Year-End Reminders

Consider a Matching Gift
If you are trying to improve your 2015 tax situation by making charitable contributions before year's end, this might be the perfect time to contribute to the Ministry Endowment Fund. As you probably know, an anonymous donor has offered to match $50,000 in gifts until May of 2016 to support Ministry Endowment. To date, $11,840 has been donated, which means more than $38,000 is still available to match donations.

On many levels, we have all been blessed by St. Philip's many ministries: our deeply spiritual liturgy amplified by inspiring hymns and anthems; sharing the "good news" through evangelism and outreach ministries; our diverse education ministries; and many more too numerous to mention. The Ministry Endowment team encourages you to make your gift today, when it will be matched and its impact doubled.

You may contact Sally Larsen at 577-6156 or Lois Britton, Parish Administrator at 299-6421, ext. 39.

Year-End Notice to Donors
Please wait until you've received your year-end statement of giving to file your income tax return. Some donors may not be able to deduct certain contributions if they file a tax return before receiving their church contribution receipt. For contributions to be deducted in 2015, they must be received at the church by December 31, 2015. This means that a check deposited in the church offering in January of 2016 cannot be deducted in 2015, even if it is backdated to 2015. One exception -- checks that are written, mailed and postmarked in 2015 are deductible in 2015 even though not received until 2016. Thank you.

Tax-Advantaged Giving Opportunity If You're Over 70
On December 18, President Obama signed into law a bill making the Charitable IRA Rollover provision permanent. You may be able to take advantage of this to reduce your 2015 taxes if you act this week.

Those 70 1/2 or older may transfer funds from your IRA (and your spouse's) directly to St. Philip's (up to $100,000). Making a gift directly from your IRA will avoid the income tax that would have been due had you taken the required minimum distribution.

The provision is retroactive to January 1, 2015. If you plan to take advantage for this tax year, we recommend contacting your IRA administrator right away to make St. Philip's the recipient of the distribution. The transaction must be completed by December 31, 2015. Then contact us so we can identify your gift (some retirement plan administrators do not denote the account holder on distribution checks). Also, please indicate how you'd like your gift to be used.

Thank you for including St. Philip's in your charitable giving.

Win! Win! Tax Credits
Take advantage of the State Tax Credit by contributing to a public and/or private school before December 31 (to donate to a private school you have till April 15, 2016). The Outreach Commission recommends Imago Dei Episcopal School and one or more of the public low-income schools listed in our flier (available in the office and Newcomer Information Station). This is a WIN-WIN situation as you get the full amount of your contribution back when you pay your Arizona state income tax. For more information see the yellow flier or call Peg Anderson, 575-8929.

Stock Gifts
If you are planning to give stock to the church, please use our new brokerage account to make the transfer and be sure to let Bonnie Flint, Finance Officer, know to expect the gift from you. Donor information is not always readily available to the church. (Charles Schwab; DTC Clearing #0164; Account #46006403;

This Weekend

Casa Maria sandwich ministry Casa Maria Outreach Program
Every four weeks on a Saturday, volunteers come together at St. Philip's to make sandwiches for the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen. We make 900 lunches, each with two sandwiches and a piece of fruit. We also send them soup makings for their soup vats, including chopped fresh vegetables, rice, potatoes, and canned vegetables. Our next date is Saturday, January 2. Please come join us at 7:30 a.m. in the East Gallery to help our neighbors in need.

First Sunday Music January 3
Special First Sunday Instrumental Music on Sunday, January 3, will be presented at the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services. Zephyrus Winds, a woodwind quintet, will provide music during the liturgy. The Zephyrus Winds have been playing together in various incarnations since 2011. Initially begun as a trio, the group flexes in size according to the vision of the performance and whims of the western wind, from which it draws its name, and has been known to adopt septet and even octet forms. Zephyrus Winds coalesces for January 3 in the form of a Wind Quintet, including Sandy Schwoebel on flute, Devin Gardner on oboe, Kevin Justus on clarinet, Gregory Helseth on horn, and Cassandra Bendickson on bassoon.

First Sunday Food Drive
Next Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, and St. Philip's Food Pantry ministry will be accepting donations of nonperishable food in unbreakable containers. Desired items are canned meat and meat entrees, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned beans, dried pasta and canned pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, and cereal. We also gratefully accept checks made out to St. Philip's with "Food Pantry" on the memo line.

Lectionary Readings for January 3

Psalm 84: 1-8
New Testament: Ephesians 1: 3-6, 15-19a

Amahl and the Night Visitors
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors with full orchestra and chorus! This one-act opera in English will delight those of all ages! One night in Judea, a disabled shepherd boy and his mother are visited by three strangers. They are the Three Kings, and they are on their way to Bethlehem to visit the Christ Child, who has just been born.

Annual Meeting Notice

The 2016 Annual Meeting of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish will be held on two Sundays: 17 and 24 January 2016. On both Sundays we will observe the usual service schedule. On January 17, the Annual Meeting Part I, at 10:15 a.m., will include reports on mission and ministries, with opportunities for discussion and conversation. On January 24, the Annual Meeting Part II, at 10:15 a.m., will focus on the fiduciary aspects of the parish, with opportunities for Q&A. Elections of three Vestry members for 3-year terms, the Junior Warden for a 1-year term, five lay delegates to the Annual Diocesan Convention, and three alternate delegates will take place at Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 24) only. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at Part I of the Annual Meeting (January 17). In order to be nominated, the nominee must be a Pledger of Record for 12 consecutive months, communicant in good standing (attends worship and communion at least 3 times a year), and an active participant in ministries of the parish; must have previously agreed to serve, if elected; and must bring 150 copies of a one-sheet biography with picture. There will be no nominations from the floor during Part II of the Annual Meeting (January 24).

The Constitution & Canons of the Episcopal Church provide that decisions are made by vote of the Vestry, who represent the parishioners who elect them. Therefore it is important to be informed about your representatives and to attend the annual meeting and vote.

Who May Vote
To vote, one must be a member in good standing of St. Philip's In The Hills Parish according to the following definitions from our Bylaws and the Canons:

Qualified members shall be all of the communicant members of the congregation as shown by the Church Register who are over 16 years of age, and all other members of the congregation over 16 years of age who have been regular contributors for the past six months, as shown by the treasurer's books.

Communicant members shall be those meeting the qualifications of the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. (From Bylaws, Article I, Section I.)

All communicants of this Church who for the previous year have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been faithful in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God, are to be considered communicants in good standing. (From Title I, Canon 17, and Sec. 3 of The Canons of the Episcopal Church.)

Meet the Vestry Nominees
There will be an opportunity to meet nominees on Sundays, January 3 and 10, at 10:15 a.m. in La Paz. Everyone is encouraged to attend -- bring your questions! Bios of the nominees are available here.

Hymn Festival Debuts at St. Philip's
On Sunday afternoon, November 15, an enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a Hymn Festival in the Church at St. Philip's. Attendees perused a list of 30 hymns, bought votes and marked their ballots, added write-in choices, or trumped the list by donating $100 for a favorite hymn to be sung. Participants sang joyfully as Woosug Kang and Jeffrey Campbell played special organ arrangements for the popular hymns selected by the audience. Often excited whoops were heard when the next winning hymn was announced by emcee Jim Marr. Many people expressed the wish that this would become an annual event. Read more.
