Image: Calvin Hartwell, 8th Mayor of Pasadena (1896-1898)

Born in Ohio, Calvin Hartwell first came to Pasadena for his honeymoon and stayed for two years. Five years later, the couple moved from Iowa to Pasadena.  After a brief stint farming, Hartwell was soon elected as President of the Board of Education and then to the Pasadena City Council. He was mayor from 1896-1898. During his term as mayor, the Board of Plumbing Inspectors was established, land use policy regarding the Dobbins Cycleway was debated, and the use of partially nude women in advertising posters was discussed.

When Johnny Came Marching West: How the Civil War Shaped Pasadena

Kathryne Beynon Foundation Exhibition Hall

Opens on April 22

When Johnny Came Marching West will explore the profound impact Civil War veterans had on the city and surrounding communities. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. California played a surprisingly important role in the conflict, with contributions of both men and materials, and after the war, large numbers of veterans, both Union and Confederate, emigrated West. This exhibit, curated by local historians Janet Kadin and Nick Smith, will highlight and reveal intimate stories of some of these veterans and personalize a war that is often mentioned only through its bloody battles and great loss of life. Artifacts and photographs drawn from the collections of PMH, as well as private and institutional lenders, documenting Civil War-era medicine, mourning practices, and letter-writing will be displayed. Textiles, photographs, and other items from veterans and their social organizations will also be on view, including period weapons and a Women's Relief Corp charity quilt depicting Civil War imagery.

Thaddeus Lowe: Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army

Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery

Opens on April 22

Entrepreneur Thaddeus S.C. Lowe (1832-1913) is well-known in Southern California for his gas manufacturing plants and electric incline railway, but he also had an amazing career as a civilian aeronaut in the Union Army. This exhibit, curated by Michael Patris of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society Collection, will illustrate his life during and after the Civil War and display some Lowe mementos including his personal gloves, worn at a dinner party at the White House and preserved by the Lowe family.

The exhibitions are sponsored in part by Dr. & Mrs. Michael Kadin, Mudd & Michael Patris, and the Paloheimo Foundation.
