Advent Advent is often described as a season of waiting. Advent waiting is not passive, because this is a time of year pregnant with anticipation! Something new is about to be born in our midst. We invite you to explore the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's. May this season of waiting be a time of enrichment and inspiration for you.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Consider a Matching Gift

You recently received a brochure outlining endowment giving opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you are considering a gift to the Ministry Endowment Fund, allow us to share one more reason why now might be the perfect time to contribute.

An anonymous donor has offered to match $50,000 in gifts until May of 2016 to support Ministry Endowment. We are grateful for the $11,840 donated to date.

On many levels, we have all been blessed by our deeply spiritual liturgy amplified by inspiring hymns and anthems or to share the "good news" through evangelism and outreach ministries. St. Philip's gifts are diverse: Christian education through service to Sunday School, youth ministry, or adult formation. There are many more ministries too numerous to mention.

We encourage you to make your gift today, when it will be matched and its impact doubled.

With all best wishes for a wonderful holiday season,

Your Ministry Endowment team,
Sally Larsen, Chair
Jim Prescott-Smith, Secretary
Bob Couch
James Humphreys
Barbara Peck

You may contact Sally Larsen at 577-6156 or Lois Britton, Parish Administrator, at 299-6421.

Choral Evensong and Special Reception
Please join us for Solemn Choral Evensong on Sunday, December 20, at 4 p.m. The service will follow a short organ concert presented by Sara Tobe, Director of Music at First United Methodist Church, Tucson. Our youth in St. Nicholas Choir and Schola Cantorum, who will be traveling to the UK next summer to be the resident choir at Worcester Cathedral, will lead us through the rarely heard liturgy from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, with Canticle by Sir Hugh Blair and magnificent anthem, "Evening Hymn" by B. Gardiner. (Incense will be used at the service.)

Evensong

A special reception will follow the service. Please join us in fellowship and share in gratitude for the generous culture of philanthropic giving that exists at St. Philip's. There will be wine, soft drinks and food. Carols will be sung by members of our youth choirs.

Annual Children's Christmas Project
Collection for our annual Children's Christmas Project concludes today. This important ministry provides a Christmas gift of money to the three schools with which St. Philip's has a special relationship: Imago Dei Middle School, and Holaway and Rio Vista Elementary Schools. In Rio Vista and Holaway Schools, more the 90% of the children qualify for federally funded school lunch. Imago Dei, an Episcopal school which provides a quality and loving education entirely from donations, survives through acts of faith from many people and parishes like us. For all three schools, our gifts go, in many cases, to fulfilling the most basic human needs, and in others, making life and the future just a bit better for the children and their families.

Last year through this collection St. Philip's was able to give a gift of $2200 to each one of these schools. In her thank you letter to the church the principal of Rio Vista wrote "We have paid for eye exams and glasses, prescriptions, Fry's food cards, bus passes, extra underwear and clothes for the health office and rewards for good attendance with these funds. We always let the families know that it is the generosity of the people of St. Philip's Church that provides the funds to let us help them." Let us once again respond to this need by our generous Christmas giving. Look for the Children's Christmas Project tables in the Perry and Fishpond Gardens Sundays until Christmas to make your contribution. Checks should be made out to St. Philip's with Children's Christmas Project in the memo line. They may also be mailed to the church.

gift wrap J2A Poinsettia Sales and Gift-Wrapping Fundraiser
The J2A youth group is selling poinsettias to raise money for their pilgrimage! Stop by our table in the Fishpond Garden on Sunday, December 20, to buy or order your poinsettia. And thank you to parishioners who have already purchased a centerpiece or wreath!

J2A will be holding a bake sale and gift-wrapping fundraiser on Sunday, December 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Stop by our table in the Fishpond Garden to buy delicious, homemade baked goods! Bring gifts that need wrapping to either our table in the Fishpond Garden or to the Palo Verde Room. Your wrapped gifts can be picked up in the Palo Verde Room. (Repeats at the Greening on December 22.)

Little Shop Little Shop for Christmas Gifts
Don't forget the Little Shop for your Christmas gift giving needs. We are open 10 a.m.-noon Monday through Thursday and intermittently Sunday morning, depending on choir schedules. We will also be open during the Greening of the Church on Tuesday, December 22. Buy your gifts here and then get them wrapped by J2A. And remember that all net proceeds from the Little Shop go straight back to St. Philip's, and we do not charge sales tax.

Just Coffee for Gift Giving

Just coffee is for sale on Sunday, December 20, so that you can stock up for the holidays. Remember that sale of this coffee directly benefits the growers in Mexico. We have half-pound bags of ground regular and decaf ... these might be good Christmas gifts.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Services
St. Philip's offers five services on Christmas eve, at 3:30 (new time), 5:00 (new time), 7, 9, and 11 p.m. Each service (except the 3:30 p.m.) starts with special music 10 minutes before service time. There is also a Christmas Day Eucharist at 11 a.m. (congregational carol singing at 10:50). To read a full description of each service, click here.

In keeping with the teachings of the one whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas, St. Philip's extends a welcoming hand to everyone who seeks to worship with us. Therefore, we offer seating for the Christmas Eve and Christmas services on a first-arrived, first-seated basis. It is a good idea to plan to arrive early for the service of your choice. You may expect to wait in lines outside, so dress accordingly. If you wish to minimize your time spent waiting in line, you may consider attending the less crowded services on Christmas Eve -- at 5 or 11 p.m. -- or the Christmas Day service at 11 a.m. Please be sure your entire party is assembled before you enter the church, as saving seats is not permitted.

Although the parking lots are patrolled, it is a good idea not to leave valuables in your car.

For the 3:30 p.m. service on Christmas Eve, you are invited to bring your Baby Jesus from your home crèche (nativity set) to be blessed during the service. This service will feature our Cherub and St. Cecilia Choirs. A live Nativity scene will follow the service.

The 5, 7, 9, and 11 p.m. services on Christmas Eve and the 11 a.m. service on Christmas day begin with pre-service music and congregational carol singing, at 10 minutes before the listed service time.

The 11 p.m. service on Christmas Eve will include incense.

Please join all St. Philippians in sending a gracious and welcoming message to all who seek to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Cherub and St. Cecilia Choirs to Debut New Robes Christmas Eve
We are so excited for our growing Cherub Choir and new St. Cecilia Choir. We value the importance of the growth of these youngest parishioners in our church through music, and we are so thankful for their participation. We believe that leading worship and serving others through music is a strong core value of our music ministry. We wear our robes to represent ourselves as leaders, and it symbolizes the hard work we put into music and liturgy. We hope to let everyone know that Cherub Choir and St. Cecilia Choir are an integral part of our community. We purchased these robes to send a strong message that they are serving our community just like our youth and adult choirs. A big thanks to Laura Rubbo, Tori Holter, and others who helped in organizing the process and fitting and hemming these robes for our children.
