Sunday and Next Week

Comfy Space Service "Comfy Space" Service
This Sunday at 9:15 a.m., there will be a "Comfy Space" service in the Children's Chapel. These services seek to provide worship experiences, including Eucharist, for members of the Christian community who tend to "wiggle" in church, as well as those who worship with them. Children participate in the liturgy, and the Cherub and St. Cecilia Choirs provide worship music. Sermon activities, music, lessons, and songs are designed to hold the interest of young persons while enabling parents and grandparents to enjoy the presence of God in a relaxed worship setting.

New Testament: Philippians 3: 4b-14
Gospel: John 12: 1-8

FORUMS Sunday, March 13

10:15 a.m.: The Parables--La Paz
Canon Ted Holt presents a two-part series on parables Jesus used to reveal the nature and presence of the Kingdom of Heaven. The March 13 presentation will include Jesus' parables of The Treasure in the Field, The Pearl of Great Price, The Mustard Seed, and The Leaven in the Loaf.

10:15 a.m.: Dante and the Inferno--East Gallery
As the Dante all-night reading on the night of Maundy Thursday approaches (March 24-25), we have the chance to find out more about the Inferno and its author. Dr. Fabian Alfie, who teaches Dante at the University of Arizona, will tell us about the author and his background, and introduce us to this tremendous poem.

Adopt a Window!
Our grateful thanks to all of you who agreed to "adopt a window" (donate toward the restoration of our beautiful stained glass windows) last Sunday.  Members of the Preservation & Endowment Foundation will be in the Perry Garden this morning, between the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, to accept checks from those who wish to settle their commitment. Recognizing that the six beautiful Library windows are costly to restore, we have divided that cost into quarters. Parishioners may now participate in this vital restoration process for a tax deductible $1,400 per quarter donation. Donor names, or inscriptions, will appear on each window. Questions? Contact John Bremond.

Veiled cross "Regular" Weekday Lenten Activities Conclude Next Week
Next week is the last week before a special slate of Holy Week activities.

At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the J2A youth and their parents host Lenten Soup Suppers in the Murphey Gallery. Hearty, homemade soups (including a vegetarian option each week), bread, salad and dessert ($7 person/$20 family). Why cook when you can support the J2A pilgrimage, share a Lenten tradition, and enjoy fellowship over a delicious bowl of homemade soup at the same time?

At 6:45 p.m. in Room 10, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt invites you to explore sin, evil, and guilt as realities that have affected us all ever since the mythical days of Adam and Eve and that Slippery Serpent. Weaving Biblical, theological, and psychological ways of viewing the themes of sin, evil, and guilt, he will do so in a way that will likely be quite new to you, and along the way expand your understanding of how each functions (as well as malfunctions) in your life and the lives of those around you. The evening concludes with a brief Devotion for the Close of Day.

St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m., in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series has showcased young high achievers in the Tucson area. On Thursday, March 17, the series concludes with harpist Claire Thai, presenting a program entitled "Glissando!"

Jeffrey to Perform at Cathedral
Our own Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, Associate Music Director and Organist, will be performing a Lenten Noon-hour Organ Recital at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix on Friday, March 18, at 12:15 p.m. Music of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor will be featured. Free-will offering. If you are in the area, you are most welcome to join us for this musical offering at the Cathedral!

Gun Violence Prevention Event
Please join GVPA (Gun Violence Prevention Arizona) and St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in welcoming Sandy and Lonnie Phillips to Tucson. The Phillips' daughter, Jessica Ghawi, was killed in the theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado, on July 20, 2012. They are traveling the country to share the story of their daughter's life and death and their own efforts to shed light on the injustice of laws that protect gun and ammunition sellers at the expense of victims and their families. Monday, March 14, 6:30-8 p.m. at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 3809 E. 3rd Street  (west of Alvernon, south of Speedway). A question and answer period, music by local artist Sabra Faulk and songwriter Mitzi Cowell, and light refreshments will follow the presentation. FREE, with donations accepted to offset the Phillips' travel expenses.

Sunday, March 20

Palm Sunday Procession
In a joyous celebration of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, St. Philip's parishioners will gather at the central fountain at St. Philip's Plaza (across the street) at 8:30 a.m. on Palm Sunday, March 20. After the Liturgy of the Palms, we will recreate the excitement of that first Palm Sunday procession as we cross River Road to the Church.

The other services on Palm Sunday will also include the Liturgy of the Palms and will be at their regular service times.

Rector Search Committee Update

rectors at St. Philip's

How many applications for rector have we received so far? None. In the matchmaking world of the Episcopal Church, applications go first to the Diocese for screening before delivery of the entire stack to the search committee in early April.

Meanwhile we're putting this wait time to good use by working on critical tasks:
(1) Creating criteria to evaluate the key document in the application and quickly whittle away the least qualified applicants.
(2) Framing questions that enable us to distill the essence of the person and their qualifications during Skype interviews with qualified candidates (no more than one-third) beginning in mid-April.
(3) Conducting a pilot interview with our own the Very Rev. David Gillespie, who has the resource-size church experience to help us test whether our questions elicit the type of information we need to evaluate the applicants.

Keep in mind that the search committee's task is to objectively evaluate each candidate and present a slate of the most qualified candidates (typically two or three) to the vestry. We hope to do that by May 9. The vestry will then conduct on-site interviews and discern whom to call as rector.

Direct any questions or concerns to the committee at search@stphilipstucson.org

For Statistics Geeks
The position announcement appeared on Episcopal Digital Network on February 23. Our web site averages between 60 and 100 visits a day (spiked to 200 on Ash Wednesday). On February 23, 24, and 25, we had 117, 107, and 142 visits. In the past 30 days, there have been 349 visits to the Rector Search page, putting it among the top 5 pages visited. Yesterday, there were 13 visits to the Rector Search page, and possibly not coincidentally, 13 click-throughs from Episcopal Digital Network. In other words, there is interest!
