It's Not Too Late to Discover Your Purpose!
You still may attend our Lenten Retreat Day: Discover Your Purpose with the Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle. Learn how what you love to do is your spiritual fingerprint; do an Appreciative Inquiry into your own life and discover yourself at your best; discern, from you at your best doing what you love, your core God-given purpose for being. Rob will enhance your ability to delight in yourself, your neighbor, and God through this insightful, practical, loving, professionally grounded, appreciative, and inspiring curriculum. Saturday, February 27, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No charge; lunch included. At this late date, registration is closed, but if you show up on Saturday there will definitely be a workbook for you ... and quite possibly lunch as well. Casa Maria Outreach Program
Every four weeks on a Saturday, volunteers come together at St. Philip's to make sandwiches for the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen. We make 900 lunches, each with two sandwiches and a piece of fruit. We also send them soup makings for their soup vats, including chopped fresh vegetables, rice, potatoes, and canned vegetables. Please come join us in doing God's work in the world. The next date is this Saturday, February 27. Come join us at 7:30 a.m. in the East Gallery to help our neighbors in need. True Concord
True Concord (formerly Tucson Chamber Artists) presents "King of Instruments," a program of music for choir and organ to feature outstanding pipe organs in the area February 26-28. The program, which will be performed at St. Philip's on Saturday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m., includes works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Howells, as well as Britten's whimsical Rejoice in the Lamb and Pärt's spellbinding Beatitudes. Click here for more information. Guest Preacher Rob Voyle
Our guest preacher at the 7:45, 9, and 11:15 a.m. services Sunday, February 28, is the Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle. He is the author of the process being used in the Rector search, including the parish Day of Discovery last October, as well as facilitator of our Lenten Retreat Day on Saturday. Rob Voyle is a New Zealand born and trained Episcopal Priest with over twenty years of experience in the ordained ministry. He has a doctorate in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary in addition to degrees in Theology, Counseling, and Mechanical Engineering. His employment history includes extensive work as an interim pastor, interposed with research and development engineering, behavioral medicine, clinical psychology, coaching and organizational consulting. In his parish ministry he has focussed on pastoral counseling for both individuals and churches in transition. As the founder and Director of the Clergy Leadership Institute, Rob is committed to providing advanced training in clergy leadership to enhance ministry effectiveness. Rob's personal mission is to be "helpful, humorous, and healing," which is manifested in a passion for conducting training. He is a gifted storyteller and has a penchant for mischievously confronting listeners with new insights that are both affirming and liberating. Parish Potluck Hospitality This Sunday!
The next Parish Potluck Hospitality Table will be on February 28, hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with G-M. For families who choose to participate, it is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality. During Lent, the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service will follow the Rite I liturgy. Please note that incense will be used at 11:15 a.m. services during Lent. Other Sunday services will follow the usual schedule and format.

Bach Marathon March 5
Exceptional performers join Friends of Music on Saturday, March 5, for the 25th annual Bach Marathon. The morning session (10 a.m.) features "UA Musicians on Tour," showcasing international touring performers from UA Fred Fox School of Music performing Bach in some unusual combos, such as a bassoon quartet and a saxophone quartet, in addition to the more usual voice, strings, harpsichord, piano, organ, and oboe. Their programs will highlight not only music by J.S. Bach but also music by his contemporaries and others influenced by Bach. After the morning session enjoy a "Bach's Lunch" ($10; place your order when you arrive for the morning session). The afternoon recital features world-renowned organist Jonathan Biggers, bringing incomparable flair, style, and energy to the organ music of Bach. Tickets (available at the door) are $25 for the morning or afternoon session, $40 all day, and $10 for students. Wednesdays during Lent
For your spiritual journey during this Lenten season of prayer and reflection, St. Philip's offers a noontime Eucharist at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays during Lent. At 6 p.m., the J2A youth and their parents host Lenten Soup Suppers in the Murphey Gallery. Hearty, homemade soups (including a vegetarian option each week), bread, salad and dessert ($7 person/$20 family). Why cook when you can support the J2A pilgrimage, share a Lenten tradition, and enjoy fellowship over a delicious bowl of homemade soup at the same time? At 6:45 p.m. in Room 10, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt invites you to explore sin, evil, and guilt as realities that have affected us all ever since the mythical days of Adam and Eve and that Slippery Serpent. Weaving Biblical, theological, and psychological ways of viewing the themes of sin, evil, and guilt, he will do so in a way that will likely be quite new to you, and along the way expand your understanding of how each functions (as well as malfunctions) in your life and the lives of those around you. The evening will conclude with a brief Devotion for the Close of Day. Thursdays during Lent: Noontime Lenten Recitals
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m., in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series showcases young high achievers in the Tucson area who will dazzle with their professional polish, maturity and technical prowess. Listen to the newest generation of musicians as they ascend to the professional stage -- an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. On Thursday, March 3, violinist Carissa Powe presents "The Voice of the Violin." The series continues through March 17. March First Sunday Music Please join us for our First Sunday Music offering for March, on Sunday, March 6, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, when the Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices will sing Francis Poulenc's stirring Mass in G major. This setting of the Mass for unaccompanied chorus dates from 1937, and is marked by extended use of antiphonal dialogue between groups of upper and lower voices, or contrasts between staccato and legato, soft and loud dynamics, solo and tutti passages. The tremendous emotional power of this Mass setting is very appropriate for this Lenten First Sunday offering. The choir will also perform motets by other French composers, including Duruflé. So that you don't miss any of the prelude music, please plan to arrive a few minutes before service time.
