Silo Marketing -- Not a Good Idea For Your Business
Colorado Springs Business Journal Guest Column by Michael Perini
Silos: Silver. Red. Multi-colored. Often standing alone or in pairs. All across America.
Perfect for a farm. Not so, when conducting marketing in your business or nonprofit.
Here are some examples of what I mean:
-
Y ou give a presentation to tell people about your organization, event or issue, but you do not mention your own services.
-
You go to a networking meeting, like a "business after hours," and you tell someone you meet, "I will call you." However, you don't follow up.
-
You post an advertisement in the local paper or have a mention on radio or TV but don't list your website address.
When businesses or nonprofits use the marketing silo approach to reach their customers, messaging is often fragmented and inconsistent. Not surprisingly, results subsequently don't live up to expectations. Consumers of today make a decision journey before deciding where to shop, what to buy, which cause to support and what special event to attend; coordination and integration of all your marketing techniques is a must-do in today's world. Using multiple channels to communicate, or touch points, is not a passing fad. In fact, it's based on three of the most important criteria of reaching your ideal buyer or supporter. First, repeated and reinforced messaging drives a higher propensity to buy or support. Read more

Get a Sticker on a NASCAR Car
Source: ADWEEK
by Robert Klara...Most of today's racing fans are too young to remember the days when moonshiners souped up their Chevys and Fords to outrun the cops, their hot pursuits on the back roads giving birth to Nascar in 1948. But there is one thing that fans miss about the old days: Those Chevys and Fords actually looked like Chevys and Fords. In a standardization process culminating in 2007's "Car of Tomorrow," Nascar's cars had evolved to all look the same. Which is why fans stood up and cheered in November when Nascar, popping the clutch in reverse, announced a return to brand-specific body styles. Come the 2013 Sprint Cup Series, the Gen-6 cars: the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Chevy SS-will look like the models you can buy in showrooms. Says Nascar CMO Steve Phelps: "The idea is to put the 'stock' back into stock-car racing." But the idea goes deeper than that. Nascar's hoping that the Gen-6 cars will rev up both viewers and sponsors. Internal research shows that 80 percent of fans have a favorite auto brand that competes in the races. Now that they can actually see the difference among the cars, "we're confident it'll strengthen the emotional connection," Phelps says. There's just as much riding on the auto-partner and team-sponsor side, too. Phelps believes fans will be more likely to go out and buy the victorious car brands-what he calls the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" effect. Meanwhile, on the sponsor side, the Gen-6 body style and paint scheme has opened up new real estate for all those brand names and logos whose money puts gas in the tank. Decals will now be allowed to creep past the front edge of the B-post, and for the first time in the racing league's history, the roof is available, too. "Teams now have the opportunity to offer sponsors more prominent placement on the car," Phelps says. Read more

Newspapers Search for a New Business Model and Seek to Build Digital Ad Revenue The newspaper industry is making only halting progress in the search for a new revenue model, but some newspapers may finally be providing signs of a path forward. More successful papers have gone further to change their cultures and put more efforts into increasing digital revenues by using strategies such as targeted ads. Most papers, however, are struggling.
Executives cite a host of obstacles, from trying to attract digital sales people to contending with the cultural inertia inside their companies. These findings are based on an analysis of private financial data from 38 newspapers and in-depth interviews with senior executives from 13 companies. Read more |
