Message from Our Bishop

Dear Fellow Episcopalians:
This Sunday, April 10, 2016, is our Annual Alleluia Fund Sunday appeal. As in years past, I am humbly asking for your participation in the important work of planting new Episcopal congregations in Arizona, as well as supporting existing congregations with
special grants to help them grow.

First of all, I ask for your prayer support of our church planting efforts, that lives may be transformed by God as a result.

Second, if you have never made a gift to the Alleluia Fund before, I invite you prayerfully consider this opportunity. Thanks to the support of your brother and sister Episcopalians, we already have nine new Episcopal congregations in Arizona, and we plan to continue this important work for years to come.

You may make checks payable to the the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona and send them to PO Box 52515, Phoenix, AZ 85072-2515 (please indicate "Alleluia Fund" in the memo line) or you may give online). I hope that you will be moved by the Holy Spirit to give generously to help further the spread of the Gospel in our great state.

Thank you again for your prayerful consideration.

Faithfully,
+Kirk
The Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith
V Bishop of Arizona

elixir of love flier St. Philippians in Opera at UA
Several St. Philippians are involved in the upcoming production of Gaetano Donizetti's sentimental comedy The Elixir of Love at UA Fred Fox School of Music this Thursday through Sunday, April 7-10. Tom Cockrell, Director of the UA Opera Theatre, will conduct performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Staff singer Larry Alexander plays the role of the traveling medicine man and huckster, Dr. Dulcamara, for each performance, and staff singer Bryce Tomlin plays the romantic lead (he's a tenor after all), Nemorino, on Thursday and Saturday. Written in the bel canto style, this opera is all about showing off the beauty of the human voice, so every character has a beautiful tune to sing, including the moving tenor aria "Una furtiva lagrima," which is sung in the second act. More information is available here.

Update from the Rector Search Committee

The transition between rectors is akin to a pilgrimage or journey.

Your search committee is following national and diocesan processes. You are invited to provide your dreams, wishes, and desires to the search committee, which will do its best to represent all of St. Philip's. While the search process in the Episcopal Church uses conventional personnel assessment of skills and abilities, it also recognizes that God has a purpose for each community and will provide the leader needed to achieve that purpose. The Apostles set the example for the search process for a spiritual leader when they called Matthias to take Judas's place (Acts 1: 21-26). They established criteria, assessed candidates, and discerned whom to call. We are doing the same.

St. Philip's entered the assessment phase last week when the search committee began reviewing 10 applications to determine the most qualified candidates for interviews by the vestry in May and June. While St. Philip's continues to solicit parishioner input, and the search committee will draw upon those contributions to set criteria and conduct preliminary assessments, it is our vestry that will make the final decision. This process respects the privacy of the candidates while ensuring parishioner involvement via their elected representatives.

Please support St. Philip's discernment by keeping the search committee and vestry in your prayers.

E-mail: Search@StPhilipsTucson.org

Praise to you, Almighty God, for all your work among us. Yours is the vigor of new creation, yours is the impulse in our new discoveries. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, minds to understand and hearts to hold your love as we seek a new leader, that together with them and You our lives will shine forth with your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
