This month's quote by Harvey Firestone epitomizes why we bring you these newsletters every month... and, we hope, why you read them.

Some of you lead big teams, some small but potent teams, and still others of you are preparing to lead teams...but we believe each of you know you can't lead others until you know how to lead yourself. Which is why we wrote about improving your own self-regulation skills in our October issue, and in this issue, why we're showing you how to help/lead/mentor others to that same end.

If someone on your team lacks self-regulation, there's going to be conflict...conflict that's going to gnaw away at that person's self-esteem, and the team's morale and productivity.

What an opportunity and privilege it is, then, to not only have the skills to mentor that individual and create a real sense of community on the team, but to answer to your highest calling.

Whether you call it self-regulation, self-discipline, or self-control-it's a 'mind-muscle'. The more you exercise it, the stronger it will get.

It's not easy for any of us to see ourselves... to see a lack of self-regulation... to see the behaviours and processes that work against us, and against a team.

If you're a leader, however, you're in a position... indeed, many would say it's your very responsibility to help people see themselves and their actions in a clearer light, and mentor them through a development plan which is substantially aided by self-regulation.

It's odd then, to suggest querying yourself before you approach someone, but as it sets the plumb line straight, here is the two-part question you need to ask:
