True Concord Lessons & Carols
True Concord Voices & Orchestra (formerly Tucson Chamber Artists) presents its popular Christmas Lessons and Carols concerts Saturday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 13, at 3 p.m., at St. Philip's. Works performed include those by Benjamin Britten, Stephen Paulus, and a world premiere by Gerald Near, and the audience joins on favorite carols. More information. True Concord's new CD "Far in the Heavens: Choral Music of Stephen Paulus" has recently received two Grammy nominations.
J2A Youth Breakfast Entertainment The J2A youth will provide entertainment during St. Philip's parish breakfast on Sunday, December 13, as a way of saying "thank you" to the parish for supporting their pilgrimage fundraisers. Come enjoy the best breakfast in town and hear our youth sing and play musical instruments. There may also be jokes and poems!
Special Visitor at "Comfy Space" Service He's coming! St. Nicholas of Myra will make an appearance during the "Comfy Space" service on Sunday, December 13, at 9:15 a.m. St. Nicholas famously said, "The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic God's giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves." "Comfy Space" services are worship and Eucharist for families and friends of God who are prone to wiggle in church. Worshippers of all ages are invited. Held on the second Sunday of each month.
Children & Family Advent Party The Children & Family Ministries Advent Party will take place on December 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Children's Chapel. There will be Texas Brisket & Links catered from Famous Dave's BBQ. The C&FM's new inflatable wide-screen will be set up in the courtyard (weather allowing), complete with popcorn, for the children to watch Phil Vischer's "Why Do We Call It Christmas?" A couple of St. Philip's elves will be on hand so parents can relax and enjoy conversation with other parents.
J2A Poinsettia Sales The J2A youth group are once again selling poinsettias this Advent season to raise money for their pilgrimage! Stop by our table in the Fishpond Garden on December 13 or 20 to buy or order your poinsettia. And thank you to parishioners who have already purchased a centerpiece or wreath!
Children's Christmas Project Collection for our annual Children's Christmas Project will continue until Christmas. This important ministry provides a Christmas gift of money to the three schools with which St. Philip's has a special relationship: Imago Dei Middle School, and Holaway and Rio Vista Elementary Schools. In Rio Vista and Holaway Schools, more the 90% of the children qualify for federally funded school lunch. Imago Dei, an Episcopal school which provides a quality and loving education entirely from donations, survives through acts of faith from many people and parishes like us. For all three schools, our gifts go, in many cases, to fulfilling the most basic human needs, and in others, making life and the future just a bit better for the children and their families.
Last year through this collection St. Philip's was able to give a gift of $2200 to each one of these schools. In her thank you letter to the church the principal of Rio Vista wrote "We have paid for eye exams and glasses, prescriptions, Fry's food cards, bus passes, extra underwear and clothes for the health office and rewards for good attendance with these funds. We always let the families know that it is the generosity of the people of St. Philip's Church that provides the funds to let us help them." Let us once again respond to this need by our generous Christmas giving. Look for the Children's Christmas Project tables in the Perry and Fishpond Gardens Sundays until Christmas to make your contribution. Checks should be made out to St. Philip's with Children's Christmas Project in the memo line. They may also be mailed to the church.
A Haven for the Holidays Feeling a little blue, lonely, or depressed? The Mental Illness Ministry cordially invites you to the Bride's Room (west of the Perry Garden) for good coffee, conversation, and companionship, at 10:15 a.m. each Sunday during December. All are welcome - those who have a brain disorder, families, friends, and anyone who may have the holiday "blues." For more information, please contact the Rev. Anne Strong (275-7582), Cheryl Mason (318-1511), or Dr. Sharon Nielsen (579-8229).

Tuesdays with the Bible The "Tuesdays with the Bible" conversation group's Advent series continues in La Paz at 10:45 a.m. We are discussing the impact of music on our worship and understanding of our faith traditions. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's book Songs My Grandma Sang and A Song to Sing, A Life to Live by Don and Emily Saliers will be used as study guides. Each session will be led by a member of the group and will begin with a reading of a Psalm and prayer. PB Curry's book is available in The Little Shop. If you have questions, email Richard Kuns or call 615-9527. After-School Music Program Winter Recital
The After-School Music and Homework Program will present their semester-end concert on Tuesday, December 15, at 5 p.m. in the Church. Participants will perform on piano and chimes and their choir will sing. All are invited. A family supper follows the concert in the East Gallery.
