Special Announcement
|
I am pleased to announce that Stuart M. Salvatierra has accepted my invitation to join St. Philip's staff as Director of Youth Ministries. He will begin his ministry with on Sunday, January 17. You will have an opportunity to meet him at our Annual Meeting Part I at 10:15 that morning. I want to thank Jim Marr, Education Commissioner for Youth Ministries, the members of the Search Committee for their diligent work, and the many others who have kept these ministries flourishing during the interim period. I have asked Stuart to provide a bit of information about himself (see below). Please welcome Stuart to the community!
--The Rev. Canon Frank H. Clark, Interim Rector
Greetings From the Youth Ministry Desk!
My name is Stuart Salvatierra and am excited to say that I am the new Director of Youth Ministry here at St. Philip's! First I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you. I am over the moon excited about becoming a part of this community and have been floored at the exceedingly warm welcoming that I have been receiving from everyone.
Some background on me: I am originally from Tucson but have spent most of the last 10 years in the Midwest. I have my Bachelor of Arts from a small liberal arts college in Iowa called Cornell College. While there I studied Sociology, Anthropology, and Religious Studies. I am also done with all of my course work for my Master of Divinity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and expect to receive my diploma this spring. I also have a passion for working with children and youth with experience in a number of different contexts, most recently as the Minister of Youth and Christian Education for a Disciples of Christ Church in Lincolnshire, Illinois, and as the Director of an after-school program for a non-profit organization in Chicago.
Most important to me, though, is the reason that I am here at St. Philip's: to serve the youth of this community in their walks of faith. Ever since the call experience that I had when I was 17, I have wanted nothing more than to serve the Body of Christ. This event brought me to life, through God's Grace, in a way that I had previously not thought possible and came with an instilled knowing that the push of my life was to help God's people through the church. I cannot begin to express what a blessing it is for me to be able to work in this community to serve the call upon my heart.
I look forward to getting know everyone! Please do not be a stranger!
Many Blessings, Stuart Salvatierra

Richard Rohr Presentation January 16
All laity are encouraged to join Diocesan Canon Theologian, the Rev. Dr. Gil Stafford, for a presentation and conversation entitled, "Richard Rohr, Contemplative and Mystic." Rohr is a Franciscan monk and Roman Catholic priest who, at times, has been a controversial preacher, writer, and teacher. His theology is often considered progressive. Stafford will offer an overview of theological ideas focused on Rohr's three books, The Naked Now, Immortal Diamond, and What the Mystics Know. There will be time for questions and conversation following the presentation. Please join us this Saturday, January 16, from 10 a.m. to noon in the East Gallery.
Annual Meeting Part I January 17 The 2016 Annual Meeting of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish will be held on two Sundays: January 17 and 24. On January 17, the Annual Meeting Part I, at 10:15 a.m. in the Murphey Gallery, will include reports on mission and ministries, with opportunities for discussion and conversation. The Nominating Committee will also present a slate of candidates for Vestry, Junior Warden, and Delegates to Diocesan Convention (bios are available here). Nominations from the floor will be accepted at Part I of the Annual Meeting (January 17) only. In order to be nominated, the nominee must be a Pledger of Record for 12 consecutive months, communicant in good standing (attends worship and communion at least 3 times a year), and an active participant in ministries of the parish; must have previously agreed to serve, if elected; and must bring 150 copies of a one-sheet biography with picture. There will be no nominations from the floor during Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 24). At that time, elections will take place. Annual Meeting Part II will also feature Treasurer's, Buildings & Grounds, Preservation & Endowment Foundation, and Search Committee reports. The Constitution & Canons of the Episcopal Church provide that decisions are made by vote of the Vestry, who represent the parishioners who elect them. Therefore it is important to be informed about your representatives and to attend the annual meeting and vote.
Lectionary Readings for January 17 Old Testament: Isaiah 62: 1-5 Psalm 36: 5-10 New Testament: 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11 Gospel: John 2: 1-11
Solemn Choral Evensong January 17 Please join us beginning at 4 p.m. with a brief recital given by Dr. John T. Brobeck, Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Northminster Presbyterian Church. At 4:30, the Solemn Choral Evensong will feature the Schola Cantorum, who will sing the rarely heard Magnificat and Nunc dimittis for lower voices by Herbert Sumsion, and a setting by Barry Rose of the Christmas-Epiphany hymn "Come, thou, redeemer of the earth." Incense will be used. A reception will follow the service in the Gallery. Join us for this most beautiful liturgy to close the day.

Opportunities to Serve

Opportunity for Adult Acolytes
We are looking for adults who would be interested in lending us a hand as acolytes to supplement our youth acolyte program. Volunteers would need to be available to help fill out acolyte teams when needed. During a service, acolytes are an integral part of the worship service. Training will be provided. If you are interested in serving our church community by becoming an acolyte, please email Arwen Newman or call 548-1699. Library Helpers Wanted
St. Philip's Renouf/Nelson Library is seeking helpers to check books in and out, process new books into the collection, assist with inventory audits, etc. If you are creatively inclined, you can also help with displays! Schedule is flexible, and even a few hours a week would make an impact. We welcome snowbird assistants as well! Friendly and thorough training. If you are interested, or if you have questions, email us at library@stphilipstucson.org, or call/text Leigh Wood at 907-5242. Laundry Love The Laundry Love ministry invites parishioners to volunteer and experience an opportunity to directly touch the lives of others. Laundry Love takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Members of our Come and See community have partnered with the national Laundry Love initiative to lead this ministry, which provides quarters, laundry soap, and dryer sheets to help wash the clothes of individuals and/or families living in poverty while offering compassion, conversation, and connections with community resources. The Laundry Love ministry welcomes you to join us. To volunteer, contact Patty. To make a financial donation, make your check payable to St. Philip's ("Laundry Love" on the memo line). "...whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." You can read more about the Laundry Love ministry here. Consider a Matching Gift to Support Ministry
At St. Philip's, we have all been blessed by our many ministries: our deeply spiritual liturgy amplified by inspiring hymns and anthems; sharing the "good news" through evangelism and outreach ministries; our diverse education ministries; and many more. The Ministry Endowment Team asks you to please consider contributing to the Ministry Endowment Fund. As you probably know, an anonymous donor has offered to match $50,000 in gifts until May of 2016 to support Ministry Endowment. To date, almost $12,000 has been donated, which means about $38,000 is still available to match donations. The Ministry Endowment team encourages you to make your gift today, when it will be matched and its impact doubled. You may contact Sally Larsen at 577-6156 or Lois Britton, Parish Administrator at 299-6421, ext. 39. |
