Ministry E-Letters

Join Our Mailing List!

For 6 months of the liturgical year we retrace the story of Jesus--from anticipating his arrival to celebrating his birth and ministry to making sense of his death, resurrection, and ascension. During the season after Pentecost, we ponder the question: If Jesus is the Christ, then who are we? We invite you to seek answers through the many spiritual, educational, musical, and ministry opportunities at St. Philip's.

If you know of someone who might like to receive these e-updates, feel free to use the "forward to a friend" link to share the newsletter with them! That doesn't add them to any lists but gives them the opportunity to choose to subscribe.

We hope this e-letter is a useful tool in connecting and staying connected with our St. Philip's community!

Guest Preacher Sunday; Retreat Saturday
Vivian Taylor At the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, October 11, Vivian Taylor will be our guest preacher. She is a fierce advocate for trans, gay, and queer rights in the Episcopal Church. She is a writer, activist, avid Sung Compline promoter, and proud (if occasionally troubled) North Carolinian currently living in Boston. She is the former Executive Director for Integrity USA. She served in the War in Iraq during 2009-2010 and is currently running several statewide LGBTQ rights campaigns in places such Ohio and Oregon. She writes about her experiences in war, being a "peacenik" veteran and being a transgender, bisexual Christian. We welcome her to St. Philip's.

Vivian is also facilitating a retreat on Saturday, October 10, sponsored by St. Philip's LBGTQ+A Ministry, entitled Queer Christianity 101. The cost of the retreat is $25 and is payable on the day of the retreat. Lunch is included. For information contact Cameron Rau at cameron.rau@comcast.net or 440-2240.

ofrenda Bring Items to Help Celebrate Dia de los Muertos
El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated in Latin American countries, particularly Mexico. It is a time to remember and honor the deceased. During this celebration it is a tradition to set up an ofrenda, a shrine or altar constructed to present offerings to the spirits, who, it is believed, visit their earthly homes during this time. Since Day of the Dead is considered to be a celebration of eternal life rather than a sad event, ofrendas and Dia de los Muertos art usually reflect whimsical portrayals of the dead in activities they engaged in when alive. Starting on October 13, St. Philip's invites you to remember your departed loved ones by contributing to an ofrenda, which will be set up in the Columbarium Garden until November 3. Photographs, meaningful objects and memorabilia, and (pre-approved) candles are all suitable offerings. A special All Souls Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 2, and will end at the ofrenda. Bring your offerings to Stella during office hours, or they may be left in her mailbox (with a note indicating "For Ofrenda" if not obvious) or on the shelves by the receptionist's desk on Sunday.

El Tiradito Community Vigil Thursday

El Tiradito Shrine is on Main St. between Simpson and Cushing Sts., south of the Tucson Community Center South Parking Lot. The vigil is sponsored by Derechos Humanos. This is an early evening of music, fellowship, prayer, and reflection. For more info and to RSVP, contact Suzanne.

Time to Register for Day of Discovery October 31
Please plan to attend the Day of Discovery on Saturday, October 31, the first event in our rector search process. We will gather to discover a desired future for St. Philip's.

The Day of Discovery will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m. Lunch is included. Concurrently, children will participate in a plethora of exciting activities during the All Saints Celebration in the Children's Center. Nursery care will also be provided.

Why do you need to register? you might ask. In a word: lunch. We need to know who is coming so we can have appropriate numbers of materials and lunches.

This is an extremely important first step in our search for a new rector. It is vital for as many St. Philippians as possible to be involved, so please make a note of the date and register soon. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. The objectives for the day are 1) to discover our parish community's strengths and 2) to express how these strengths align with the core values of our parish community. In this way, we will discover how God has gifted us to minister in the wider community. During this process we will also discover our dreams for the future of St. Philip's In The Hills. The Day of Discovery is the primary opportunity for members and friends of St. Philip's to provide input into the search process.

Sign up by clicking here or by calling the church office at 299-6421.
