The following is excerpted from this week's Curator's Blog post, Thomas Croft: The Man Who Owned Pasadena for a Day, by Nick Smith:

"Thomas Croft was an organized man. That served him well during his time in the Union Navy during the Civil War. He was an officer, and he served as paymaster on board a Monitor-class ship in the fighting around Mobile Bay. . .

A few years after the war, Croft became part of a business venture to buy land in California. His personality and paymaster experience left him as the one trusted to handle the money and the financial paperwork. The group wanted to buy enough land to create an agricultural community. Croft came west and began negotiations with Benjamin Wilson and John Griffin to buy enough land for their project, but the group didn't have quite enough money to make the purchase. So, Croft talked former Colonel Jabez Banbury into joining the group, as well as ex-Confederate Aurelius Hutton. Their extra money was enough to put the deal on track."

When Johnny Came Marching West: How the Civil War Shaped Pasadena

Kathryne Beynon Foundation Exhibition Hall

On view through September 20

When Johnny Came Marching West explores the profound impact Civil War veterans had on the city and surrounding communities. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. California played a surprisingly important role in the conflict, with contributions of both men and materials, and after the war, large numbers of veterans, both Union and Confederate, emigrated West. This exhibit, curated by local historians Janet Kadin and Nick Smith, highlights and reveals intimate stories of some of these veterans and personalizes a war that is often mentioned only through its bloody battles and great loss of life. Artifacts and photographs drawn from the collections of PMH, as well as private and institutional lenders, documenting Civil War-era medicine, mourning practices, and letter-writing are displayed. Textiles, photographs, and other items from veterans and their social organizations are also on view, including period weapons and a Women's Relief Corp charity quilt depicting Civil War imagery.

Thaddeus Lowe: Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery

On view through September 20

Entrepreneur Thaddeus S.C. Lowe (1832-1913) is well-known in Southern California for his gas manufacturing plants and electric incline railway, but he also had an amazing career as a civilian aeronaut in the Union Army. This exhibit, curated by Michael Patris of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society Collection, illustrates his life during and after the Civil War and displays some Lowe mementos including his personal gloves, worn at a dinner party at the White House and preserved by the Lowe family.

The exhibitions are sponsored in part by Dr. & Mrs. Michael Kadin, Mudd & Michael Patris, and the Paloheimo Foundation.

THIS SATURDAY - "Capture the Memories" Scanning Day

Pasadena Digital History Collaboration (PDHC) will be celebrating National Preservation Week, April 26 - May 2, by providing preservation tips on Facebook and with a scanning event on May 2.

Do you have family photos that show Pasadena's past? Would you like your family to be a part of a larger history of Pasadena and share them with researchers and people specifically interested in our community? PDHC is looking for family photos of Pasadena to add to their digital collection of online historical images. Bring in your photos, and students from PCC's Digitization Skills Certificate Program will scan them on the spot and add them to the database. Participants will receive a USB drive with copies of their digitized images.  For details, visit the PDHC website
