Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Message from the Rector

Jean Rogers As we continue the transition here, I am delighted to announce that the Rev. Jean Rogers will stay on at Saint Philip's as a part-time assistant priest on our staff. She will provide mentoring and leadership in Children, Youth, and Family Ministries, giving support and guidance to Sandralyn and Stuart in their ministries alongside our many dedicated lay leaders. Mother Jean's compassion, experience, and joy will be a tremendous asset and her pastoral presence a much-needed source of continued support and connection for many of us at Saint Philip's. I hope that when you see her on Sunday, you will thank her for continuing to serve with us as a pastor, preacher, and teacher and for bolstering the good work being done at Saint Philip's with our family ministries.

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Robert

This Weekend

El Tiradito Community Vigil Tonight
Join St. Philippians for dinner and a community vigil at El Tiradito Shrine on Thursday, August 25. Together with members of the local immigration reform community, we'll remember our brothers and sisters who perished or are lost in the desert, and we'll learn about recent developments in US immigration and border policies. We'll meet for dinner at El Minuto restaurant at 6 p.m. (corner of Cushing St. and Main Ave.) and then at 7 p.m., we'll walk a few steps to the vigil. RSVP to Suzanne, borderimmigrationmin@stphilipstucson.org. The vigil is sponsored by Derechos Humanos. This is an early evening of music, fellowship, prayer, and reflection. You can attend with friends, family or by yourself.

Parish Potluck Coffee Hour August 28
The next Parish Potluck Coffee Hour Hospitality will be on August 28, hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with G-L. It is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality.

Children's Ministry Meeting August 28
Church School begins again on Sunday, September 11. Parents and others who are interested in serving in our Children's Church School are invited to attend an introductory session for adults about the upcoming Church School year at 10:15 on August 28 in Room 7. We will talk about the theology behind the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd as well as Dragon Slayers. There will be concurrent activities for the children in the Children's Chapel. A hot dog luncheon will follow the meeting to celebrate our Back to School Kick Off. We need volunteers -- come and see if God is calling you into this ministry!

Music Notes

St. Philip's Music Department is in capable hands during this transition time. Our Associate Music Director, Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, will provide needed continuity. He will be assisted by Dr. Thomas Cockrell, who will direct the adult choirs as he did during 2011-2012. We will see several other familiar faces, such as Barby Goldschmid (After-School Music and Homework Program), Natalie Hall (Cherub, St. Cecilia, and ASMP choirs), and Kwesi Pasley (organ scholar).

An interim director for the St. Nicholas Choir was just appointed: her name is Kimberly Waigwa. She will also assist with the ASMP choir. Kimberly introduces herself: "I'm a Texan who moved here to study Music Education at UA. I am a senior, set on the path to finish my coursework and begin my student teaching here in Tucson. Over the span of this degree, I have sung with every undergraduate choral ensemble at the university, and I sing with the community chorus Desert Voices, in which I guest conduct and act as soprano section leader. I have also been teaching piano and voice privately for the last year and a half. I feel incredibly privileged and honored to join the St. Philip's community and be given the opportunity to make some beautiful music with both the After School Music Program and St. Nicholas kids."

Calling Youth! An Opportunity to Sing!
The St. Nicholas Choir just had their annual Choir Camp on Mt. Lemmon. We are inviting all youth from grade 3 through High School to join us for another great year of singing and fellowship in the choir. We rehearse Wednesday afternoons, and help lead All-Generations Worship on third Sundays of each month, as well as singing Choral Evensong on third Sundays from October to May. The choir recently returned from their first UK Residency where they sang at Worcester Cathedral. Come and join our community of enthusiastic young singers! Opportunities to attend Royal School of Church Music Summer courses, and earn ribbons and medallions! Please contact Jeffrey Campbell for more information.

Join our Children's Choirs!
Children 4-8 years old are invited to join the Cherub Choir. A sense of sound, singing, and rhythm are essential developments for all children. Cherub Choir sings at Comfy Space services, holiday services, and an annual music festival, surrounded by their families and friends to get their first experience on leading worship through music. The St. Cecilia Choir is a stepping stone to the older St. Nicholas Choir, who sing with both the Cherubs and the St. Nicholas singers. Cherub Choir meets on Wednesdays, 4:15-5 p.m. St. Cecilia meets on Wednesdays, 4:15-5:30 p.m. We start on September 7. Please email director Natalie Hall.

