Rhodopsin in the Eye, image from TNW

Greetings,

Have you heard of high-energy visible light (HEV)? HEV is the light all our electronic devices give off and it's bad for your eyes. Besides impacting our behavioral and biological processes, it can cause damage to sensitive cell tissue in our eyes. If you sit in front of a screen for most of your workday and continue the same at home, there are good tips at the bottom of this article to protect your vision. One day there will be technology to replace or repair our eyes but for now, let's take care of them.

All the best to you,

Beryl Morimoto

Salary Survey 2014

Image from ComputerWorld
ComputerWorld has published their Salary Survey 2014 which contains more than just your ability to do a salary comparison with others in IT. You'll see salary trends (pay increases are inching up), job trends (IT hiring is up), and hot skills (application development is the most sought-after skill). And what do workers want besides the obvious--base pay, job stability, and benefits? Response given most frequently is "challenge of job/responsibility". If you have a career in IT or you're considering this field, you'll be interested to know 84% of those surveyed said they were very satisfied or satisfied with their career choice.

Ubuntu Trusty Tahr Released

Mario Mediati is the Technical Operations Manager at PCATT and is a certified instructor for VMware, Cisco, and Red Hat. His knowledge of networking, Linux, computer hardware, VMware, and just being a smart guy make him a valuable asset to PCATT. He manages the virtual environment utilized for training as well as production. When there is a technical problem to solve or solution that is needed, Mario is often involved either directly or in guiding, consulting or mentoring others. We sometimes fondly call him "Super Mario" because he really is super.

With the release of Ubuntu Trusty Tahr v14.04, Mario experimented by installing it as a virtual machine on his desktop and laptop. He shares the installation steps with you and welcomes your comments and input. We're always experimenting at PCATT, trying out new things so we can expand our experiences and share this knowledge with you.

SDN Is Changing Networking and IT Careers

networkworld_logo
It may surprise you to know that Cisco announced new certifications for its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) programmable networking initiative in response to SDN. Besides learning how to plan, manage, and implement SDN in an enterprise, there are many questions about who will do what. "Educate your IT staff on SDN," says Bill Hanna, vice president of technical services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "You still need really smart people that are open to change." And that's the bottom line - SDN will bring about big changes.

Good Beginnings

Jerry Cerny is the Programs and Training Manager at PCATT. He's one of the smartest, nicest, and most respected person you will meet. PCATT instructors with solid technical credentials have worked with Jerry for tips on improving their teaching. It's that powerful combination of being a subject matter expert and knowing how to deliver training that keeps people coming to PCATT when they want to learn the latest technology. Jerry shares one of the most important aspects of training, "Good Beginnings".
And Finally...

Yes, it's time for that off-beat item we share at the end of every PCATT eZine. You won't need to love Bach's hymn, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, to appreciate what a Japanese film crew did to produce a commercial for a smart phone. Enjoy!

Learning New Tunes

At PCATT, we love to learn new things. We hope you share our love for learning. Here are the PCATT courses for the month of May. There are just a few things to note:

The start date has changed to May 13. You no longer need to take CCNA 1 before CCNA 2 if you have applicable experience.

This new course starting May 29 is taught by Dallas Shiroma, an excellent instructor. Seating is limited because of the hands-on labs so register early.

American Advertising Federation PELE Awards

Linda, our talented PCATT graphics student assistant, won a prestigious award, the Student PELE Gold. The assignment was to design a coffee table book. Photos here leave no doubt about her creativity. Congratulations to Linda and to all the award winners, especially the students from Honolulu Community College in Communication Arts.
