October BOE Meeting Highlights
Good news from the district's auditor, a review of test scores, and an update on the middle school mold cleanup were among the topics covered at the October 17, 2012 Board of Education meeting.
Clean Audit, Financial Award
David Gannon, CPA from Wiss & Company presented the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the year ended June 30, 2012. He stated the audit received an unqualified opinion that is the highest opinion you can get on an audit and also added there were no findings or management comments associated with this audit.
Craig Lorentzen, District Business Administrator, presented the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award to the Board of Education for Fiscal Year 2010-11. He stated this is the sixteenth straight year the district has received this award. [see related article]
Testing Results Reviewed
Thomas Baxter, Director of Curriculum, presented the district test scores from 2011-2012. In the HSPA, the high school outperformed the district factor group (DFG) and the state in all but one category in both Language Arts and Math. In the Elementary ASK test, the district outperformed the DFG and state over a three year period from 2010-2012 in both language arts and math. Student group growth from third grade through fifth grade was discussed. The student groups outperformed the DFG and state in all groups. Grades 6-8 outperformed the DFG and were slightly under the state average in language arts but outperformed the DFG and state in math.
Mr. Baxter reviewed some of the new programs that have been implemented to improve scores. He said that the scores show that these programs have worked very well and that the district would continue to strive toward improving test scores.
MS Mold Update
Mr. Trethaway gave an update on the middle school mold cleanup. He said that the cleaning is complete and the rebuild has started and is expected to be complete in early November. He added that an open house and sixth grade orientation could be held in mid November with the students returning to the school after Thanksgiving. The board approved a contract for installation of a new wood floor in the gym. [see more details in Superintendent's Blog]
Lakehurst Discussions
The Lakehurst feasibility study to potentially move their students to Jackson Township was discussed.
Mr. Trethaway stated that the concerns from the Board were to be sure that the report was complete and accurate. There were some issues that were identified in the report and were addressed by the district. He added that the important part of this issue is to keep the lines of communication open with Lakehurst to do what is best for everyone involved.

Whiting School Wins $15,000 Grant
Whiting Elementary School is the winner of a $15,000 OceanFirst Model Classroom Grant for their Ultimate Learning Center project to transform the school's old computer lab into a state of the art electronic learning center with wireless technology, at least 10 Apple iPads, and an Epsom Brightlink projector.
Grantwriters Tracy Kiernan, Lindsay Yarnold, and Karen Enggren explained that Whiting School's computer lab was actually just a regular classroom that, 14 years ago, was outfitted with computers on tables lining the four walls. "The room was never really renovated as a true lab and gets little use beyond the one day per week that technology classes are taught there," said Enggren. Yarnold said that the grant project aims to transform the room into an Ultimate Learning Center that can be used throughout the week by classes at all levels.
"We envision this room becoming a focal point for electronic learning, as students look forward to learning in this state of the art environment," the grant proposal states. Classes at every grade level and in special subject areas like art, music and world language will benefit through the use of targeted apps.
"The staff, students and parents are so excited about this project and we are so thankful to OceanFirst for making our Ultimate Learning Center dream come true," said MTES Principal Dr. Scudese. [read full article] |
