Congratulations to Chef Stuart Klassen for his victory and thanks to the following chefs and restaurants: Brian Boucher and Hayden Duval, Delta Grand Okanagan; Chris Stewart of Mission Hill Estate Winery; Andrew Portwood, independent BBQ competitor; Rod Butters & James Hanna of RauDZ Regional Table (second place winners); Carl Maerz of Twisted Tomato and Cheri Rosenberg and her team from the Watermark Beach Resort (third place winners).  The decision was tough but the brisket was tender for our celebrity judges. Thanks to Mayor Doug Findlater, Councillor Duane Ophus, Charlie Hodge, Lori Welbourne, and Doug Brown.  

Plus we got to sample the fine wares of Rollingdale Winery, Urban Distillery and Tree Brewing and enjoy the music of the 

Also Known As Band. Thanks to Gary Stabb with Good Guys Entertainment,

our talented DJ.

Global Travels

Emily, daughter of Elaine Ophus of our board of directors,  is heading to Honduras in November. Emily chose Habitat for Humanity because it is a positive way to see the world while volunteering and giving back to a community in the most sustainable way.

HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR
at the Delta Grand Okanagan
Round up all the little witches and goblins in the family and bring them for a safe afternoon of family fun at the Delta Grand Okanagan.

We are so excited to announce that The Source has
selected our Kelowna build for Star Mengede and her family for their 2012 title sponsorship and has given us a major donation. Plus, volunteers from The Source retail outlets in Westbank, Mission Park Mall, Orchard Park and from all over the interior of BC will help with the landscaping!

BOUNDARY AFFILIATE OPENS 7-UNIT HOME

Grand Forks Accomplishment
Congratulations to our Habitat neighbours in the Boundary affiliate who recently
of a seven unit multiplex for adult men with disability challenges. The seven proud new homeowners all did their sweat equity to help build the home. This small but mighty affiliate has made a big difference. Says Executive Director Rick Friesen, "our next projects are already simmering on the stove."

HABITAT IMPROVES LIVES
Partner families surveyed
Recently, the Toronto Habitat for Humanity affiliate conducted a survey of its partner families. Among the findings: Steffan Hacker boy new room
  • 81% of respondents report no longer feeling crowded in their home, compared to 25% prior
  • Respondents reported a 50% increase in their feeling of safety when walking around their neighbourhoods.
  • 97% of Habitat homeowners feel proud to tell others where they live, compared to only 44% prior
  • 76% of homeowners report an improvement in their children's grades; 88% report greater confidence; and 81% report an improvement in their social lives.
  • Of the 155 school-aged children surveyed, 98.7% are still in school.
