A Thought From the Parsha
This week's parsha retells the story of the night that Jacob had a dream wherein he saw a ladder connecting earth and Heaven. He declared when he awoke, "Behold God is in this place and I did not know". That sentiment, of being in the presence of holiness, is not limited to the geographical location of Jacob's dream; it applies to any and every place on earth where humankind strives to realize and appreciate the presence of holiness.

Without intending to limit our own imaginations or the magnitude of the verse, its sentiment surely applies to sanctuaries and chapels designated for prayer. Jewish practice tries to help us fulfill this spirit with guidelines for behavior and decorum appropriate for a place of prayer. These instructions include -
  • We do not eat or drink in a sanctuary.
  • We treat a sanctuary as a holy place even when prayers are not taking place.
  • We strive to keep a sanctuary as clean and orderly as possible.
We use our chapel daily and our sanctuary weekly; and perhaps due to familiarity and senses of comfort, we tend to relax and sometimes lose sight of the holiness of the place. Let us find rededication and resolve from the parsha and its message. Please -
  • Refrain from bringing food or drink into the sanctuary and chapel (except as needed by parents for their young children).
  • Upon departing, please leave the place where you sat clean and clear of litter and trash, with consideration for the next person who might follow you.
As a congregation striving in partnership, let us work together to achieve meaningful prayer experiences for each other as well as  for those guests who sometimes pray with us.
Adult Education @ Beth David
The Theology of Judaism - Tuesday Nights @ 7:00pm, in the library at Beth David. Resurrection? Messiah? Redemption? What does classical Judaism have to say about these concepts? Traditional sources will be used to explore these and other theological ideas that are associated with Jewish faith and thought.

The Weekly Parsha Wednesdays @ 12:00-1:00pm This class is a "lunch-n-learn", and no previous text study is required. This group convenes in the library of Beth David Synagogue.

Talmud Sanhedrin (cancelled this week) , Thursdays @ 12:00-1:00pm This class studies a passage from the Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin addresses matters pertaining to the Jewish legal system. The group is hosted by Mr. Harry Weller and meets at the Rocky Hill offices of the Connecticut States Attorney, 300 Corporate Place.
