Fuentes Rojas / Bordado por la Paz
embroidered handkerchief Violence related to the US-Mexican Drug War has caused the deaths of more than 150,000 people in Mexico. Many were innocent bystanders of random or targeted violence. Some were friends or relatives of people in drug cartels. All were children of God, worthy to be mourned and remembered. Members of Fuentes Rojas / Bordado por la Paz meet to embroider, in red thread on a man's white handkerchief, details of the victim's death based on police records. We enjoy conversation and fellowship as we stitch. The completed panuelos are mailed to Fuentes Rojas organizers in Mexico City to be used in public actions. You are invited into a movement of remembrance and solidarity with our neighbors who struggle each day to survive the US-Mexico Drug War in their neighborhoods, villages, towns and cities. Join us for our taller de octubre on Thursday, October 22, at 10 a.m. at El Rio Senior Center, 1390 W. Speedway Blvd. Embroidery instruction is available at the taller.  For more information, a list of inexpensive and easily available supplies and to RSVP, contact Suzanne.

Bring Items to Help Celebrate Dia de los Muertos
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated in Latin American countries, particularly Mexico. It is a time to remember and honor the deceased. During this celebration it is a tradition to set up an ofrenda, a shrine or altar constructed to present offerings to the spirits, who, it is believed, visit their earthly homes during this time. Since Day of the Dead is considered to be a celebration of eternal life rather than a sad event, ofrendas and Dia de los Muertos art usually reflect whimsical portrayals of the dead in activities they engaged in when alive. St. Philip's invites you to remember your departed loved ones by contributing to an ofrenda, which is set up in the Columbarium Garden until November 3. Photographs, meaningful objects and memorabilia, and (pre-approved) candles are all suitable offerings. Bring your offerings to Stella during office hours, or they may be left in her mailbox (with a note indicating "For Ofrenda" if not obvious) or on the shelves by the receptionist's desk on Sunday.

A special All Souls Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 2, and will end at the ofrenda. The service is followed by a festive reception hosted by the Parish Life Ministry.

Book Sale volunteers Donations Sought for Renouf/Nelson Library Book Sale
The ever-popular Renouf/Nelson Library's Used Book Sale is right around the corner (November 7 and 8). The Library Committee gratefully accepts donations of used books to sell at the Sale, up until November 5. All profits go towards the purchase of materials for the Library. Please bring your book donations directly to the Library. Thank you!

Important Event

Time to Register for Day of Discovery October 31
Please plan to attend the Day of Discovery on Saturday, October 31, the first event in our rector search process. We will gather to discover a desired future for St. Philip's.

The Day of Discovery will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m. Lunch is included. Concurrently, children will participate in a plethora of exciting activities during the All Saints Celebration in the Children's Center. Nursery care will also be provided.

Why do you need to register? you might ask. In a word: lunch. We need to know who is coming so we can have appropriate numbers of materials and lunches.

This is an extremely important first step in our search for a new rector. It is vital for as many St. Philippians as possible to be involved, so please make a note of the date and register soon. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. The objectives for the day are 1) to discover our parish community's strengths and 2) to express how these strengths align with the core values of our parish community. In this way, we will discover how God has gifted us to minister in the wider community. During this process we will also discover our dreams for the future of St. Philip's In The Hills. The Day of Discovery is the primary opportunity for members and friends of St. Philip's to provide input into the search process.

Sign up by clicking here or by calling the church office at 299-6421.
