Special 11:15 a.m. Services Sundays during Lent
During Lent, the 11:15 a.m. service will follow the Rite I liturgy. This coming Sunday, February 14, we will begin the service with the Great Litany in procession. Please note that incense will be used at 11:15 a.m. services during Lent. "Comfy Space" Service
Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. there will be a "Comfy Space" service in the Children's Chapel. "Comfy Space" services seek to provide worship experiences, including Eucharist, for members of the Christian community who tend to "wiggle" in church, as well as those who worship with them. Sermon activities, music, lessons, and songs are designed to hold the interest of young persons while enabling parents and grandparents to enjoy the presence of God in a relaxed worship setting. The St. Cecilia and Cherub choirs will sing and Dr. Sandralyn Pierce will preach. Newcomer Orientation Series to Begin A series of four orientation sessions for those new to St. Philip's or those who would like to learn more begins Sunday, February 14, 10:15-11 a.m. in the Ferguson Room. Come learn about St. Philip's and get better acquainted with other newcomers and members of the parish community. The sessions are designed as an informal give and take to provide a snapshot of life at St. Philip's. Refreshments will be served. This first session will be to get acquainted. We will share stories of how we came to St. Philip's. An outline of the three remaining sessions will be presented. If time permits, we will tour the campus. The tour will help newcomers and others from the parish become better acquainted with the facilities and function of the parish. NAMI Mental Health Book Club
Relevant, informative, and interesting books on various topics related to mental illness are discussed on the second Sunday of each month at 4 p.m. in La Paz. This month, the selection is Saving Normal: An Insider's Revolt against Out-of-Control Psychiatric Diagnosis, DSM-5, Big Pharma, and the Medicalization of Ordinary Life by Allan Frances. All are welcome. Presented by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Holiday Closure
The Church, office, and campus will be closed on Monday, February 15, in observance of President's Day. Alarms will be activated. We will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Wednesdays during Lent For your spiritual journey during this Lenten season of prayer and reflection, St. Philip's offers a noontime Eucharist at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays during Lent. At 6 p.m., the J2A youth and their parents host Lenten Soup Suppers in the Murphey Gallery. Hearty, homemade soups (including a vegetarian option each week), bread, salad and dessert ($7 person/$20 family). Why cook when you can support the J2A pilgrimage, share a Lenten tradition, and enjoy fellowship over a delicious bowl of homemade soup at the same time? Contact Mary Paul with questions or for more information. At 6:45 p.m. in Room 10, the Rev. Canon Ted Holt invites you to explore sin, evil, and guilt as realities that have affected us all ever since the mythical days of Adam and Eve and that Slippery Serpent. Weaving Biblical, theological, and psychological ways of viewing the themes of sin, evil, and guilt, he will do so in a way that will likely be quite new to you, and along the way expand your understanding of how each functions (as well as malfunctions) in your life and the lives of those around you. The evening will conclude with a brief Devotion for the Close of Day. Thursdays during Lent: Noontime Lenten Recitals
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m., in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series showcases young high achievers in the Tucson area who will dazzle with their professional polish, maturity and technical prowess. Listen to the newest generation of musicians as they ascend to the professional stage - an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. On Thursday, February 18, Grace Sheppard, guitar, will present Guitar Masterpieces. On Thursday, February 25, our own Daniel Rosenberg, baritone, presents "The Life of the Wanderer." The series continues through March 17. Read more here. Suggested admission is $10. Youth Blog: apointofdeparture
We are excited to announce the launch of the new youth devotional blog, apointofdeparture, that first published last Thursday the 11th and will publish every Tuesday and Thursday. These short entries will look at the upcoming Sunday's lectionary readings, focusing on issues that can come up from the text, as a way to help keep our minds focused on our walks with Christ through Lent and beyond. This will also be one of several places for announcements and communication about youth events. Stuart Salvatierra, Director of Youth Ministries, invites everyone to check it out and join in discussion. The blog can be found here. Imago Dei 10th Anniversary Come celebrate the 10th anniversary of Imago Dei Middle School -- on Saturday, February 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., experience the debut of the Carriage House in Downtown Tucson and James Beard Award-Winning Chef Janos Wilder's menu with international flavors, reflecting the heritage of the student body. Special Event: Lenten Retreat Day
| Listen to this YouTube video of Rob Voyle describing his program. Obviously they are talking about an offering in Rhode Island, but the discussion of content applies to this retreat!
| Rob Voyle discusses Discovering Your Purpose |
Special Lenten Retreat Day: Discover Your PurposeHere is your opportunity to have your own personal "Day of Discovery," to look at your own future using the same Appreciative Inquiry process we used at the Parish Day of Discovery last fall. Learn how what you love to do is your spiritual fingerprint; do an Appreciative Inquiry into your own life and discover yourself at your best; discern, from you at your best doing what you love, your core God-given purpose for being. The Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle is a leader in the development and use of appreciative coaching. Rob will enhance your ability to delight in yourself, your neighbor, and God through his insightful, practical, loving, professionally grounded, appreciative, and often mischievous coaching and teaching skills. Saturday, February 27, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No charge; lunch included. To register, click here, or call the office at 299-6421, and give your name and information to the receptionist.
