Greetings,

Each time I visit Oceanit, I'm impressed with what a Hawaii-based company can accomplish with strong leadership, a good team of employees, and their focus on Design Thinking.
It's echoed by John Maeda, a highly respected thought leader in design and technology at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & ByersHe says, "Moore's Law has changed the world through the work of generations of Silicon Valley engineers. Now, it has brought us to this unique moment in time - in which breakthrough design, partnering with breakthrough technology, has become the key to success." Read more of "Why Design Matters More than Moore".  It's a great time to be in the tech.

"50% of small businesses have been the target of a cyber attack" by Patricia L. Harman

Information hacked by cyber criminals can have a lucrative value on the black market. At a recent presentation, Tim Francis, enterprise leader for cyber insurance for Travelers, stated that one in two companies has reported being a cyber attack target. Over 60% of attacks last year struck small to medium-sized businesses, and there are 34,529 known computer incidents each day! Francis states, "It's important for businesses to create clear action plans to help manage the data breach." We've said this before, it's not if, but when a data breach will happen. Read more.

"Six ways to improve endpoint device security" by Eric Cole

Endpoint devices are often the main cause of data breaches. Expert Eric Cole explains ways to improve endpoint protection. He provides basic security practices such as:
  • Run application whitelisting
  • Filter out dangerous executables
  • Run dangerous applications in virtual machine
  • Utilize thin clients
  • More
These practices are taught in basic security courses and reinforce practices you should be aware of from a network security standpoint. This article requires a login

Boards and CyberSecurity

In this CIO article Clint Boulton asks the question, "Boards are getting more involved in cybersecurity, but is it enough?" Research by PwC shows 45% of boards are involved in their company's cybersecurity strategy. This is up from 42% in 2014. With recent attacks on high profile targets such as Sony, Ashley Madison, and the IRS, it isn't surprising boards are more hands-on in cybersecurity strategy. What is surprising is the number is less than half, and only a 3% change year over year.

Do you need to sharpen your cybersecurity skills? Register for a security course at PCATT. CCNA Security begins January 13. Or better yet, send your boss to the next Security+ course at PCATT.

Fight to Communicate: Operating a Communications-Degraded Environment

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at the AFCEA TechNet Asia-Pacific Conference. It was fun to have the younger generation of students who participated in our GenCyber Camp also stop by to say hello. TechNet Asia-Pacific provides the opportunity to keep up with technology and earn instructional hours by attending the AFCEA Leadership Forum. Save the dates for next year, November 15 - 17, 2016.

PyNow Hawaii

When planning a first time event, we hope it will be great but we don't really know until it happens. Thanks to a partnership with PyHawaii and Booz Allen Hamilton, our first ever PyNow conference and competition was super, if we believe the evaluations and comments we received. Thank you to all the presenters for sharing your knowledge and congratulations to the winners and all who participated and supported PyHawaii. Want more? Training is available at PCATT.

International Student Exchange

PCATT welcomed Aso College students from Fukuoka, Japan, for the fifth consecutive year. It's heartwarming to hear them say the experience was life-changing. We wonder if we can teach tech to people from Japan, a country so technologically advanced, and the answer is, "Yes, we can." If you have a need to bring people from a foreign country for short-term technical training, PCATT can help.

To Become an Effective Learner, "Embrace discomfort"

Nate Kornell, Associate Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Williams College, says about learning: "If you are having too easy a time, you're doing it wrong." As much as we want to learn, it can be a challenge. At PCATT, we like to enhance our teaching with hands-on activities to reinforce theories. We have a number of courses coming up in the near future. We hope you embrace the challenge of learning.

And Finally...

You know we end with something tech related but a bit different. "Andy Cavatorta is a sculptor working with sound and robotics. His work integrates emerging technologies with traditional crafts to discover new ways to create meaning with sound." That description hardly begins to describe his intent and body of work. You can see and hear his Gravity Harps or hear him speak about the Chalice Symphony, the Dervishes, or the Raindrop Drum Machine. Save this for when you have time to explore his body of work
