MBOT NEWS & UPDATEStv
  • As the Federal Government prepares to present legislation to legalize marijuana, the provinces are poised for the windfall on tax revenue. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution at it's Spring Annual General Meeting to support a fair and level playing field in the distribution of recreational marijuana. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce currently has a resolution before it's AGM to lobby the Federal Government to mandate the Provinces to institute fair distribution. In other words, give private business the opportunity to engage in commerce, where legalized recreational marijuana is concerned. Mississauga Board of Trade urges the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel to include the local business community in all discussions that will impact decisions on who and where licenses to distribute marijuana are granted.  We also urge the municipal and regional governments to consult the local business community with respect to any "revenue tools" they may contemplate assessing for these licenses.

  • As reported in The Mississauga News, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie is calling on the federal and provincial governments to provide municipalities greater say in the projects receiving federal infrastructure funding. Mississauga Board of Trade supports the equal and important input of local governments in infrastructure projects.  It is important to fund good projects that properly invest in infrastructure, not just the sexy ones. "We applaud Mayor Crombie for speaking out on this and we agree with her that Mississauga must be fully consulted before projects are announced and go ahead," said David Wojcik, President & CEO, Mississauga Board of Trade.

  • In the provincial Throne Speech read by the Lieutenant Governor on September 12, 2016, the Government announced that it would deliver additional relief on electricity bills. The Government will introduce legislation that would rebate - directly on consumers' residential electricity bills - an amount equal to the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax, an eight per cent savings.  The rebate would go into effect on January 1, 2017 and small businesses will also qualify. To benefit more businesses, the Government will expand eligibility for the Industrial Conservation Initiative by lowering the threshold for participation and broadening participation to all sectors.  When fully implemented, participating industrial customers will be able to find savings of up to 34 per cent, depending on their ability to reduce peak consumption. "This promise is welcome news for businesses in Ontario.  Our members have been telling us that the high price of electricity is affecting their costs dramatically so any way to lower the price is going to be helpful," said David Wojcik, President, MBOT.

  • Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) wishes to congratulate GE Canada and the Province of Ontario on the ground breaking of the new "Brilliant Factory" in Welland, Ontario that will strengthen Ontario has a hub of advanced manufacturing. GE Canada's head office is located in Mississauga, Ontario and projects like this help support the Mississauga operations as well as those in Welland. "GE Canada has been a very strong supporter of MBOT over many years and a real corporate leader in Mississauga," said David Wojcik, President & CEO, MBOT.  "Announcements like this are good news for GE in all of Ontario."
