Hymn Festival Benefit Sunday Afternoon

What's your favorite hymn? Come enjoy a fun afternoon with your friends on Sunday, November 15 at 2 p.m. Jim Marr will emcee this festival of favorite hymns, chosen by you. Schola Cantorum and St. Nicholas youth will sing anthems, Woosug Kang and Jeffrey Campbell will play organ accompaniment and solos, and you will join in four part harmony often embellished with special descants. Pick up the list of 30 hymns and buy voting points to choose your favorites at the St. Nicholas Youth/UK Residency table in the Perry Garden (tickets and voting sheets will also be available at the door). Have you always wanted to write new words to your favorite hymn tune? Choose any hymn in the 1982 Hymnal and create a new verse. Find more information at the UK Residency table. An Ice Cream Social in the Gallery will conclude the joyful event. Tickets are $20/person -- on sale at coffee hour or at the door.

The Hymn Festival is a benefit for the July 2016 UK Residency at Worcester Cathedral in England. Your donation supports sending 23 St. Nicholas youth to sing daily Evensong and Sunday Eucharist services for a week. The invitation to serve as the Choir in Residence at the cathedral is a huge honor and privilege and reflects the high level of St. Philip's youth-oriented music programs. The residency will be a strong sign of sharing our gifts on a global level, and is an amazing growth opportunity. The residency not only will instill in the youth strong leadership skills and a profound sense of accomplishment, but also will provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In this forum, Kathe Padilla, founder of ZCF, will talk about her work with children orphaned by AIDS. ZCF is currently raising 90 children and educating 150. With great courage, these women, men and children are re-examining what it means to be human and how we live on this planet. Their stories of combating global warming and the devastation of mountaintop removal, of promoting food security, environmental justice, recycling, land preservation, and of teaching love and respect for life on earth are the heart of this documentary.

Just Coffee Just Coffee for Gift Giving
Just coffee will be sold on extra Sundays in November and December so that you can stock up for the holidays. Remember that sale of this coffee directly benefits the growers in Mexico. We are selling on November 15, and also December 6 and 20. We have half-pound bags of ground regular and decaf ... these might be good Christmas gifts.

Children's Christmas Project
Collection for our annual Children's Christmas Project will begin Sunday, November 15, and continue for 6 Sundays until Christmas. This important ministry provides a Christmas gift of money to the three schools with which St. Philip's has a special relationship, Imago Dei, Holaway, and Rio Vista. Last year through this collection St. Philip's was able to give a gift of $2200 to each one of these schools. In her thank you letter to the church the principal of Rio Vista wrote "We have paid for eye exams and glasses, prescriptions, Fry's food cards, bus passes, extra underwear and clothes for the health office and rewards for good attendance with these funds. We always let the families know that it is the generosity of the people of St. Philip's Church that provides the funds to let us help them." Let us once again respond to this need by our generous Christmas giving. Look for the Children's Christmas Project tables in the Perry and Fishpond Gardens Sundays until Christmas to make your contribution. Checks should be made out to St. Philip's with Children's Christmas Project in the memo line. They may also be mailed to the church.

Healthy Snacks (fruit, cheese, whole grain breads, low calorie muffins, gluten or peanut free snacks, etc.); 3. "Kid Friendly Snacks." The Life and Times of Martha Laurens Ramsay, 1759-1811, Joanna Bowen Gillespie, Ph.D., 2001, University of South Carolina Press

St. Philip's very own Jo Gillespie has written an eloquent and elegant biography about an 18th-century southern woman, actually in many ways a heroine, set in Charleston, South Carolina during and after the Revolutionary War. Dr. Gillespie's contribution is not only a fascinating story of a highly placed southern woman, Martha Laurens Ramsay, but also an important social history of that section of the country during turbulent times. Henry Ossian Flipper: West Point's First Black Graduate, Jane Eppinga, Republic of Texas Press, 1996 and 2015

St. Philip's very own Jane Eppinga has written a fascinating biography of Henry Ossian Flipper, West Point's first black graduate. The grandson of slaves, Flipper was not the only black student at West Point in 1867, but he was the first graduate, who, as Eppinga correctly claims, "would assault the color barrier and march into the annals of history."
