March 28
- "Break Out" Shabbat. After Musaf and before Kiddush, all worshippers will be invited to select one of three 30 minute workshops. The workshops will be -

What was the purpose of the Israelites' slavery in Egypt? Facilitated by Galya Greenberg   We will study a selection of commentaries from rabbinic through modern sources that deal with this issue from various points of view: Did we/they deserve it? Was it the fault of the Patriarchs? Was it to strengthen faith? Was it punishment or formative? Participants should come ready to grapple with text and big ideas!

From Creation to De-Creation, facilitated by Heather Fiedler

The 10 plagues have been looked at in every way possible. In this session, we will compare the narrative of creation in B'reishit with the narrative of the destruction brought on by the 10 plagues in Shemot.

"The Forbidden Land: The Exodus and the Problem of Egyptian Jewry" Facilitated by Dr. Elisha Russ-Fishbane Until recent times, Cairo was home to a bustling and cosmopolitan Jewish community that rivaled Baghdad as the New York of the Middle East. There is only one problem: According to a long-standing biblical and rabbinic tradition, Egypt was the one country in which Jews were prohibited to dwell in response to the harsh slavery suffered at the hands of the Egyptians. What are the sources for the prohibition to return to Egypt and how did medieval and modern sages wrestle with this prohibition in light of the large and well-integrated Jewish community living in Egypt? This session will be devoted to close study of the sources of this little-known tradition (Hebrew, with English translations) and its connection with the Pesah haggadah.

Sefirat H'Omer (Counting the Omer)

One of the mitzvot of the season is the counting of the forty-nine days from the second night of Passover until the eve of the holiday of Shavuot. While most authorities consider this mitzvah today to be of "rabbinic authority", the origin of the mitzvah is Biblical texts. The idea of counting each day represents spiritual preparation and anticipation for the giving of the Torah, which was given by God on Mount Sinai at the beginning of the month of Sivan, on the day celebrated as the holiday of Shavuot. The Sefer HaChinuch postulates that the Jewish people were only freed from Egypt at Passover in order to receive the Torah at Sinai, an event which is now celebrated on Shavuot, and to fulfill its laws. Thus the Counting of the Omer demonstrates how much a Jew desires to accept the Torah in his or her own life. The counting of Omer takes place each night after dark. It is not easy to remember, so here is a link to help. Copy this address into your browser (www.ou.org) and look for the Omer reminder. the Orthodox Union (OU) will send an e-mail every day with a reminder and the proper number of the day.
