Greetings,

Yesterday, we met with education partners and had a lively discussion about how to prepare teachers and students for the dynamically changing digital future. Some of what we talked about matches what Mark V. Hurd, President at Oracle, describes in The CEOs Perfect Storm: Demographics, Data, and Devices Change Everything. This is top of mind for us at PCATT. We expect you're thinking like this too.

All the best to you,

Beryl Morimoto

Program Manager

Skills That Commanded 6-Figure Jobs in 2013

The skill area with the highest salaries in 2013 was data science. According to Dice.com, people with "R" skills averaged $115,531 annual salary followed by NoSQL database development skills at $114,796.  Other top areas are mobile development using Objective C, user experience and design using OmniGraffle, project management, development operations, and cloud computing. Oh my, here's more info. As a result, it's expected that tech workers will seek higher salaries.

Technology for Business

Burt Lum, Hawaii Open Data Executive Director
With DRFortress and PACXA, PCATT is co-hosting a panel of tech experts on March 14. We hope you will join us for the Pacific Business News Technology for Business event. Daniel Leuck, Ikayzo CEO, Cyrus Driver, Oceanic Time Warner Cable Business Class VP, Burt Lum, Hawaii Open Data Executive Director, and Jason Ho'opai, CEO of ShopSuey will speak on topics of importance to IT administrators and business owners. You may register online or contact Rosanna Costales for more info.
New From Cisco - Self-Enroll Courses & DoD 857.01M Approval

Cisco has a new program designed to help current Academy participants expand their understanding of the latest technologies. Currently, two courses are available, Entrepreneurship and Introduction to Cybersecurity with more to come. This online training is like a personal learning program where you proceed at your own pace. Think of this as a bonus; you receive free courses while you train for your CCNA, CCNP, or CCNA Security certifications.

Also of note is the approval of CCNA Security as a Department of Defense 8570.01-M certification effective January 14, 2014. Watch for this course in an upcoming PCATT schedule.

Open Courseware Sites

If you've wanted to attend Harvard, MIT, Yale, or Carnegie Mellon, you can do so through their open courseware. You know we're big on learning at PCATT. We love sharing these resources with you.
Skills Employers Require

Now that we've tempted you with feeling smart by taking courseware from elite universities, we share survey results from Gallup that indicate only 9% of business leaders say an applicant's university is "very important" while knowledge in the field and applied skills carry considerably more weight (84% and 79% respectively). Thomas Friedman's recent article in the New York Times describes what Google looks for when hiring people. Their hiring attributes include general cognitive ability, not IQ, and soft skills such as emergent leadership, humility, ownership, collaboration, adaptability, and "loving to learn and re-learn".

We can't help you with luck, but PCATT will certainly help you be prepared with advanced technology training. Also remember that Google looks for people who love to learn and re-learn. Listed here are courses scheduled for March and beyond. New courses and schedules will be added within the next 2 to 3 weeks so check the PCATT website for the latest offerings.
