Epiphany is a season of great joy for all Christians as we celebrate the gift of God's Word made flesh. In the darkness of winter, we are illumined by the light of Christ in our lives. We seek to share this light as we do God's work in the world.
If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

First Sunday Music February 7
First Sunday Music for February 7, at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services, features the St. Philip's Singers, Canterbury Choir, and Canterbury Apprentices with string orchestra under the direction of Woosug Kang, in a liturgical performance of Arvo Pärt's haunting "Berliner Messe." This Mass, first premiered in 1990, uses an opening four-note phrase in the Kyrie, which serves as a binding motif for the work as a whole. Pärt's music is austere and powerful, yet in its apparent simplicity invites us to reflection, contemplation, and prayer as we journey toward the season of Lent. Because some of the music will be used as the prelude, worshippers should plan to arrive about 5 minutes early. First Sunday Food Drive Next Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line. Labyrinth NotesThe latest order of bricks has been received and installed in the Labyrinth. We anticipate donating $2,500 to support our talented St. Nicholas choir and Schola Cantorum, who have been invited to sing daily evensong at Worcester Cathedral, England, July 18-24. Members of the Labyrinth Committee will be in the Perry Garden on Sunday, February 7, to discuss any new commemorative brick orders you may be considering. Stop by and say "hello."
Jeffrey To Perform at Christ the King Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, St. Philip's Associate Music Director and Organist, will perform French Romantic organ works by Franck and Widor as part of Christ the King's 2015-2016 concert series on Sunday, February 7, at 4:30 p.m. The recital is preceded by Evening Prayer at 4 p.m., sung by the choir of Christ the King. Christ the King Episcopal Church is at 2800 W. Ina Road.

Lent Is Coming
|
For a schedule of Lenten services, concerts, classes, and other activities, click here. Blessed Palms Needed
Ash Wednesday is February 10. Please bring last year's blessed palms from Palm Sunday to be burned on Shrove Tuesday to provide ashes for Ash Wednesday. Please place them in the receptacle in the office. Ash Wednesday services will be held at 7:30 a.m. (Rite I), 12 noon (Rite II), 5:30 p.m. (All-Generations), and 7 p.m. (Rite II with choir).
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper The annual Shrove Tuesday supper is Tuesday, February 9, at 6 p.m. in the Murphey Gallery. Celebrate with a feast of pancakes, sausage, and fruit salad. The tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday comes from the need to use up such ingredients as sugar, fat, and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent ("Mardi Gras" is French for "fat Tuesday"). Don't miss this fun night of fellowship and yummy food prepared by the J2A youth and parents (proceeds go toward the J2A pilgrimage). $7 person/$20 family. At 7 p.m. we will transition from Epiphany to Lent with the Burning of the Palms in the Fishpond Garden. "Ashes To Go" -- A Transformative Experience You are invited on Ash Wednesday, February 10, to join the "Ash Mob" to be the hands and mouth of our Lord to bless folks in the community by dispensing ashes. By spending 1-2 hours that day you can be a gift while receiving immeasurable blessings. We will be at a variety of locations, including the Northwest YMCA (9-11 a.m.), Starbucks at Campbell & River (time tbd), the River Walk at Campbell & River (time tbd), Raging Sage Coffee House on Campbell (8-10 a.m.). Eucharistic Visitors will visit their communicants as desired. There are a few more opportunities pending. Training and ashes are provided. Please call Geri Smith at 744-3230, or Jean Rogers at 299-6421 X44 to join us for an unforgettable experience. Lenten Recitals Begin February 11
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents noontime recitals during Lent on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. beginning February 11, in the Bloom Music Center. Entitled "Rising Stars in the Next Musical Generation," the series showcases young high achievers in the Tucson area who will dazzle with their professional polish, maturity and technical prowess. Listen to the newest generation of musicians as they ascend to the professional stage -- an entertaining and relaxing way to spend your lunch hour. The series begins on Thursday, February 11, with Sound the Trumpet: Miranda Agnew, trumpet. On Thursday, February 18, Grace Sheppard, guitar, will present Guitar Masterpieces. The series continues through March 17. Dante All-Night Reading 2016 Calling all Readers, Musicians, Hosts and Volunteers! The reading of Dante's Inferno on Maundy Thursday to Good Friday has become a well-known local and national event commemorating one of the great pieces of literature, but it has also become a rewarding and powerful spiritual event of peaceful contemplation and mysterious beauty. The survival and execution of this event takes organization, as well as effort, and the Dante Committee needs your help. This is the call to you for readers, musicians and hosts. Because Easter conspires against us and comes so early, we have set a deadline of February 29, but, of course, we would love to hear from you before that. The Committee encourages you to be involved in this wonderful event. Contact Angela Wakeham or Kevin Justus at to express your interests, or for more information. We look forward to your contribution to this special event. |
Special Event: Lenten Retreat Day
|
Special Lenten Retreat Day: Discover Your PurposeHere is your opportunity to have your own personal "Day of Discovery," to look at your own future using the same Appreciative Inquiry process we used at the Parish Day of Discovery last fall. Learn how what you love to do is your spiritual fingerprint; do an Appreciative Inquiry into your own life and discover yourself at your best; discern, from you at your best doing what you love, your core God-given purpose for being. The Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle is a leader in the development and use of appreciative coaching. Rob will enhance your ability to delight in yourself, your neighbor, and God through his insightful, practical, loving, professionally grounded, appreciative, and often mischievous coaching and teaching skills. Saturday, February 27, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No charge; lunch included. To register, click here, or call the office at 299-6421, and give your name and information to the receptionist.
Please note: This retreat is different from the training being offered by the Rev. Dr. Voyle for clergy and other professionals on Friday, February 26. To register for that event, "Teach Them How to Forgive," click here. The church office is not involved in registrations for the Friday in-service training. |
