100 years ago, the Tournament of Roses celebrated the New Year with a crowd of over 200,000 visitors at Tournament Park (now on the campus of CalTech). In addition to the customary parade in the morning, the afternoon's festivities included chariot races, Indian dances, ostrich races, and a half mile dash between a camel and an elephant!

Exhibitions
Current Exhibitions Pacific Electric Railway: Then & NowWillis Stork Gallery Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm; Open through January 13, 2013 The Pacific Electric Railway and its 1,100 miles of track connecting Southern California's communities ceased operation by the 1960s. It has become more relevant in recent times due to the MTA's installation of the light rail in many of our communities. Many of the modern MTA lines follow what were once Pacific Electric routes. This exhibition, co-curated by Michael Patris and Steve Crise, showcases rare images from our past and compares them with what can be seen in the same locations today. The exhibition also features railway objects and ephemera, including an original advertising painting from the Pacific Electric Railway that is being publicly displayed for the first time in generations. Three new paintings by renowned artist Harlan Hiney, who uses historic images to create new works of art, are also on display.

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been: 35 Years of the Pasadena Doo Dah ParadeRalph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm; Open through January 13, 2013 What A Long Strange Trip It's Been is a colorful, fun-filled exhibition celebrating the wacky world of the Doo Dah Parade, named "America's Best Parade" by none other than Reader's Digest. View photos of the parade and crowd shots; vignettes of entries - including the Synchronized Precision Marching Briefcase Drill Team; costumes and memorabilia of various Queens and music groups; and a re-creation of the scene at Pasadena's former Chromos Bar, where this all (fortunately, or not) began.Image: Doo Dah Fire Department. Upcoming Exhibition
I Do! I Do! Pasadena Ties the Knot Opening February 2013 "I Do" -- two words intimately associated with romance and marriage, will be the catchphrase for our 2013 exhibition. I Do! I Do! Pasadena Ties the Knot will focus on Pasadena weddings from our founding in the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The two-part exhibition draws from the Museum's costume and textile collection, fashion designers, and community members to spotlight the wedding dress as an icon of social customs through the decades. Formal portraits, engagement and wedding announcements, guest books, and other ephemera on display alongside the gowns, will provide a glimpse into the lives of local residents. Image: Wedding dress. Call for Volunteers
Would you like to give back to our community in the New Year? PMH runs multiple beloved, volunteer-based education programs using the Museum's resources to teach children about history and art in their own back yard. Each year, these fun and engaging field trips give hundreds of third- and fourth-grade students the opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture for a day.
Additional volunteers are needed from January through June, 2013. This is an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity for anyone who enjoys working with children. Training will be provided. We are seeking people who are able to give their time at least one Tuesday through Friday morning per week. Other volunteer opportunities are also available for those with differing schedules. Please contact us at 626.577.1660, ext. 26 or volunteer@pasadenahistory.org to join our volunteer team.
