MBOT President Receives Prestigious Chamber Manager Award

MBOT President & CEO Sheldon Leiba addresses the crowd

Mississauga, ON (May 6, 2013) - "A very unexpected and pleasant surprise" were the words Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) President & CEO Sheldon Leiba used to start his remarks as he accepted the prestigious James G. Carnegie Memorial Award at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) Annual General Meeting and Conference in Chatham on Friday, May 3, 2013.

In his unscripted remarks to the audience of over 200 chamber leaders, Leiba commented on the unique and important role of chamber managers across the province, and the invaluable work they perform in their respective communities.

"The work that I do, I don't do for any accolades or recognition, but for the opportunities to make a difference in our community, for the province and country," said Leiba.

"I am extremely honoured and humbled by this recognition.   My success as a chamber manager is a reflection of the support I receive from working with great staff, Board members, volunteers, members and community partners, along with the advice and sharing of best practices from other chamber managers."

Leiba was broadly nominated for the award by approximately 20 other chamber managers across the province.

The Award has been presented annually since 1997 to a chamber executive that exemplifies excellence in chamber management and leadership, and for making the chamber network stronger.  The recipient is announced at the Chamber Executives of Ontario (CEO) Community Leadership Luncheon, which is held in conjunction with the AGM and Convention of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in May each year.  It is sponsored by the Johnston Group, administrators of the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan.  Accompanying the award was a $1,000 cheque from the sponsor.

Presenting the award was Chamber Executives of Ontario representative Gerry MacCartney (CEO of London Chamber of Commerce) and Ontario Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, Allan O'Dette.

MBOT 2013 Chair, Karen Ras, Enersource, was in attendance as well as Leiba received his award.