J2A Gift Wrapping and Bake Sale Help support the youth as they raise money for their pilgrimage and remove two items from your holiday to-do list! The J2A youth will be holding a bake sale and gift-wrapping fundraiser on Sunday, December 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Stop by our table in the Fishpond Garden to buy delicious, homemade baked goods! Bring gifts that need wrapping to either our table in the Fishpond Garden or to the Palo Verde Room. Your wrapped gifts can be picked up in the Palo Verde Room. The J2A Youth will also be hosting a gift-wrapping fundraiser along with a bake sale on Tuesday, December 22, during the Greening of the Church, 5-7 p.m. Look for us in the Murphey Gallery! Just Coffee for Gift Giving Just coffee will be sold on December 20 so that you can stock up for the holidays. Remember that sale of this coffee directly benefits the growers in Mexico. We have half-pound bags of ground regular and decaf ... these might be good Christmas gifts. Evensong and Special Reception
On Sunday, December 20, at 4 p.m., the St. Nicholas Choir and Schola Cantorum will lead Solemn Choral Evensong. The service is preceded by a short organ concert, presented by Sara Tobe, Director of Music at First United Methodist Church, Tucson. The choirs will lead us through the rarely heard liturgy from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer with Canticle by Sir Hugh Blair and magnificent anthem, "Evening Hymn" by B. Gardiner. Our youth in these choirs will be traveling to the UK next summer to be the resident choir at Worcester Cathedral. A special reception will follow the service. Please join us in fellowship and share in gratitude for the generous culture of philanthropic giving that exists at St. Philip's and, specifically, for the establishment of the Kautz Family Music Ministry Endowment Fund. There will be wine, soft drinks and food. Carols will be sung by members of our youth choirs.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Services
|
St. Philip's offers five services on Christmas eve, at 3:30 (new time), 5:00 (new time), 7, 9, and 11 p.m. Each service (except the 3:30 p.m.) starts with special music 10 minutes before service time. There is also a Christmas Day Eucharist at 11 a.m. (congregational carol singing at 10:50). To read a full description of each service, click here. In keeping with the teachings of the one whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas, St. Philip's extends a welcoming hand to everyone who seeks to worship with us. Therefore, we offer seating for the Christmas Eve and Christmas services on a first-arrived, first-seated basis. It is a good idea to plan to arrive early for the service of your choice. You may expect to wait in lines outside, so dress accordingly. If you wish to minimize your time spent waiting in line, you may consider attending the less crowded services on Christmas Eve -- at 5 or 11 p.m. -- or the Christmas Day service at 11 a.m. Please be sure your entire party is assembled before you enter the church, as saving seats is not permitted. Although the parking lots are patrolled, it is a good idea not to leave valuables in your car. For the 3:30 p.m. service on Christmas Eve, you are invited to bring your Baby Jesus from your home crèche (nativity set) to be blessed during the service. This service will feature our Cherub and St. Cecilia Choirs. A live Nativity scene will follow the service. The 5, 7, 9, and 11 p.m. services on Christmas Eve and the 11 a.m. service on Christmas day begin with pre-service music and congregational carol singing, at 10 minutes before the listed service time. The 11 p.m. service on Christmas Eve will include incense. Please join all St. Philippians in sending a gracious and welcoming message to all who seek to celebrate the birth of Jesus. |

Thanksgiving 2015 at St. Philip's
November 26 is a predictably beautiful day at St. Philip's, as we gather to give thanks. Warming sun, clear blue skies, and our gorgeous church, with its rich traditions and beautiful grounds, greet us. At noon, after the Thanksgiving Eucharist, the walk from the Church to the Murphey Gallery seems especially green and bright. We at St. Philip's are truly grateful for many things this Thanksgiving, particularly the health and safety of our loved ones and for our church community.Read more.
