"What's news and 'nu' in the Beth David community"
From The Rabbi Rabbi Adler
There are times that I find it disappointing, and there are other times that I find it redeeming. Just look at the two photos accompanying this column and I can explain.kosher Meat Kosher sealThey are pictures of the kashrut seals on pieces of kashered meat as they are received by The Crown Market or by Big Y. Notice how many different endorsements are secured inside the plastic. There are grocery items on the shelves of many stores that also bear multiple kashrut endorsements. The same thing happens in large Jewish population centers when a local kashrut agency might affix its own sticker on a box of cereal or cookies already bearing an OU or comparable 'hechsher'.

I find it disappointing that multiple constituencies feel the need to provide specific endorsements for their own populations, and that one endorsement as universally recognized as the OU or the Star-K is not enough. It casts a telling light on why the 'moshiach' has not yet arrived. Will he or she (who knows?), be modern orthodox; and if yes, will that be good enough? If the moshiach prefers to eat only Pat Yisroel baked items and Cholov Yisroel dairy items, will the more centrist plurality of the Jewish community be willing to sponsor a dietarily appropriate Kiddush? If we could use the time between now and when the messiah finally does arrive to resolve these issues for ourselves, it would be so much easier to schedule and host a reception with refreshments for when that day is upon us. Of course, we could limit the menu to bananas and grapes; but there might be some people disappointed that there was no kugel or kishke.

I find it redeeming that multiple constituencies are able and willing to work in a cooperative fashion to meet the unique and niche needs of each. The Talmud declared of the academic and halachic debates between Hillel and Shammai, "ailu v'ailu divrei Elokim chayim - both voices represent the words of the living God". The Talmud was adequately content and secure to be able to acknowledge the virtues and truths in competing, and sometimes opposite, positions. There can be two, or three, or more correct answers to a complicated question. On a multiple choice test, 'all of the above' is sometimes the best answer. Kashrut can be the laboratory where pluralism is tested and proven feasible. Undoubtedly, when Chareidi and Centrist and Open orthodoxy can all  find ways to cooperate, share and co-exist, transforming common ground into holy ground, some of our most painful rifts will have been healed.

It makes sense when our Rabbinic heritage teaches that the tables at which we consume our meals can be compared to the altars of antiquity whereupon our ancestors offered sacrifices. Wars have been waged over how to serve God, and has peace has been secured through the sharing of bread. Are multiple seals of kashrut approval on a single item virtues or vices? It fully depends on why they are there.
Standard Time brings changes to schedule of services  Standard time
Sunday morning, November 1 (or Saturday night before bed), we turn our clocks back one hour as we welcome EST. Standard Time brings certain changes to our ongoing schedule of tefilot. Please note the changes -

Friday Evening Tephillot - This service will convene primarily fifteen minutes before sunset, or about five minutes later than candle lighting times.
Shabbat Mornings - Effective November 7, Shabbat morning services will begin at 9:00am.

Fundraising Opportunities at Beth David

SCRIP-Purchase gift cards to Big Y, Crown, Stop & Shop and Shop Rite.  Beth David receives 5% of all sales.  This is a great fundraiser because there is no cost involved to Beth David or the scrip purchaser. Simply come to the Beth David office, purchases these cards in multiples of $100; and then use them like cash at the store.  Crown gift cards can be reloaded in the store at the cash register.

TREE OF LIFE-Honor yourself or family with a leaf on the Tree of Life.  Bronze, silver & gold leaves available. Our "tree" adorns the synagogue lobby, with many leaves ready to be engraved. Call Tracy to negotiate prices.

MEMORIAL PLAQUES-Remember a loved one with a bronze memorial plaque.  Each plaque costs $360 and will be illuminared on the anniversary of your loved one's passing as well as all holidays when Yizkor is recited.

BINGO-This is Beth David's largest on-going fundraiser.  It supports the majority portion of the Beth David's yearly fundraising goal.  Volunteering is an opportunity to meet other shul members and work off your MEP.

Call Tracy in the office with any questions about any of the above fundraising opportunities.