Chapel Rock Sunday March 6Bishop Smith has designated March 6 as Chapel Rock Sunday throughout the Diocese. On that day, the Bishop is asking each church and congregation members to support the Chapel Rock Campership Fund for the benefit of our children and youth. The experiences that our campers have at Chapel Rock are life changing and extraordinary. Please join with us in changing lives and help send children and youth to camp this summer! You may contribute to support the campership fund on Sunday, March 6. You can also go to Chapel Rock's web site to contribute securely online. Announcing Faith Community Nurse
St. Philip's new Parish Nurse, Carol Jones, will be available in the Perry Garden between services on Sunday, March 6, to meet you and answer any questions you might have about her role. Carol is an Arizona licensed registered nurse. She is a commissioned Faith Community Nurse (FCN), Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C), and has extensive experience and education in adult and pediatric nursing. Carol will be volunteering as the Parish Nurse at St. Philip's and beginning on March 8, will have office hours in the church office to meet your health ministry needs every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as the first Sunday of the month between services. Carol looks forward to speaking with you and getting to know you! March Art Gallery Show Waterborne, a show of Original Watercolors by Martha Lee McKiernan, will be in the Murphey Gallery beginning on Sunday, March 6. The show will kick off with a reception that day from 12:15 till 3 p.m. There will be the gamut of what Martha Lee paints: horses and cowboys, pottery, and scenes from travel, children in their loveliest moments of discovery, and people experiencing life as it comes. As you wander among these paintings, know that creating them brought her happiness and she hopes that viewing them does the same for you. |

Search Committee Update
Check out our Parish Profile! After St. Philip's submitted formal advertisements for our next rector, the subsequent task for the Search Committee was our Parish Profile -- an electronic executive search brochure uploaded a few days ago. Click here to read the document. This vivid snapshot of St. Philip's includes a brief history; descriptions of liturgy, music, and the range of programs we offer; strengths and challenges; 5-year plan; and the type of reports and statistics that a prospective rector will review to gauge the health of our congregation.
Candidates have until March 25 to submit an application. If you know priests whom you would like to be considered for our next rector, speak to them directly. If they are interested tell them to contact the Rev. Canon Megan Traquair (megan@azdiocese.org).
The search process for a new rector is complicated. Stay apprised of this exciting journey by attending next week's (March 6) vestry presentation at the 10:15 a.m. Adult Formation hour in the Murphey Gallery, and every first Sunday thereafter until the search is complete. The Search Committee welcomes your comments and suggestions; for example, in the Parish Profile, the committee is trying to convey the essence of your church in words and pictures -- let us know what you think about this document, and why you think that way: search@stphilipstucson.org
Adopt a Window! Our beautiful stained glass windows are in need of serious restoration work. The good news is that interested parishioners may adopt a window for a donation ranging from $132, for the smallest windows, to $5,800, for the largest. All donations are fully tax deductible, and as windows are completed a small brass label will identify each donor. The Preservation & Endowment Foundation is sponsoring the restoration. You will find a map of each window, with its cost, located below the P&E board on the walkway leading down to the Murphey Gallery. Questions? Contact John Bremond.
Serve as a Host at the Dante All-Night Reading The reading of Dante's Inferno on Maundy Thursday to Good Friday has become a well-known event commemorating one of the great pieces of literature, but is also a rewarding and powerful spiritual event of peaceful contemplation and mysterious beauty. The organization continues and we have had a wonderful response to our initial call. Yet, we are in particular need of Hosts. Hosts play an important role in overseeing the administration of the event and are indispensable in creating the welcoming and contemplative atmosphere. Please consider this important opportunity. Also, if you are interested in reading or performing there are still a few slots, so let us know. Send your questions and interests via email to Angela Wakeham. Because Easter is coming soon, we have set a deadline of March 6, but, of course, we would love to hear from you before that. The Committee encourages you to be involved in this wonderful event. We look forward to your contribution to this special event.
J2A Rummage Sale Donations Accepted Now The J2A Youth Group will be holding a rummage sale on Saturday, April 23, to raise money for their Pilgrimage. We would greatly appreciate your gently used rummage sale donations! You can drop off items in the Palo Verde Room in the Youth Center on Sundays between 8 and 11 a.m. (Due to limited storage, please call if you have large furniture.) Contact Lori Harwood or call 979-5126 with any questions.
