats left. Click on the links below to learn more and register.
More courses will be added to our schedule of courses within the next couple of weeks so we invite you to check the PCATT website for updates.

And Finally...

Regular readers know we end with something a little bit different. This time, we have a serious aspect about learning and a funny side about helping our parents learn a computer skill. If you're a serious person, you'll enjoy the FastCompany item about "mindsets", your attitude toward learning. If you're feeling a need for humor, then watch the clip from Comedy Central, Inside AmySchumer-Mom Computer Therapy.