After School Music Program Needs You
Do you miss your grandchildren, do you want to know what's hip these days, do you want to feel young again? Come join our ASMP family. We are a daily (Monday through Thursday) hands-on outreach to the community, changing lives. Our program serves 3rd through 5th graders from two local Title 1 (or economically stressed) grade schools. We still need some volunteer classroom helpers, especially on Thursdays, and piano practice helpers. This is a beginning level and you don't have to be a piano teacher, just able to play. Remember we also need helpers for a couple of very occasional jobs and we need substitutes. You will receive advance warning for subs when people are away. Last, we need a couple of people to fill in until the winter members are back. Contact Barby Goldschmid (237-8881) or see me at the coffee hour the next two Sundays. Don't wait - we begin on September 12. Sign up now!

Hear Youth Choir on Our Web Site
Please click the link on the Music Page on St. Philip's web site to hear choral music sung by the St. Nicholas Youth Choir, and Schola Cantorum, recorded in July, immediately before their UK Residency at Worcester Cathedral.

The Beauty of Holiness

"Nowhere" can be a comfortable place. Just ask the designers of malls, shopping centers, and chain stores. To take the example of a chain store -- they are designed so that anyone who arrives can easily find their way around. Jeans are always in the same place as are hoodies and shoes. Each place is nearly identical to the others, and they all run together in a sort of geography of nowhere. We are blessed to worship in a place that feels like "somewhere." It is a place that is unique and blessed with beauty. God uses beauty to speak to us and to challenge us to see in a more transcendent way -- to see the heart of things. Over the next few months, I will spend some time each week praying with one of the pieces of art that it is easy to walk by or to ignore in this magnificent place and write a bit about what I am seeing here. It will be a spiritual tour of sorts and a way for us to re-engage the beauty that gives so many of us a sense of home here. I hope that you will share with me too what you are freshly seeing as we look with eager longing with the eyes of faith.

The Carlota Crucifix
Christians have worn the symbol of the Cross on our chests and emblazoned it on banners for two millennia. Why would a Christian display a cross with pride? Why wear an object of shame and death? We wear it because, ultimately, the cross does not belong on the Christian; the Christian belongs on the cross.

Christians hold to the truth that the cross was intended for us -- for all of humanity which turned away from Divine Love. Yet, Christ allowed himself to be placed upon it -- the degradation of God was set between our souls and a grim eternity.

This is why we hold it up -- and the cross is meaningless if it is no longer a reminder of this fact. If we Christians ever find it to be a symbol of triumphant conquest or vengeful purpose then it -- the cross itself -- is mocked. Yet, if we can find in the love poured out there a call to know all those who are shamed, rejected, and betrayed as one with us and with the broken Christ, then we see salvation at work.

It is when Christianity has forgotten the shame that we have committed our deepest sins. We forgot what the cross meant and painted it on shields, marched to war, seized empires, and held inquisitions.

This is why I find crucifixes to be far more powerful than empty crosses -- an empty cross is so often just that. A crucifix, with the body of Christ on it (like the Carlota Crucifix in the Baptistry), is a reminder that this is not a faith without consequence and that we worship God made flesh and blood.

--Fr. Robert

[The Carlota Crucifix is on the altar in the Baptistry. It is said to be a gift from Pope Pius IX to Carlota, wife of Maximilian, when they departed to attempt to establish an empire in Mexico in 1864.]

Parish Nurse Corner

Carol Jones
Carol Jones
Now that Chuck and I have sold our home in Michigan, I will be in Tucson full time. I look forward to serving you as your parish nurse by assessing your health needs and providing appropriate interventions to promote health and disease prevention.

I will be teaching a 6 weeks Diabetes Empowerment Educational Program (DEEP) this Fall. This free program is being offered to provide people on Medicare with the tools to better manage their diabetes in order to reduce complications and lead healthier, longer lives. The curriculum is divided into eight modules cover-ing topics that include diabetes risk factors, complications, nutrition, physical activity, use of the glucose meter and medications. Stay tuned. Dates to be determined.

I plan to develop a Health & Wellness Team of professional volunteers from the congregation to add their gifts to the Spirit's work of healing in this space. The role of this team will be to provide guidance and support for this important ministry.

I will be available in the Parish Nurse office (in the staff office building) the first Sunday morning of each month and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. I would be happy to take your blood pressure and/or discuss whatever health needs you might have.

Peace & Wellness,
Carol Jones
