July eZine 2015

Greetings,

For those of us in technology, it's important to keep our skills fresh. If you're unsure about which direction to take, here are questions to ask yourself from Rikki Endsley, community manager for Opensource.com, in her article Keeping skills fresh in tech pays off.
  1. What interests me?
  2. Who's hiring?
  3. What skills are in demand?
She makes a big push for Linux skills. When you decide on your area of interest, I invite you to look at our PCATT offerings or contact me for your training needs.

All the best,

"Academic Diligence Task" - Dealing with Digital Distractions

Researchers recently developed a computer-based test offering students two choices:
  1. Work on math problems
  2. Watch videos or play a video
These choices represent digital distractions students face in their lives and how they are often expected to learn as represented by the math problems. If you want to compare your prediction of outcomes to the results of the study, you may read about the study in greater detail. The implications for participants "beyond things like cognitive ability, socioeconomic status" are the reasons this study is significant with the most important predictive factor being self-control.
Coders Passionate About Programming Languages

Yes, coders are passionate about their preferred programming language. Matt Weinberger, tech reporter for Business Insider, offers reasons why coders prefer a language such as support from the developer community, job prospects, and high salaries. He says Python vs Java is a popular ongoing argument. At PCATT, you can learn both Python and Java along with Ruby, JavaScript, and more. If you must look, here's the August 2015 TIOBE Index.

  2. Explain data visualizations
  3. Educate them
  4. Start small
  5. Have governance in place
  6. Ensure responsibilities are balanced
  7. Provide educational support
Watch for training coming from PCATT so that we can support you.
Security Survey At Black Hat 2015
Image : Bromium

Bromium, Inc. surveyed 101 IT security professionals at Black Hat 2015 to learn about their top concerns. The most common concern cited by 55% of respondents is the endpoint as the greatest security risk. Insider threats (27%) was viewed as the second concern. When asked, 90% of security professionals expect their organization would be more secure with Flash disabled but there is the usual concern with productivity vs security. You can read a quick summary or download the full report "Black Hat 2015: State of Security".
RIG 3.0

Malware in advertising is not new but RIG 3.0 (the latest version of RIG) is "improved" to the point where antivirus software has difficulty detecting it. You won't need to click on the malicious ad for the trojan to download so you may not know your computer is infected until it's too late. Follow basic security precautions:
  • Update your software, browser, and plugins
  • Enable click-to-play in your browser
  • Install anti-malware security
"That 'Useless' Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech's Hottest Ticket"

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) degrees have great value, and you can add Liberal Arts into the mix. "Throughout the major U.S. tech hubs, whether Silicon Valley or Seattle, Boston or Austin, Texas, software companies are discovering that liberal arts thinking makes them stronger." Reasons? People with Liberal Arts majors have a different set of skills and add new perspectives. A surprising comment from this article by George Andersis that people without a tech degree may already be benefiting most from the tech boom. Add a bit of PCATT training and that's a powerful combination.
What's New

PCATT has a number of new course offerings that we think you'll like, such as Intro to Gaming, Public Relations in a Digital World, Writing 4 the Web. We're still working on updating our schedule. Hope to see you at PCATT for training.
And Finally...

Regular readers know we end with something different. Today, it's a science quiz: How well do you know Einstein? Was he bad at math as a student? Did he invent a refrigerator with no moving parts? What did he consider his biggest blunder? Take the quiz from Scientific American. Hope you're a "Zounds!" and not an "Ouch!"
