A Dialogue on the Barriers and Bridges to Success for Women of Color STEM Faculty

 

Dr. David Leonard and Dr. Christine Grant will discuss barriers and bridges to success for women of color (WOC) in institutions of higher education and how to build cross-racial alliances. Both Dr. Leonard and Dr. Grant bring a rich combination of expertise and personal experience, and will speak from a combination of perspectives on these topics:

  

 Dr. David Leonard will discuss such concerns as:

  • How can "majority" colleagues address common barriers proactively to help reduce inequities that WOC experience at majority institutions?
  • What are barriers to majority faculty speaking up in support of WOC faculty and how to overcome these barriers?
  • How to handle "push back" from other majority colleagues?
  • How to address a common bias that somehow "excellence" is not synonymous with "diversity"? 

Dr. Christine Grant will discuss such concerns as:

  • What are barriers in the academy for WOC faculty?
  • What are strategies for success for WOC faculty?
  • What are experiences of "the only" WOC faculty in a department (in a college, or in an institution!)?
  • How can trends in interdisciplinary research advance STEM WOC? 
  • What are ways that majority colleagues can partner with WOC to help alleviate negative climate experiences?
  • What are ways for predominantly white institutions to partner in a meaningful way with minority serving institutions?

Our Presenters

Dr. David J. Leonard, Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of Critical Culture, Gender, and Race Studies, Washington State University  

 

Dr. David J. Leonard has dedicated his career to interdisciplinary scholarship, transformative teaching, and research that underscores the continued significance of race within popular culture, the structures of politics, and society at large. Dr. Leonard is an Associate Professor in and Chair of the Department of Critical Culture, Gender, and Race Studies at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. Dr. Leonard has a B.A. in Black Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

 

Dr. Christine Grant, Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Special Initiatives for the College of Engineering and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University

 

Dr. Christine Grant has devoted over 30 years to promoting and fostering inclusiveness for underrepresented minorities and females in the chemical sciences and engineering.  She is one of only 5 African American women in the U.S. at that rank of Full Professor in Chemical Engineering.  Dr. Grant is an accomplished researcher and serves as an excellent role model for underrepresented minorities and women in STEM. The "Promoting Underrepresented Presence on Science and Engineering Faculties (PURPOSE) Institute" founded by Grant is celebrating over seven years of promoting careers of minority and women faculty while providing role models for students at all stages in the pipeline. She also serves as Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Special Initiatives in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University.
