2013 begins our 24th year in Downtown New Bern! Hard to believe how we've all grown!

7th Annual Valentine Card Show
and Sale
Our Seventh Annual Valentine Card Show and Sale continues through February 14th, and we still have a wonderful selection! The cards feature original works by K-12 Craven County Schools art students, representing a wide range of thought, style, and expression along with a wide variety of materials, including hand-made paper, oil, pastel, collage, watercolor and ink. The cards are $3 each and ALL proceeds are donated to the Craven County Art Program.
Each year we're excited to see what the classes have come up with. They often study a particular artist then do work that is inspired by that artist.

New Artists
Wide Mouth Frog - We know it's an odd name for a jewelry line - what can we say! But we CAN say we were impressed that this small start up business was written up in Forbes Magazine!
The work is created by self taught metalsmith Pamela Bellesen. Pamela uses sterling silver, copper, beads and paper (coated with an automotive finish to seal it). We love her fresh designs!

Houston Llew Spiritiles These beautiful pieces are made from American made copper, glass and wood. Finely ground colored glass is handpainted on copper, then fired by kiln at 1500 degrees. It's like drawing with sand, Houston says, then toasting it on a very hot fire.
Spiritiles visually share the brilliant moments that make up your unique story. As gifts, they share brilliant moments with the people you love. They can wall hang or stand alone, and will never fade or tarnish.
The size is 5.25'' x 8.5 x 1.75". Each has a quote on the sides of the tile. To see more |

When we were in NY last winter we met with some young people who belonged to a group of inventors from Brooklyn. One of the things we were most drawn to was this cutlery. Here's what the artist has to say about her invention. How cute and clever are these! Wait, what are they, you ask? They are a fork, and a knife. Oh! and a scooper! Yup, three in one. And that is on each side of the heart! I hope you think about how good looking the Heart Parts are before you throw them away into the sea of 40 billion other plastic forks that contributed to the landfills in the US last year. They have been made with so much love, that i hope you will love them too much to throw them away. First you'll think about hand/dish washing them, next you'll think about whether it will fit in your wallet. I thought about that too and designed them dishwasher friendly and small enough to fit in your pocket. Do
both for as long as you can, and when you're ready to throw them away, know that not only are they made with 6% less plastic than regular cutlery, but they are also 100% biodegradable. I hope you enjoy disposing of them guilt free. And when you break the whole heart into parts, I hope you know you are in part sharing your meal with someone in the world who really needs one. With my 'Have a Heart' program, I am committed to contributing a % of my profits towards causes that are close to your hearts.
These clever utensils fit nicely in your lunch bag and come in a package of 10 for $11.95. Order here.

Main Street Champion Awarded to Jan Francoeur On January 31st Jan was honored at the Main Street Conference with a "Main Street Champion" Award from the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Main Street Champions are designated by their local N.C. Main Street programs for the remarkable contributions they have made to the downtown revitalization process in their communities. Thirty-one individuals were honored for their contributions in 2012. This year's group of Main Street Champions brings the total number to 500 since Champions were first named in 1980 as part of N.C. Main Street's 20th anniversary celebration. "Main Street Champions are those individuals that lead by example. Whether they renovate a building, open a business, volunteer their services, or rally the troops, they step out in front and encourage others to follow. They are recognized for their dedication to their community that furthers the efforts of downtown revitalization," said Liz Parham, director of the Office of Urban Development at the NC Department of Commerce.

Downtown News
Life Is Good is moving - but just down the street - 228 Middle Street, right beside Surf, Wind and Fire! The Pollock Street Deli - has new owners.
Street Scape Renovations - the sidewalks on South Front Street will soon have a new look - continuing the bricks and pavers like the sidewalks in the rest of our core business district. There will not be the major disruption we have had in the past - when Middle Street, Pollock Street and Craven Street were done - their streets were dug up too. In this case it will just be the sidewalks and there will be access to every business. This project is paid for by MSD tax - what is MSD tax? It is an additional tax that property owners from the Neuse to Hancock St and the Trent to Broad St pay - 12 cents per $100 evaluation - to finance such projects. So we in the MSD District pay 3 property taxes - City, County, and MSD. Which we don't mind but don't like it when we hear people complaining about the work that is done Downtown - we get more work Downtown than in some other areas of town because WE PAY FOR IT! Latest word is that it should start in March. Wayfinding Signage System will be coming to our City soon - this project will be paid for with funds from MSD, DOT and and the occupancy tax that comes from the hotels - we'll keep you posted on the details. New Bern Gateway Renaissance Plan - this project will be ongoing for some time - but should eventually transform the Five Points area.
