Special Event: Lenten Retreat Day
| Listen to this YouTube video of Rob Voyle describing his program. Obviously they are talking about an offering in Rhode Island, but the discussion of content applies to this retreat!
| Rob Voyle discusses Discovering Your Purpose |
Special Lenten Retreat Day: Discover Your PurposeHere is your opportunity to have your own personal "Day of Discovery," to look at your own future using the same Appreciative Inquiry process we used at the Parish Day of Discovery last fall. Learn how what you love to do is your spiritual fingerprint; do an Appreciative Inquiry into your own life and discover yourself at your best; discern, from you at your best doing what you love, your core God-given purpose for being. The Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle is a leader in the development and use of appreciative coaching. Rob will enhance your ability to delight in yourself, your neighbor, and God through his insightful, practical, loving, professionally grounded, appreciative, and often mischievous coaching and teaching skills. Saturday, February 27, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No charge; lunch included. To register, click here, or call the office at 299-6421, and give your name and information to the receptionist.
It is important to register so we can be sure to have enough food for you!
Please note: This retreat is different from the training being offered by the Rev. Dr. Voyle for clergy and other professionals on Friday, February 26. To register for that event, "Teach Them How to Forgive," click here. The church office is not involved in registrations for the Friday in-service training. |

"Speaking of Dying" Workshop
On Monday, February 22, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Philip's, Interfaith Community Services presents a workshop entitled "Speaking of Dying: Family Dynamics at the End of Life." In a culture scared to death of dying, how do we, as people of faith, engage with individuals and families in having life-giving conversations about dying? Join us for an inspiring forum that will include examples of family interactions in end-of-life situations, information on advance care planning, techniques and approaches to beneficial family dynamics in end-of-life situations, and table conversations to learn from each other. The cost is $10 and includes breakfast and materials. Click here to register. Casa Maria Outreach Program
Every four weeks on a Saturday, volunteers come together at St. Philip's to make sandwiches for the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen. We make 900 lunches, each with two sandwiches and a piece of fruit. We also send them soup makings for their soup vats, including chopped fresh vegetables, rice, potatoes, and canned vegetables. Please come join us in doing God's work in the world. The next date is Saturday, February 27. Come join us at 7:30 a.m. in the East Gallery to help our neighbors in need. Wednesdays during Lent
For your spiritual journey during this Lenten season of prayer and reflection, St. Philip's offers a noontime Eucharist at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays during Lent. At 6 p.m., the J2A youth and their parents host Lenten Soup Suppers in the Murphey Gallery. Hearty, homemade soups (including a vegetarian option each week), bread, salad and dessert ($7 person/$20 family). Why cook when you can support the J2A pilgrimage, share a Lenten tradition, and enjoy fellowship over a delicious bowl of homemade soup at the same time? Contact Mary Paul with questions or for more information (marypaul518@gmail.com). At 6:45 p.m. in Room 10, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt invites you to explore sin, evil, and guilt as realities that have affected us all ever since the mythical days of Adam and Eve and that Slippery Serpent. Weaving Biblical, theological, and psychological ways of viewing the themes of sin, evil, and guilt, he will do so in a way that will likely be quite new to you, and along the way expand your understanding of how each functions (as well as malfunctions) in your life and the lives of those around you. The evening will conclude with a brief Devotion for the Close of Day. Thursdays during Lent: Noontime Lenten Recitals St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m., in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series showcases young high achievers in the Tucson area who will dazzle with their professional polish, maturity and technical prowess. Listen to the newest generation of musicians as they ascend to the professional stage - an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. On Thursday, February 25, our own Daniel Rosenberg, baritone, presents "The Life of the Wanderer." The series continues through March 17. True Concord
True Concord (formerly Tucson Chamber Artists) presents "King of Instruments," a program of music for choir and organ to feature outstanding pipe organs in the area February 26-28. The program, which will be performed at St. Philip's on Saturday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m., includes works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Howells, as well as Britten's whimsical Rejoice in the Lamb and Pärt's spellbinding Beatitudes. Click here for more information. Parish Potluck Hospitality February 28
The next Parish Potluck Hospitality Table will be on February 28, hosted by parishioners whose last names begin with G-M. For families who choose to participate, it is suggested that you bring food in three categories: 1. Sweet Treats; 2. Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." If possible, food contributions should be at the table shortly after the 7:45 service so people attending that service can enjoy the food and hospitality. |

Youth Lenten Blog Not Just for Youth
The new youth devotional blog, apointofdeparture, publishes every Tuesday and Thursday. These short entries look at the upcoming Sunday's lectionary readings, focusing on issues that can come up from the text, as a way to help keep our minds focused on our walks with Christ through Lent and beyond. Stuart Salvatierra, Director of Youth Ministries, invites everyone to check it out and join in discussion as you feel the desire to do so. Click here to access the blog.
Ministry Endowment Fund Update Donations for the Ministry Endowment Fund (MEF) have continued to arrive since the last update. As you probably know, an anonymous donor has offered to match $50,000 in gifts until May of 2016 to support Ministry Endowment. The amount contributed toward our challenge grant is now $13,445. Please consider making a donation to the MEF; your dollars will be doubled! We still have a ways to go toward the $50,000 challenge grant. Many thanks to our most recent donors: Jonathan and Mary Margaret Sprinkle Wm. and Cassandra Ridlinghafer Constance Turner Joe and Margaret Wilder
To make a donation or for more information, you may contact Sally Larsen at 577-6156 or Lois Britton, Parish Administrator at 299-6421, ext. 39.
Children's Christmas Project Update The Outreach Commission would like to thank all the generous parishioners who contributed to a successful Children's Christmas Project this year. We were able to send checks for $2000 to each of the three schools that St. Philip's supports -- Imago Dei, Rio Vista and Holaway -- to be used for emergencies and other special needs of the children there. Thank you.
Search Committee Update The Search Process for a new rector is rolling along on schedule. Keep apprised by attending the monthly First Sunday Vestry presentation at the 10:15 a.m. Adult Formation hour. The next one is March 6, in the Murphey Gallery.
Meanwhile, if you missed last week's presentation, you can still catch up quickly. For one thing, go to the back of the church and pick up a copy of our "Ministry Profile" -- it's St. Philip's ticket of entry into the world of computerized matchmaking in the Episcopal Church. It went "live" last week on the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) web site where it is visible to Episcopal clergy searching for a new position. Please note that our Profile is more than a "congregation seeking rector" want ad. Because rector candidates also complete the same profile questions as we did, the OTM computers will propose possible matches to the search committee of candidates whose individual profiles align well with our congregational profile. It's not the only way we receive names, but it gets the ball rolling with candidates we might not otherwise have known.
Click here to read more about the search process. The Search Committee welcomes your comments and suggestions: search@stphilipstucson.org.
