Greetings!

Most pastors and church professionals are devoted to the on-going process of leadership development. Self awareness and attention to personal strengths are key elements. In support of that, this month's theme is 'Authenticity'.
     Enjoy!

Authenticity

It is easy to get lost. In the whirlwind of activity and expectations and decision making, it is not uncommon for us as faith leaders to feel out of touch with who we are and what we are called to do. We can second guess ourselves and set aside our natural instincts.

Finding the way out of the fog of uncertainty and self doubt begins with getting perspective. You can make that happen with an action as simple as taking a walk or chatting with an old friend. Sometimes it is necessary to get greater distance from the situation - perhaps planning a day off or personal retreat or vacation or sabbatical.

The essential key to becoming more authentic in your leadership is self awareness: being in touch with who you are - at your core - and what you value - deeply.

  • How might you get more in touch with who you really are?
  • What would be different about your ministry if your leadership decisions resonated fully with your authentic self?
Query for the Coach

Dear Sharon,

I am struggling with a staff issue. My Children's Ministry Director is beloved by the children and the congregation and we have a thriving program. I respect her giftedness in this area of ministry and we have had a good working relationship.

I am uncertain as to how - or if - I should address what seems to me to be her lackadaisical attitude toward planning. Her attitude that 'it will all work out' has, in my opinion, become problematic. This is especially related to volunteer recruitment. Parents are being asked to help out at the very last minute - often when they drop their children off for an event. When I raise the issue of adhering to our Safe Sanctuary guidelines, she says that the 'spirit of the law is always being followed - just not the letter of the law'.

I am not sure if my sense of this as a problem is just based in my detailed oriented-way of doing things - I know I am a bit of a control freak - or if this really is a problem that has gotten out of hand. What do you think?

Gracious God,
Help us to know ourselves as you
created us and
and to be ourselves
as you desire for us.

Guide us to a more profound sense of your light within so that we might be empowered to more visibly display your divine presence in our  thoughts, words and actions.

Amen
