In this first month of the New Year many of us decide to make changes in our lives. Determination and resolve are important. But unless we design ways to make those changes last, we will end up frustrated. So this month I will focus on Sustainable Change.
     Enjoy!

Sustainable Change

Making change in our lives and the organizations we lead is challenging. Even if we do pull it off, finding ways to sustain that change and not fall back into the old ways of doing things can be extremely difficult.

The key to sustaining change lies in the process of developing new habits that eventually become imbedded in our daily rhythm or the culture of the organization.  Imagining new ways of living and casting the vision are only first steps in the process of creating sustainable change. Once a fresh idea is embraced, strategies must address the question: 'how do we get there?', as well as 'how will we normalize the change?'

  • What is a change (in your personal life or the life of your organization) that would have the impact that you desire?
  • Design a strategy to get there.
  • How can you create habits that will support the change?

Defining Happiness - 3 Question Process
  • What is meaningful to me?
  • What is pleasurable to me?
  • What are my strengths?

Make three lists that answer the questions above. Pay attention to the overlaps. Focus energy in those places.

O God,
change is scary
yet we yearn for it.
Change unnerves us,
yet we know it is essential to our well being.
Help us to gain courage from
your embrace as we live into life's opportunities for transformation.
Amen and Amen
