This Evening and This Weekend
|
Tonight! The Feast of the Ascension
The Feast of the Ascension will be observed this evening, Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m. in the Church. The service will include incense. Our preacher will be the Rev. Katie McCallister from St. Alban's Episcopal Church. While a student at the U of A and connected to St. Philip's through the Episcopal Campus Ministry, Katie was a ministry-intern at St. Philip's before attending seminary.
We are pleased to welcome the choir of St. Alban's under the direction of Stephen Keyl, who, along with several of our staff singers, will provide inspiring musical leadership for our liturgy. A festive reception, hosted by the Parish Life Ministry in the Perry Garden, will follow the service.
Woosug Kang Premieres Organ Work This Weekend Woosug Kang, our Director of Music, is being featured as soloist in performances with the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra in New Britain, Connecticut, this weekend. He is presenting the Western Hemisphere premiere of New Zealand composer John Wells' Organ Concerto No. 1. Woosug is also featured soloist in Francis Poulenc's dramatic Concerto for Organ in G Minor. Adrian Sylveen, artistic director of the Virtuosi, will conduct. Performances are Saturday and Sunday. John Wells' Organ Concerto No. 1 was premiered in 1996 in St. Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland, New Zealand, with the composer as soloist. Praised by commentator Michael Barone of the nationally syndicated radio show "Pipe Dreams," the work's three movements retain the traditional features of a Western European concerto with the additional influence of Maori melodies. Based in New Britain and founded in 1997, the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra is that state's leading chamber orchestra.
Spiritual Support Group for Depression Begins Saturday at Grace St. Paul's Sometimes feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and despair become overwhelming or persist longer than expected. There is no pleasure or solace in simple things enjoyed before, and it's a struggle to get through the day. Feelings of isolation grow because these experiences are hard to talk about. Sharing with others is good medicine for depression and is called for in our beloved community. This time-limited support group offers a safe place to share, listen, and be together during our journey. This is not a therapy group. The group is facilitated by the Rev. Chris Ledyard and Karen Hanson. Saturdays from 10 to 11:15 a.m., beginning May 7 through June 11 (6 weeks). Please contact the Rev. Chris Ledyard or Isabel Amsel through the office at Grace St. Paul's at 520-327-6857. Space is limited so please call beforehand to reserve your place. The expectation is that participants will commit to the full six weeks.
UTO In-Gathering Sunday The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church which was started by the women of the Church in 1883 and is rooted in the concept of daily prayer and thankfulness. It provides a way for men, women, and families to express their thankfulness for God's blessings in a tangible way. These UTO offerings go to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. This offering is a great way for individuals and families to reflect on their thankfulness and support people in need around the world. It provides a direct link between our parish church and the worldwide Anglican Communion. For more information click here. You will have an opportunity to make a United Thank Offering, and to take home a "blue box" in which to make daily offerings of gratitude until our next in-gathering in the fall.

Update from the Rector Search Committee
|
Search Committee Completes Its Charge!
The Search Committee has completed its charge, and three candidates' names were submitted to the Vestry this past week (the number was reduced by one from the number announced last Sunday). The Vestry will conduct further interviews in order to discern the best choice for St. Philip's. The process that started at the Day of Discovery is entering the final stages of selecting your new rector! Please continue to hold this process and the Vestry in your prayers. Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed: guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another and to you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. (An Australian Prayer Book)A HUGE thank you from St. Philip's parishioners, staff, and clergy to the Search Committee for their diligent and dedicated work. Committee members have spent almost half a year working on our behalf to lay the groundwork to attract the best applicants and then to determine which are the most qualified to lead St. Philip's in achieving the vision articulated by parishioners through the Day of Discovery process last fall. Bless you all!
