Helen Lukens Gaut established a successful career as a photojournalist in the 1920s, merging her love for nature, passion for motoring, and engaging writing style into pieces for numerous magazines. There are nearly 200 negatives in the Helen Lukens Gaut Collection at PMH.
________________

Unfortunately, these valuable photographic negatives are in danger.
In 2012, a photographic conservator and the head of UC Berkeley's preservation department visited PMH, and this visit uncovered grave issues faced by our all of our  historic negatives collections - although our archives are temperature controlled, the humidity regularly fluctuates. High humidity is a problem for archival storage in general, but it is particularly detrimental to negatives. Most at-risk are the hundreds of thousands of negatives dating prior to 1970.

The good news is that freezing the negatives can stop deterioration! Thanks to a generous donation by Avery Dennison, one freezer has already been installed. On August 18, we launched The Great History Freeze on Kickstarter to raise funds for a second freezer. . . and we are proud to say that we have surpassed our initial goal!
But we're not done yet! The Museum's ultimate goal is to eventually obtain up to 10 freezers; any funds over and above this campaign goal will go toward the purchase of future freezers and supplies. If we reach our stretch goal of two freezers ($4,900), all Great History Freeze supporters will be invited to a super cool ice cream party at the Museum!

Please visit our Kickstarter page to learn more and donate today!

When Johnny Came Marching West: How the Civil War Shaped Pasadena

Kathryne Beynon Foundation Exhibition Hall

On view through September 20

When Johnny Came Marching West explores the profound impact Civil War veterans had on the city and surrounding communities. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. California played a surprisingly important role in the conflict, with contributions of both men and materials, and after the war, large numbers of veterans, both Union and Confederate, emigrated West. This exhibit, curated by local historians Janet Kadin and Nick Smith, highlights and reveals intimate stories of some of these veterans and personalizes a war that is often mentioned only through its bloody battles and great loss of life. Artifacts and photographs drawn from the collections of PMH, as well as private and institutional lenders, documenting Civil War-era medicine, mourning practices, and letter-writing are displayed. Textiles, photographs, and other items from veterans and their social organizations are also on view, including period weapons and a Women's Relief Corp charity quilt depicting Civil War imagery.

Thaddeus Lowe: Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery

On view through September 20

Entrepreneur Thaddeus S.C. Lowe (1832-1913) is well-known in Southern California for his gas manufacturing plants and electric incline railway, but he also had an amazing career as a civilian aeronaut in the Union Army. This exhibit, curated by Michael Patris of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society Collection, illustrates his life during and after the Civil War and displays some Lowe mementos including his personal gloves, worn at a dinner party at the White House and preserved by the Lowe family.

The exhibitions are sponsored in part by Dr. & Mrs. Michael Kadin, Mudd & Michael Patris, and the Paloheimo Foundation.

Volunteers are at the heart of visitors' experience at PMH. Volunteers are often the first contact with Museum visitors. Dedicated volunteers assist in the Museum Store and in the Exhibition Galleries. Many volunteers work behind the scenes in the office, Reading Room, and at events.  Educational programming relies on volunteer assistance. Opportunities are available during the week, on select evenings, and on the weekends.

Come hear about about various opportunities at the Museum and enjoy a complimentary tour of the campus including a peek into the Fenyes Mansion, Reading Room, and Civil War exhibitions.
