Special Project - A "Shoah Scroll of Memory"

April welcomes with the joys of Passover, and it ends with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day. A recent newspaper article announced the passing of the oldest known survivor of the Holocaust. With each passing year, the number of survivors decreases. Rabbi Adler would like to undetake the project of collating a Beth David "Shoah Scroll of Memory". This document would include the names of relatives of members who died in the Holocaust as well as the names of Shoah survivors in our congregation. The goal is to have this document ready for Yom HaShoah at the end of April. Please e-mail to Rabbi Adler the following information if you have any names to be included - name (secular and Jewish), if this person is still living, your relationship to thathat person. Dependent on the congregation's support of this initiative, the information may be incorporated into seasonally appropriate commemorations.

Jessie's Community Gardens
Jessie's Community Gardens is an initiative launched several years ago by Dane and Michele Kostin as a way of creating a living memorial for their daughter Jessie. These suburban and urban vegetable gardens are popping up in amazing ways and amazing locations, with the produce benefiting food shelters in growing numbers of locations. The newest garden is about to come to West Hartford as a joint project of Beth David Synagogue and St. Thomas Catholic Church. The proposed garden would be on the grounds of Beth David, and it would be maintained by volunteers from both congregations. The chairperson of this project is Judy Brenner. Beth David members interested in assisting with this project are asked to call Tracy in the shul office (860-236-1241, or call Judy Brenner at her home. Moroccan born Aaron Bensoussan,

Aaron Bensoussan

studied the art of Sephardic Liturgical music with his father and master musicians in Morocco. Part of a Moroccan rabbinic dynasty, his grandfather Rabbi Haim David Bensoussan was the chief Rabbi of Morocco and his great grandfather was one of the most revered rabbis to emerge from the city of Fez. His interest in Ashkenazic music and cantorial music began when he went to New York at the age of 14 to study in yeshiva. A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, he also studied at Yeshiva University Belz School of Music. He believes that one can enjoy a nice schmaltz herring with a spicy cous cous! His newly released CD "A New Journey" is receiving rave reviews.   With many cantorial and pop recordings to his credit, Aaron's repertoire includes his original compositions and Judeo Moroccan classics. The New York Times called his singing "stout and impassioned". On April 26, accompanied by Cantor Joseph Ness of Beth El Temple, Cantor Bensoussan will be leading Shabbat Tefilot at Beth David Synagogue

This event is co-sponsored by Beth El Temple.

Beth David thanks Aaron and Fanny Cohen for their sponsorship of Cantor Bensoussan and this celebration of the Sephardic heritage.

Please consider making a Kiddush Fund contribution to assist with the costs of the Kiddush Luncheon and Seudah Shelishit.
