Psalm 148: 7-14
Revelation 21: 1-6
John 13: 31-35
FORUMS Sunday, April 24
9:00 a.m.: The Christian Scriptures--La Paz
The New Testament: A series of video lectures by Bart Ehrman, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, followed by discussion of the lecture. Topic for April 24: "Apocalyptic and the Jesus of History."
10:15 a.m.: Intimacy of Faith--East Gallery
A special exhibit at the Arizona State Museum, "The Intimacy of Faith," features a collection of Mexican Religious folk art--retablos and ex votos--from the Giffords Family Collection. Beginning in the nineteenth century, testimonies of faith and private devotion in Mexico took the form of oil paintings on small pieces of tin plate that became public displays of the efficacy of a particular saint's protection. In many ways, the freshness and honesty of these retablos and ex-votos convey an intimate vitality that distinguishes itself from the otherwise formal academic style imported from Europe that permeated nineteenth-century Mexican art. Gloria Fraser Giffords, curator, presenting.
Friends of Music Concert: Roth-Buchholz-Gibson Trio
On Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. in the Church, Friends of Music presents TSO concertmaster Lauren Rustad Roth, TSO cellist Theodore Buchholz, and pianist Tannis Gibson. After School Music Program Evening Prayer
St. Philip's After School Music and Homework Program invites parishioners to join them for the final Evening Prayer service of the season, on Tuesday, April 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the Church. The children read the lesson and lead the prayers, and their wonderful choir sings. It is a lovely service. Come rejoice and shine in the musical accomplishments of our children this year. (Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 17 -- our year-end recital and family dinner!)
St. Philip's Day Special Music Celebrates Our Earth St. Philip's will celebrate our patron saint on Sunday, May 1. First Sunday Music at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services will be Missa Gaia ("Earth Mass") by Paul Winter, presented by St. Philip's adult choirs with an unusual assortment of instruments. This work is in the genre of New Age/Jazz, which incorporates traditional mass texts as well as English texts -- needless to say, it will be very different from our usual First Sunday Music repertoire! Be sure to arrive about 10 minutes early so you don't miss any of the music!
The idea of sharing this work came from the ongoing effort to underscore our role as stewards of the earth's resources. Parishioner Susan Erickson said: "April 22 was Earth Day, and we are celebrating it just a little late. As we listen to this beautiful combination of voices, instruments, and sounds from nature, it will be difficult to imagine a world without nature, without wilderness, without clean air and water. Would you like to explore how, as Christians, we can protect God's creation? The Green Team at St. Philip's is seeking to get back on its feet. There are many 'green issues' to explore, both small- and large-scale. Get inspired by First Sunday music, and help shape a new environmental ministry at St. Philip's! For more information, contact Susan Erickson or call 608-287-8406."
Music Ministry is hoping to highlight this worthy cause through our music -- be prepared for some wolf and humpback whale noises on St. Philip's Day!
First Sunday Food Drive May 1 is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line.
St. Philip's Day Festival: Fellowship, Fun, Food! The St. Philip's Day celebration continues with festivities in the Plaza. Sometimes it is good to rediscover yourself, and on St. Philip's Day, all St. Philippians are invited to do just that. Come enjoy a cookout, fun, fellowship, and games as we come together and take the time to be with each other as the community of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish. Everyone is welcome at this wonderful event. ($10 person / $25 family)
FORUMS Sunday, May 1 9:00 a.m.: The Christian Scriptures--La Paz
The New Testament: A series of video lectures by Bart Ehrman, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, followed by discussion of the lecture. Topic for May 1: "The Book of Acts."

Rector Search Committee Update
Crazy busy! That best describes the search committee over this week -- during which the committee is logging 23 hours of together time in meetings and lengthy video chat interviews with each rector candidate. That doesn't count all the hours that individuals spent listening to the applicants' sermons, perusing their parish web sites, etc., in diligent preparation for those interviews! We're on schedule to discern and call a new rector before the end of July.
Hear all about the subsequent steps in the search process at the next Sunday update (May 1, 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery). We want to keep you informed about the experience, but we must maintain confidentiality -- no names or information that might divulge identity of any applicant.
As your role in this important process, please hold the search committee in fervent prayer as the committee decides which applicants are the most qualified to lead St. Philip's in achieving the vision articulated by parishioners through the Day of Discovery process last fall.
The search committee will present that short list of candidates to the vestry on May 4, and step aside for the vestry to take over the discernment stage of the search process. That is standard procedure for a rector search in the Episcopal Church. The vestry will invite candidates on this short list to interview in person with the vestry and prayerfully seek to answer a relational question: "Can we and this candidate together enter into a relationship with God, to be the people of God and fulfill our Divine purpose?"
Direct questions or concerns to the search committee at search@stphilipstucson.org.
St. Philip's Acquires AEDs St. Philip's original Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has been permanently installed in the rear of the church. Four additional AEDs have recently been purchased with unrestricted memorial gifts and a gift from the Foothills Forum. The new AEDs are located in the Music Center, the Children's Chapel, La Parroquia, and in the hallway between the Murphey Gallery and the church office. Our Parish Nurse, Carol Jones, arranged two training sessions in Continuous Chest Compressions and use of AEDs. Clergy, staff, ushers, and other key volunteers were among the 28 trained during these sessions. Rest assured that the ushers have a plan in place in the event of an emergency during a church service.
St. Philippians Recognized by ICS Since October 2015, Interfaith Community Services (ICS) has partnered with Banner University Medical Center-Tucson and six faith communities to give non-medical support, such as connections with community resources, to individuals who are at risk for readmission after discharge from the hospital. This Faith and Community Health Network pilot project has been well received by those patients receiving services from these dedicated volunteers. St. Philippians Bob Stanton and Chuck Jones (at left) are part of the team who were recently honored with the inaugural "Bonnie Kampa Faith and Community Health Volunteer" awards at ICS's Faith Communities & Well-Being Conference on April 8. The other faith communities, in addition to St. Philip's, include Our Saviour's Lutheran, Congregation Or Chadash, Mt. Calvary Baptist, First United Methodist, and St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist.