Please note: This retreat is different from the training being offered by the Rev. Dr. Voyle for clergy and other professionals on Friday, February 26. To register for that event, "Teach Them How to Forgive," click here. The church office is not involved in registrations for the Friday in-service training. |

Opportunity for Adult Acolytes
We are looking for adults who would be willing to lend us a hand as acolytes to supplement our youth acolyte program. Volunteers would need to be available to help fill out acolyte teams when needed. During a service, acolytes are an integral part of the worship service. Training will be provided. If you are interested in serving our church community by becoming an acolyte, please contact Arwen Newman or call 548-1699.
Altar Guild Welcomes You! St. Philip's Altar Guild would be pleased to welcome new members. We consider ourselves the liturgical partner of the priest, caring for the objects used in worship and the worship space. We are part of an unbroken tradition reaching back to the time when Jesus was alive. Service in the Altar Guild is an educational and spiritual exercise and richly rewarding in our sense of community and care for each other. All -- men or women, young or old -- may have a vocation for Altar Guild service. We have work days on Saturdays as well as weekdays. New members receive hands-on training and mentoring from experienced members. For more information, please contact Directress Pam Henderson.
Dante All-Night Reading Wants YOU Calling all Readers, Musicians, Hosts and Volunteers! The reading of Dante's Inferno on Maundy Thursday to Good Friday has become a well-known local and national event commemorating one of the great pieces of literature, but it has also become a rewarding and powerful spiritual event of peaceful contemplation and mysterious beauty. The survival and execution of this event takes organization, as well as effort, and the Dante Committee needs your help. This is the call to you for readers, musicians and hosts. Because Easter conspires against us and comes so early, we have set a deadline of February 29, but, of course, we would love to hear from you before that. The Committee encourages you to be involved in this wonderful event. Contact Angela Wakeham or Kevin Justus to express your interests, or for more information. We look forward to your contribution to this special event.
Laundry Love The Laundry Love ministry invites parishioners to volunteer and experience an opportunity to directly touch the lives of others. Laundry Love takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Members of our Come and See community have partnered with the national Laundry Love initiative to lead this ministry, which provides quarters, laundry soap, and dryer sheets to help wash the clothes of individuals and/or families living in poverty while offering compassion, conversation, and connections with community resources. The Laundry Love ministry welcomes you to join us. To volunteer, contact Patty. To make a financial donation, make your check payable to St. Philip's ("Laundry Love" on the memo line). "...whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
Interested in a Greener World? The Green Team's goal is to explore ways to care for Creation. This includes things we can do as individuals: for instance, water and energy conservation; composting; buying and eating local. It also includes continuing efforts to "green" our parish home: for example, finding additional energy efficiencies and using environmentally-friendly materials at coffee hours and potlucks. Finally, the Green Team's mission includes exploring ways we can become part of collective efforts on behalf of the environment as a faith-based community. In this regard, we've recently joined the Green Team at Pima County Interfaith Council. Are you interested in addressing environmental and conservation issues from a faith perspective? Help grow the Green Team's ministry! Contact Susan Erickson or call 608-287-8406.
Library Helpers Wanted St. Philip's Renouf/Nelson Library is seeking helpers to check books in and out, process new books into the collection, assist with inventory audits, etc. If you are creatively inclined, you can also help with displays! Schedule is flexible, and even a few hours a week would make an impact. Friendly and thorough training. If you are interested, or if you have questions, email us at library@stphilipstucson.org, or call/text Leigh Wood at 907-5242.
Consider a Matching Gift We have all been blessed by St. Philip's many ministries: our deeply spiritual liturgy amplified by inspiring hymns and anthems; sharing the "good news" through evangelism and outreach ministries; our diverse education ministries; and many more. The Ministry Endowment Team asks you to please consider contributing to the Ministry Endowment Fund. As you probably know, an anonymous donor has offered to match $50,000 in gifts until May of 2016 to support Ministry Endowment. To date, almost $12,000 has been donated, which means about $38,000 is still available to match donations. The Ministry Endowment team encourages you to make your gift today, when it will be matched and its impact doubled. You may contact Sally Larsen at 577-6156 or Lois Britton, Parish Administrator at 299-6421, ext. 39.

Search Committee Has Exhilarating and Exciting ChargeAs members of the search committee, we are often asked "how many candidates have you interviewed so far?" It seems like a good idea to review what has been happening here at St. Philip's and explain some of the tasks that have been absorbing us, which must be accomplished before the position is even posted.
The first task of our charge was twofold: to develop search criteria based on St. Philip's mission statement and on the congregation's goals and values, and to prepare our ministry portfolio. Read more.
