Bach Marathon
Exceptional performers join Friends of Music on Saturday, March 5, for the 25th annual Bach Marathon. The morning session (10 a.m.) features "UA Musicians on Tour," showcasing international touring performers from UA Fred Fox School of Music performing Bach in some unusual combos, such as a bassoon quartet and a saxophone quartet, in addition to the more usual voice, strings, harpsichord, piano, organ, and oboe. Their programs will highlight not only music by J.S. Bach but also music by his contemporaries and others influenced by Bach. After the morning session enjoy a "Bach's Lunch" ($10; place your order when you arrive for the morning session). The afternoon recital features world-renowned organist Jonathan Biggers, bringing incomparable flair, style, and energy to the organ music of Bach. Tickets (available at the door) are $25 for the morning or afternoon session, $40 all day, and $10 for students.

First Sunday Music
Please join us for our First Sunday Music offering for March, on Sunday, March 6, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, when the Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices will sing Francis Poulenc's stirring Mass in G major. This setting of the Mass for unaccompanied chorus dates from 1937, and is marked by extended use of antiphonal dialogue between groups of upper and lower voices, or contrasts between staccato and legato, soft and loud dynamics, solo and tutti passages. The tremendous emotional power of this Mass setting is very appropriate for this Lenten First Sunday offering. The choir will also perform motets by other French composers, including Duruflé. So that you don't miss any of the prelude music, please plan to arrive a few minutes before service time. First Sunday Food Drive
Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line. Search Committee Update Keep apprised of next steps in the search process by attending the education forum on Sunday, March 6, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery. The search committee will describe the tasks they will be working on over the next month. Also check out our Parish Profile, which is posted on the Rector Search page of St. Philip's web site. It's only a few weeks until the application deadline at St. Philip's. So if you know someone who would make an inspiring rector, let them know about St. Philip's and the March 25 application deadline. (Please be discreet in your phone call or email. Although it is okay to alert clergy to rector positions that might interest them, it is difficult for everyone if that priest's staff or member of the congregation accidentally intercepts a voice mail message or email and jumps to premature conclusions.) If a priest expresses interest in St. Philip's, please tell them to contact the Rev. Canon Megan Traquair ( megan@azdiocese.org), who receives all applications for clergy positions in our diocese. Chapel Rock Sunday March 6 Bishop Smith has designated March 6 as Chapel Rock Sunday throughout the Diocese. On that day, the Bishop is asking each church and congregation members to support the Chapel Rock Campership Fund for the benefit of our children and youth. The experiences that our campers have at Chapel Rock are life changing and extraordinary. Please join with us in changing lives and help send children and youth to camp this summer! You may contribute to support the campership fund on Sunday, March 6. You can also go to Chapel Rock's web site to contribute securely online. Adopt a Window!
Our beautiful stained glass windows are in need of serious restoration work. The good news is that interested parishioners may adopt a window for a donation ranging from $132, for the smallest windows, to $5,800, for the largest. All donations are fully tax deductible, and as windows are completed a small brass label will identify each donor. The Preservation & Endowment Foundation is sponsoring the restoration. Members of the Preservation & Endowment Foundation board will be in the Perry Garden Sunday morning to answer questions about the stained glass window project. Look for us between the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Announcing Faith Community Nurse
St. Philip's new Parish Nurse, Carol Jones, will be introduced at the 7:45 a.m. service Sunday and will be available in the Perry Garden between services to meet you and answer any questions you might have about her role. Carol is an Arizona licensed registered nurse. She is a commissioned Faith Community Nurse (FCN), Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C), and has extensive experience and education in adult and pediatric nursing. Carol will be volunteering as the Parish Nurse at St. Philip's and beginning on March 8, will have office hours in the church office to meet your health ministry needs every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as the first Sunday of the month between services. Carol looks forward to speaking with you and getting to know you! March Art Gallery Show
Waterborne, a show of Original Watercolors by Martha Lee McKiernan, will be in the Murphey Gallery beginning on Sunday, March 6. The show will kick off with a reception from 12:15 till 3 p.m. There will be the gamut of what Martha Lee paints: horses and cowboys, pottery, and scenes from travel, children in their loveliest moments of discovery, and people experiencing life as it comes. As you wander among these paintings, know that creating them brought her happiness and she hopes that viewing them does the same for you. Operation Streamline March 8
