Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

It is sponsored by Derechos Humanos and is held every Thursday at 7 p.m. We'll meet on Thursday, May 19, at 6 p.m. for dinner at El Minuto Restaurant. Then we'll attend the vigil at El Tiradito Shrine next door. This event is an early evening of music, fellowship, prayer, and reflection. For more information or to RSVP contact Suzanne.

Casa Maria Thanks You
and Seeks Your Help

A heartfelt thank you to all who turned out to make sandwiches for the Casa Maria ministry in April. Because many of our crew are winter members and are departing for their summer homes, we will especially need volunteers for our next sandwich making, on Saturday, May 21, at 7:30 a.m. in the East Gallery. Come help your neighbors in need!

Bill Roberts Ordination
William Bradley Roberts, former Director of Music at St. Philip's, and co-facilitator of the Parish Retreat in 2013, will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests on Sunday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Virginia Theological Seminary. Bill wanted to share news of this milestone with the St. Philip's community, with whom he and David have been and still feel closely linked. Bill marvels at how amazing this is to be happening at this stage of life, and finds that God is moving through this experience. He appreciates your prayers.

FORUMS Sunday, May 29
9:00 a.m.: The Christian Scriptures--La Paz
The New Testament: A video lecture by Luke Timothy Johnson, Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Emory University Candler School of Theology, followed by discussion of the lecture.  Topic for May 29: "Jesus and the Gospels." The May 29 session will be the final session till after Labor Day.

10:15 a.m.:  Viewing Religion/Theology Through the Lens of Science--East Gallery
Religion is classically painted as being conflicted by a scientific worldview. This problem can be traced to how man-made religions have been literally appropriated into the psyche of adherents. Therefore, it is not surprising that many religions are threatened by science. On the other hand, if people are willing to explore how they think theologically, a synthesis can be approached. However, one must be open to change. The Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Lindell, presenting.

Update from the Wardens

It has been another exciting week in the search for a new Rector!!! The second of the three candidates visited for three days this past week. The candidate met with the vestry, interim clergy, various staff members, and affiliated clergy and deacons, as well as touring St. Philip's and Tucson.

The discernment process will continue as the third candidate visits next week.

Maintaining confidentiality about all candidate information is extremely important. We ask for your continued prayers as this discernment process continues.

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p. 818)
