Snow on Shabbat
As all the news networks have been reporting, it is highly probable that West Hartford will receive an accumulation of snow over Shabbat; and relevant questions are asked whenever this happens. Here are a few reminders -
  • Snow on doorsteps, sidewalks and driveways can be hazardous. One is allowed to shovel clear these areas for safety sake. One is also allowed to scatter salt.
  • To shovel on Shabbat, or to scatter salt, the Eruv must be 'up' and functioning. This weekend's impending storm is a good reminder to be in the habit of checking the status of the Eruv every Friday afternoon.
  • Making snowballs and snow people is not allowed on Shabbat.
  • If a snow removal company is under contract, that service may be provided on Shabbat.
  • Hagaon Harav Tzvi Pesach Frank zt"l, late Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem and the leading halachic authority of his generation for over fifty years, writes in his Responsa Har Tzvi (page 288), as follows: "On Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh Adar of the year 5717 (1957), there was heavy snowfall in Jerusalem. I was asked if the snow is Muktzeh and forbidden to move. Clearly, snow which fell on Erev Shabbat is not Muktzeh in and of itself as the Gemara in Masechet Shabbat states, 'One may crush snow into water on Shabbat.' Since snow is innately non-Muktzeh, the same law will apply if it falls on Shabbat and it shares the law of rain which falls on Shabbat and is not Muktzeh.
On rare occasion, in the case of an ongoing continuous snow for example, Beth David might choose to convene for Minchah immediately following Kiddush and not ask worshippers to return later in the afternoon. That decision will be made in shul on Shabbat morning and announced at the conclusion of prayers before Kiddush.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger
Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger divides his time between Israel and the USA. He serves as the Executive Director and Community Rabbinic Scholar for the Jewish Studies initiative of North Texas, which he founded in 2010. In this capacity he teaches adult education classes on Judaism and spearheads interfaith projects throughout the greater Dallas area. The vast majority of his time is spent in Israel, where Rav Hanan serves as the director of international relations for the Palestinian Israeli Grassroots Initiative for Understanding, Nonviolence and Reconciliation, which he helped found at the beginning of 2014. Although born in the United States, he has spent most of his life in Israel, having  immigrated at the age of 20. Following his B.A., he spent over 10 years in advanced Jewish study, primarily at the Har Etzion College of Jewish Studies and the Hebrew University. The first part of his professional career was devoted to teaching Jewish studies to young adults, primarily in various colleges of Jewish studies and seminaries in the Jerusalem area. In 2005 Rabbi Schlesinger came to Dallas to serve as the head of the Community Kollel, and he spent eight years serving the Dallas Jewish community. He returned to Israel in 2013. Rabbi Schlesinger is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America and the International Rabbinic Fellowship, as well as Beit Hillel, an Israeli rabbinical association. Adult Education @ Beth David

Exploring the Siddur with Mrs. Galya GreenbergTuesday Nights @ 7:00pm. At our first meeting together, we will look closely at the Ashrei prayer: How, when, and why is it said? What are the different tunes and when should they be used? In what ways does Ashrei exemplify Biblical poetry?  What does Ashrei reveal about what the author thinks about God? (and how does that compare with our own conceptions of HaShem?) Subsequent classes will be determined by the needs and interests of the participants in understanding the siddur. A knowledge of basic phonetic reading of Hebrew will be helpful but not a mandatory prerequisite! Please RSVP to Kim in the BDS office so that we will have enough materials for everyone. If you have a favorite siddur at home, feel free to bring it with you.

The Theology of Judaism - Tuesday Nights @ 7:00pm, in the library at Beth David. Resurrection? Messiah? Redemption? What does classical Judaism have to say about these concepts? Traditional sources will be used to explore these and other theological ideas that are associated with Jewish faith and thought.

The Weekly Parsha  Wednesdays @ 12:00-1:00pm This class is a "lunch-n-learn", and no previous text study is required. This group convenes in the library of Beth David Synagogue.

Talmud Sanhedrin, Thursdays @ 12:00-1:00pm This class studies a passage from the Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin addresses matters pertaining to the Jewish legal system. The group is hosted by Mr. Harry Weller and meets at the Rocky Hill offices of the Connecticut States Attorney, 300 Corporate Place.