Join other parishioners and friends to witness Operation Streamline, the "fast track" legal process created for the purpose of deporting undocumented migrants. We'll meet in the office at St. Philip's on Tuesday, March 8, at 12:30 p.m. to carpool (or you can meet us there). OS proceedings occur every weekday afternoon in the Evo Deconcini U.S. Courthouse, 405 W. Congress St. The hearing starts at 1:15 p.m. and will last 1.5-3 hours. Bring an official photo ID; you will go through a security check and a metal detector. Cameras and other devices are prohibited in the courtroom. Citizen observers are almost always in attendance. If you want to carpool, please RSVP to Suzanne Hesh, BorderImmigrationMin@stphilipstucson.org Wednesdays during Lent For your spiritual journey during this Lenten season of prayer and reflection, St. Philip's offers a noontime Eucharist at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays during Lent. At 6 p.m., the J2A youth and their parents host Lenten Soup Suppers in the Murphey Gallery. Hearty, homemade soups (including a vegetarian option each week), bread, salad and dessert ($7 person/$20 family). Why cook when you can support the J2A pilgrimage, share a Lenten tradition, and enjoy fellowship over a delicious bowl of homemade soup at the same time! At 6:45 p.m. in Room 10, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt invites you to explore sin, evil, and guilt as realities that have affected us all ever since the mythical days of Adam and Eve and that Slippery Serpent. Weaving Biblical, theological, and psychological ways of viewing the themes of sin, evil, and guilt, he will do so in a way that will likely be quite new to you, and along the way expand your understanding of how each functions (as well as malfunctions) in your life and the lives of those around you. The evening concludes with a brief Devotion for the Close of Day. Thursdays during Lent: Noontime Lenten Recitals
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m., in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series showcases young high achievers in the Tucson area who will dazzle with their professional polish, maturity and technical prowess. Listen to the newest generation of musicians as they ascend to the professional stage - an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. On Thursday, March 10, piano prodigy Cameron Williams presents "10 Fingers, 88 Keys." The series wraps up on March 17 with harpist Claire Thai presenting a program entitled "Glissando!" |

Hosts Needed for Dante All-Night Reading
The reading of Dante's Inferno on Maundy Thursday to Good Friday has become a well-known event commemorating one of the great pieces of literature, but it has also become a rewarding and powerful spiritual event of peaceful contemplation and mysterious beauty. The organization continues and we have had a wonderful response to our initial call. Yet, we are in particular need of Hosts. Hosts play an important role in overseeing the administration of the Vigil and are indispensable in creating the welcoming and contemplative atmosphere. Please consider this important opportunity. Also, if you are interested in reading or providing meditative music, there are still a few slots, so let us know. Send your questions and interests via email to Angela Wakeham. Because Easter comes so early this year, we have set a deadline of March 9, but, of course, we would love to hear from you before that. The Committee encourages you to be involved in this wonderful event. We look forward to your contribution to this special event.
Sound Tech Squad Ever wonder what it is like to be a part of a super hero team? Well we do not have one, but we do have the next best thing, the Sound Tech Squad. The Sound Tech Squad is a new group forming at St. Philip's to help make the worship experience at St. Philip's the best that it can be. Specifically The Squad will be working to get the most out of our sound/audio equipment during worship. If you are interested in joining the Squad, playing with sound equipment, or finding out more, contact Stuart Salvatierra.
Laundry Love The Laundry Love ministry invites parishioners to volunteer and experience an opportunity to directly touch the lives of others. Laundry Love takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Members of our Come and See community have partnered with the national Laundry Love initiative to lead this ministry, which provides quarters, laundry soap, and dryer sheets to help wash the clothes of individuals and/or families living in poverty while offering compassion, conversation, and connections with community resources. The Laundry Love ministry welcomes you to join us. To volunteer, contact Patty. To make a financial donation, make your check payable to St. Philip's ("Laundry Love" on the memo line). "...whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
J2A Rummage Sale The J2A Youth Group will be holding a rummage sale on Saturday, April 23, to raise money for their Pilgrimage. We would greatly appreciate your gently used rummage sale donations! You can drop off items in the Palo Verde Room in the Youth Center on Sundays between 8 and 11 a.m. (Due to limited storage, please call if you have large furniture.) Contact Lori Harwood or call 979-5126 with any questions.
Altar Guild Welcomes You! St. Philip's Altar Guild would be pleased to welcome new members. We consider ourselves the liturgical partner of the priest, caring for the objects used in worship and the worship space. We are part of an unbroken tradition reaching back to the time when Jesus was alive. Service in the Altar Guild is an educational and spiritual exercise and richly rewarding in our sense of community and care for each other. All -- men or women, young or old -- may have a vocation for Altar Guild service. We have work days on Saturdays as well as weekdays. New members receive hands-on training and mentoring from experienced members. For more information, please contact Directress Pam Henderson.
Opportunity for Adult Acolytes We are looking for adults who would be willing to lend us a hand as acolytes to supplement our youth acolyte program. Volunteers would need to be available to help fill out acolyte teams when needed. During a service, acolytes are an integral part of the worship service. Training will be provided. If you are interested in serving our church community by becoming an acolyte, please contact Arwen Newman or call 548-1699.
Casa Maria Lunch-Making Ministry
Casa Maria thanks all who helped make sandwiches in February (especially the students from Dodge Middle School) -- we made 1800 sandwiches into 900 lunches in a little over one hour. Our next sandwich making event is March 26, the day before Easter. Please bring colored Easter eggs if you can (a dozen each person would be nice) to add to the lunches. Come help us do God's work in the world, 7:45 a.m. on March 26.
