For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.
We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Prayer for Memorial Day
Lord God Almighty, we remember today the personal sacrifices made by many of our fellow citizens in the service of their country. On this day we pause, however briefly, to remember and recall those who gave the last measure of their lives for their faith, their country, and their fellow compatriots in arms. Grant that we and all the citizens of this land may have the grace to honor their good deeds as in righteousness we strive for peace among all the people of God's creation. Give us a deep sense of reverence for life that is tempered by a passionate desire for justice. This we pray in the name of the one God who creates, redeems, and sustains. Amen. (Adapted from a prayer by the Rt. Rev. James Magness, Bishop Suffragan, Armed Services and Federal Ministries of The Episcopal Church)
Memorial Day Office Closure In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the office, campus, and Church will be closed on Monday, May 30. Alarms will be activated. The office will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31.
We will be using Track 1 readings throughout the Season after Pentecost
1 Kings 18: 20-21, 30-39 Psalm 96 Galatians 1: 1-12 Luke 7: 1-10
FORUMS Sunday, May 29 9:00 a.m.: The Christian Scriptures--La Paz The New Testament: A video lecture by Bart Ehrman, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, followed by discussion of the lecture. Topic for May 29: "The Disciples' Visions of Jesus." This will be the final session until fall. The group will resume on September 11.
10:15 a.m.: Viewing Religion/Theology Through the Lens of Science--East Gallery Religion is classically painted as being conflicted by a scientific worldview. This problem can be traced to how man-made religions have been literally appropriated into the psyche of adherents. Therefore, it is not surprising that many religions are threatened by science. On the other hand, if people are willing to explore how they think theologically, a synthesis can be approached. However, one must be open to change. The Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Lindell, presenting.
Summer Choir Begins May 29
If you have wanted to sing in choir but hesitated to make the commitment, Summer Choir offers the chance to participate on a week-by-week basis. Adults and children are welcome. No regular commitment or prior experience are required; just the ability to read, sing, and to arrive at the Music Center 30 minutes before the service for rehearsal. On May 29 and in June, the summer "all-comers" choir will rehearse at 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. service. In July the Summer Choir will sing at the 11:15 a.m. service (rehearsal at 10:45 a.m.). The "choir service" for the month of August will be the 9 a.m. service.

Join Gun Violence Prevention Arizona and Everytown Survivors Network on Thursday, June 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at El Presidio Park (160 W. Alameda St.) as they "Light the Night" for a time of reflection, remembrance, and commitment to work together to save lives. National Gun VIolence Awareness Day began in January of 2013, when Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago. She was 15 years old. Her friends chose to remember and honor her on what would have been her 16th birthday, June 2. They chose the color orange, the color that recognizes the sanctity of life, the color worn by hunters to ensure their safety. All are welcome at this time of learning and remembrance.
First Sunday Food Drive Sunday, June 5, is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line.
Parish Potluck Hospitality June 5 The next Parish Potluck Hospitality Table will be on June 5, hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with S-Z. For families who choose to participate, it is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality.

Update from the Wardens
|
It has been another exciting week in the search for a new Rector!!! Our third and final candidate visited for three days this past week. The candidate met with the vestry, interim clergy, staff members, affiliated clergy and deacons, as well as touring St. Philip's and Tucson. Maintaining confidentiality about all candidate information is extremely important. The candidates have entrusted us with their hopes and dreams, and in turn, we hold them with integrity and privacy so that we may help lift them up in their vocations. The vestry has entered into discernment, the final stage of the search process, and hopes to issue a call by the beginning of June. We have been blessed with three excellent candidates of differing gifts and skills, and we now turn our hearts and prayers to the task of seeking the best fit for the people and future of St. Philip's. We ask for your continued prayers for open hearts and minds, and for awareness of God's will as this discernment process proceeds through the final stage. Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p. 818)
