This Weekend

St. Philip's Day Special Music
earth from space St. Philip's will celebrate our patron saint on Sunday, May 1. First Sunday Music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will be Missa Gaia ("Earth Mass") by Paul Winter, presented by St. Philip's adult choirs with an unusual assortment of instruments. This work is in the genre of New Age/Jazz, which incorporates traditional mass texts as well as English texts -- needless to say, it will be very different from our usual First Sunday Music repertoire! Be sure to arrive about 10 minutes early so you don't miss any of the music!

The idea of sharing this work came from the ongoing effort to underscore our role as stewards of the earth's resources. Parishioner Susan Erickson said: "April 22 was Earth Day, and we are celebrating it just a little late. As we listen to this beautiful combination of voices, instruments, and sounds from nature, it will be difficult to imagine a world without nature, without wilderness, without clean air and water. Would you like to explore how, as Christians, we can protect God's creation? The Green Team at St. Philip's is seeking to get back on its feet. There are many 'green issues' to explore, both small- and large-scale. Get inspired by First Sunday music, and help shape a new environmental ministry at St. Philip's!" For more information, email Susan Erickson or call 608-287-8406.

Music Ministry is hoping to highlight this worthy cause through our music -- be prepared for some wolf and humpback whale noises on St. Philip's Day!

First Sunday Food Drive
May 1 is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line.

St. Philip's Day Festival: Fellowship, Fun, Food!
The St. Philip's Day celebration continues with festivities in the Plaza. Sometimes it is good to rediscover yourself, and on St. Philip's Day, all St. Philippians are invited to do just that. Come enjoy a cookout, fun, fellowship, and games as we come together and take the time to be with each other as the community of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish. Everyone is welcome at this wonderful event. ($10 person / $25 family)

We are pleased to welcome the choir of St. Alban's under the direction of Dr. Stephen Keyl, who, along with several of our staff singers, will provide inspiring musical leadership for our liturgy. Spiritual Support Group for Depression Is Forming at Grace St. Paul's
Sometimes feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and despair become overwhelming or persist longer than expected. There is no pleasure or solace in simple things enjoyed before, and it's a struggle to get through the day. Feelings of isolation grow because these experiences are hard to talk about. Sharing with others is good medicine for depression and is called for in our beloved community. This time-limited support group offers a safe place to share, listen, and be together during our journey. This is not a therapy group. The group is facilitated by The Rev. Chris Ledyard and Karen Hanson. Saturdays from 10 to 11:15 a.m., beginning May 7 through June 11 (6 weeks). Please contact The Rev. Chris Ledyard or Isabel Amsel through the office at Grace St. Paul's at 520-327-6857. Space is limited so please call beforehand to reserve your place. The expectation is that participants will commit to the full six weeks.

The process that started at the Day of Discovery is entering the final stages of selecting your new rector! Please continue to hold this process in your prayers.

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p. 832)

UTO UTO In-Gathering May 8
The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a program of the Church which was started by the women of the Church in 1883 and is rooted in the concept of daily prayer and thankfulness. It provides a way for men, women, and families to express their thankfulness for God's blessings in a tangible way. These UTO offerings go to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. This offering is a great way for individuals and families to reflect on their thankfulness and support people in need around the world. It provides a direct link between our parish church and the worldwide Anglican Communion. For more information click here. You will have an opportunity to make a United Thank Offering on Sunday, May 8.

May Is Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month
Asthma is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways (tubes that carry oxygen in and out of the lungs). Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning. You may have only one or all of these symptoms. Read more.

Carol Jones, Parish Nurse, is available in the church office for blood pressure screenings and other health needs you might have the first Sunday of each month and every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. She can be reached by email at ParishNurse@stphilipstucson.org.
