Rabbi Adler Selected as 2013-14 RWB Fellow
Rabbi Adler was selected as one of fifteen rabbis from across the country to a one year fellowship at Rabbis Without Borders. Rabbis Without Borders is a program of CLAL - The National Center for Learning and Leadership. Founded in 1974, CLAL is a leadership training institute, think tank, and resource center. As a leader in religious pluralism. CLAL links Jewish wisdom with innovative scholarship to deepen civic and spiritual participation in American life. CLAL's interdisciplinary programs explore religious and national identity. The CLAL faculty, with its reputation for excellence, represents rabbis and scholars from many streams and disciplines, and provides cutting-edge teaching, lectures, courses, seminars, and consulting across the country. The mission of Rabbis Without Borders is to
- Teach the skills rabbis will need in order to make Jewish wisdom an accessible resource to help people enrich their lives.
- Create a cohort of rabbis who offer support and exchange ideas in order to advance this shared vision.
- Bringing together rabbis from across denominations to create vibrant Jewish and civic life.
- Offering insights of Jewish traditions to a cross-section of the American public.
Participation in this program will not interfere with Rabbi Adler's functions in the synagogue or community; rather, it will be an opportunity to enhance the quality of Jewish leadership available to all agencies in our community.

Beth David videos; going "viral"?
On June 9, at Beth David's tribute dinner, our new (our first) promotional video was premiered. CLICK HERE if you missed it or if you would like to see it again. The evening included an expanded version, "The Making of the Beth David Video", to see it CLICK HERE. Please share the links with your relatives and friends. Encourage them to share the links. Post the links on your Facebook pages. Let's try to go "viral"! These videos tell the story of Beth David; and it is possible that someone somewhere out there might see the videos and consider our community as a future home. It's an opportunity to create buzz and while it's a bit of a long shot, it's certainly not unheard of and may generate some positive outreach.

"The Three Weeks"
Every summer is marked by a period of three weeks wherein Jews around the world mark twp major calamities that befell our people in ancient times. These three weeks are inaugurated by the Seventeenth of Tammuz, and they conclude on the Ninth of Av. Historically, the first date was when the city of Jerusalem went under siege. The city of Jerusalem fell three weeks later, on Tisha B'Av. The schedule this summer is -
Tisha B'Av Eve (Monday, July 15) -
Minchah - 8:20pm
Fast begins - 8:23pm
Reading of Eichah - 8:40pm
Tisha B'Av (Tuesday, July 16)
Shacharit - 6:30am
Kinot - 7:00am
Minchah - 2:00pm
Maariv - 8:25pm
Fast ends - 8:58pm
Traditions and Observances
The intensity of the mourning mounts as the days pass. For the duration of the three weeks, we abstain from haircuts, live music concerts, and elective occasions when it might be appropriate to recite the blessing of "Shehechiyanu". Weddings are not performed during these three weeks; and when possible, we postpone major purchases and major projects. Shaving should be avoided by men whose employment performance would not detrimentally impacted by a scruffy face. Beginning with the first day of the month of Av (Friday, July 20), we eliminate meat and wine from our daily diets (except for Shabbat); and we also eliminate recreational bathing. Some men abstain from shaving during these final nine days. We try to avoid wearing freshly laundered clothing during these nine days, and washing clothes is kept to a minimum. The Temple of Jerusalem fell on Tisha B'Av and it was set on fire end the end of the day, and the fires burned into the next day. Therefore, meat and wine are avoided at the dinner that breaks the day's fast; meat and wine are not consumed until after noon of the following day.
The shifting political landscape in the Middle East has drawn all eyes to Jerusalem and to Israel. As much as in any previous year, it is incumbent upon all of us to use these three weeks to reflect on our personal and communal relationships with the Jewish state. Attending the services listed above, and embracing traditions that unite us as Jews, can be spiritually invigorating and validating. It is always in season for Jews to stand together. Now is a time for us to rededicate ourselves to the spirit of unity and common destiny.

An Urgent Appeal!
Mikveh Bess Israel is undergoing desperately needed repairs and renovations. The need became apparent with very little notice. The costs might very possibly exceed $20,000. Every synagogue in the area has been contacted and members are being asked to participate in a drive to help raise these funds. Donations can be sent directly to Mikveh Bess Israel; or donations can be sent to Beth David's Rabbi's Discretionary Fund with note that the funds be directed to the mikveh. The time is now, please respond as quickly and as generously as possibly.

Membership Spotlight
The Russ-Fishbanes
Tzippy and Elisha Russ-Fishbane are a gem of a couple who arrived to Beth David last summer with their two children, Ora and Abie. Tzippy is a clinical social worker with geriatric expertise and Elisha has a new position in the Religion Department at Wesleyan University and in the Jewish and Israel Studies Program. They are both very learned and experienced in Torah, teaching, and community-building, and we are very fortunate to have them.
Roselle Weiner
Roselle Weiner is a new member to Beth David. She worked as a librarian for 37 years at the American School for the Deaf and keeps her skills sharp working two days a week in the Beth David Library (consider donating your Judaic materials and especially children's Judaic books!). She has taught our youngsters some sign language during Junior Congregation and hopes to get as many as possible signing their blessings.

Fundraising Opportunities at Beth David
SCRIP-Purchase gift cards to Big Y, Crown, Stop & Shop and Shop Rite. Beth David receives 5% of all sales. This is a great fundraiser because there is no cost involved to Beth David or the scrip purchaser. Simply come to the Beth David office, purchases these cards in multiples of $100; and then use them like cash at the store. Crown gift cards can be reloaded in the store at the cash register.
TREE OF LIFE-Honor yourself or family with a leaf on the Tree of Life. Bronze, silver & gold leaves available. Our "tree" adorns the synagogue lobby, with many leaves ready to be engraved. Call Tracy to negotiate prices.
MEMORIAL PLAQUES-Remember a loved one with a bronze memorial plaque. Each plaque costs $360 and will be illuminared on the anniversary of your loved one's passing as well as all holidays when Yizkor is recited.
BINGO-This is Beth David's largest on-going fundraiser. It supports the majority portion of the Beth David's yearly fundraising goal. Volunteering is an opportunity to meet other shul members and work off your MEP.
Call Tracy in the office with any questions about any of the above fundraising opportunities.
